All good questions. Here are the answers.Money on facilities and poor results? Well, when people at the University believe building buildings is the only thing you need to be successful, you get disappointed in the results. Building things is not enough. I just hope the new AD doesn't whore out the football program like Miami's AD does to support the remainder of the athletic department. If that happens, we will have one 4-8 or 3-9 season after another.Wasted investment in football? Not really. They needed a new stadium anyhow.White elephant? Yes and no. I don't think MAC sports will ever pay for themselves. All the school will do is get the money from the state to support the stadium. The school needs to stop building high end arena for sports NOW. One more for soccer and that is enough until they prove they can support them.My big question is this. Is the University REALLY willing to get a little dirty to win football games? Another question would be....What are the fans willing to do to win? Are the fans willing to get a little dirty as well?money talks and bullsh*t walks. this athletic program is headed on a rocket sled for financial disaster. look for dirt all over the place very soon.I hope you are wrong, but you may very well be right. The University is full of public employees. It's obvious from our nation's current financial state our public employees have no understanding of financial responsibility. Why would UofA be any different? They need to stop building now until they have a clear plan for how they are going to pay for it.

Football is a dynamic, ever-changing game where offensive and defensive adjustments must be made throughout the game. Nicely and the rest of the Zips offense looked OK until the Temple defense adjusted and shut them down. The Zips offense never adjusted to the adjusted Temple defense. The Temple secondary began covering the Zips receivers very tightly. Nicely looked from receiver to receiver to receiver and found none open. By that time the rush was on him and he was forced to throw out of bounds, which is smart and not a freshman mistake. Forcing the ball in to well-covered receivers would have been a freshman mistake. The Zips team was overwhelmed by a much better team. Nicely cannot be expected to do it by himself.I agree that he can't do it by himself, but it all starts with him. He has the ball in his hands every play. What he can do is not throw the ball directly to the other team's player. What he can do is throw the ball in bounds so our guy has at least a chance to catch it.Let's not make too many excuses for poor performance because the kid is a freshman. He has a full scholarship to a college and if he gets in the game he needs to earn that scholarship. He will be good, but Friday he left a lot to be desired.
-
I agree and disagree. Nicely did look like a freshman in that his accuracy is was poor last night. How many times did he throw the ball out of bounds? No catch can be made on a ball out of bounds. He threw the ball directly to one of their players....that isn't intelligent and he learned better in JR High. He was terrible after the first drive.Nicely needs to play better and I'll leave it at that.

I can explain this one. With only three dlinemen, the offense can double team at the point of attack knocking our dline back into the lbs. Think of the dline as the offensive line for the linebackers. They get in the way so the lbs can make most of the plays on running downs. If the oline is pushed back into the backfield, the rb can't run because the line is at his feet. If the dline is pushed back, they get in the feet of the lbs and the lbs look slow.DBs are designed to cover foremost and tackle second. We put too many on the field and hope they can tackle. DBs are little and they struggle to tackle medium sized players such as running backs. Over the course of a game and year, they get worn down and it becomes difficult for them to either tackle or cover.A new defensive scheme will improve this team.

Yes. Until the University shows a commitment to winning (not building new buildings, but winning), you are wasting your time and money. I was planning on going to the EMU game the day after Thanksgiving because I will be visiting family in Ohio. There is no way that I will waste five hours of my weekend with my family to go watch that junk.Fair weather fans are the best type of fans because they demand winning and will not support losing. I used to go to every game even when they were bad and looking back, it was a complete waste of time. If you want to support the school financially, GOOD, send a check and go do something more productive with your time until the University decides it wants to AND takes the steps to having a winning program. Winning takes more than just building stadiums and practice facilities and it takes a Hell of a lot more than just saying you want to win.

Welcome to the club. I don't know how we can play so many DBs and give up so many big plays down field.Size matters. Oue DL isn't that small, they just look small because there are so few of them on the field. I think we looked small compared to Temple because Temple has accumulated, in a very short time, the best talent in the league. We didn' look smaller than any other MAC team we played this season.
-
Lee, I don't want to sound like I'm picking on you, but you're just wrong about the talent on the team. Akron does have the talent, but the coaching is not there. They need bigger size on the field. Too many DBs on the field and not enough medium and large sized players.Everyone should be hesitant to look at last night's game as an indication of our talent. I said this during last year's recruiting season when Temple was stocking up talent, they are about to become the next Marshall in the MAC but they will get to Marshall's level a different way. I didn't think they would get this good this fast though. They at least looked to have UCONN type talent on the field. Akron has MAC talent on the field....you can win in the MAC with MAC talent. They have a huge population to draw from so they can get a better pick of players. They actually can get Big East type players to come to school there (Philadelphia is next to New Jersey and NJ produces a lot of very good college football players...not to mention Pennsylvania does as well). For all of you facilities lovers, they play in an NFL stadium. Their school is in an urban setting and they can more easily draw the type of player necessary to win in this horrible conference. Temple is one of only three D-1A football teams in PA so they don't water down their in state talent like Ohio does with seven D-1A teams. Temple wants to win and they are showing they can throw their weight around. Temple will win the MAC this year and be the best team in the MAC for at least the next four years....take it to the bank. Temple wants to win....most of the MAC "BUILDS" and wishes they could win.NIU was the third game on the road in a row. That's exhausting for a team and if they looked slow during that game, it should be expected.

"Stupid is as stupid does." And boy, does we! Started off the second half by having to punt after little movement, and another spectacular punt of 34 yards. It's more than that. Personal fouls, horrible ints, etc. Most would blame this on JD, but the players need to pull their heads out of their butts. This has been going on for long before JD got here. #11 learned in jr high school football not to throw a guy down out of bounds. Nicely learned in jr high school not to throw the ball directly to a player from the other team....the list could go on. Adjustments? Temple lines up multiple times in the second half with an unbalanced line and double slot backs to the unbalanced side. We don't move the line in that direction and they get TDs out of it. We are just an amazingly stupid team.
-
Two things:1. Temple is a Big East team playing in the MAC. Welcome back to the Marshall years when they were in the MAC.2. We are the most stupid team in the country. Can a new coach coach stupid out of the players.

Wow, beating Navy is the sign of greatness? Here is their 2009 schedule and results. Navy hasn't beaten anybody good! Notre Dame is horrible and wouldn't come in third in a second tier conference like the Big 10. So your advice seems to be to allow Temple to get their yards on the ground (losing strategey) while keeping them from getting yards on the ground by having the front read their keys (winning strategy)....brilliant.Ladies and gentlemen, the Great GP1 is about to split the atom on this web board. Are you ready? A football game is won by running a balanced offense (near equal number of runs and passes) and forcing the other team to run an unbalanced by preventing their running game from doing anything. Get a big lead early with big plays (throw down field JD), run the ball late to kill the clock and force them to throw. How about mixing some man-to-man with zone when rushing only 3? If we are going to run blitz on first and second down, blitz from the outside and not up the middle....I think Wagner and our DLine could fight it out in the middle if they did a better job of forcing the action into the middle.....Our DBs do not tackle well enough to have the action forced out to them. One more DLineman would help to support the middle if they blitzed from the outside.Pass on first down and run on second down. Run straight at them like the Steelers did to the fraud that is the Denver Broncos Monday. >Let us pause briefly for a Great GP1 prediction.....The NFL has figured out Denver and IF Denver makes the playoffs, they will be the last team in. Cincinnati could win the AFC North and the Steelers would get a Wild Card (they now have a tie-breaker over Denver with the win Monday). Lots of other teams could buck the Broncos right out of the playoffs.<Enough predictions....................... An old rule in football is blitz early and cover late. If they have the lead and are getting pressure on the QB with their base defense, then they can win with this strategy. The only real unknown is if the Zips can actually play tight man-to-man defense. We never see them play tight man-to-man so we don't know how they will do at it. Our secondary is more concerned with not giving up big plays than making a play.If they have the lead late, run, run and run some more. Don't listen to the idiots who say that is playing not to lose.....I've watched the Steelers do it for 40 years and it seems to work for them. Teams that "play not to lose" always seem to end up losing. It isn't exciting and makes everyone nervous, but it works.

If you are a boob like those above, I'll take two.You know what they say about boobs....If you've seen one boob, you want to see them all.I hate this prediction, but here it goes.Temple 35Akron 17

The MAC Championship Game was the best coached game in the D-1A era. Huge come from behind win. Defense adjusted to what NIU was doing and held them to field goals instead of TDs. Zips score seven instead of six and win by one. Many of the games the Zips won under Brookhart had decent coaching. The problem is there are too few of the well coached games and too many of the poorly coached games. With good coaching, the team can do much better next year. After suffering through MAC games this week on TV, I am convinced we can beat any team that has been on TV with the exception of CMU. The players proved to me last week they have talent and can execute a game plan even when they are not put in the best position to win. I was very proud of the players last week and I remain very bullish about the near future of this team.

Nobody ever said you had to be smart to be a MAC school. Write back in a few years and let's see if the game ever happens.

I'm pround to say I have no family members who went to Can't State. I would fart in the general direction of any family member who went to Can't State.BTW, the story is true.

I was thinking Animal House myself. However, I was thinking of the scene where they are in the school trial to have their fraternity thrown off campus and the speech where the students leave humming God Bless America.

You should also have an aversion to scam artists. The Amish are running one of the biggest rackets in the country. They should be investigated and jailed.....all of them!Scam artists are bad, and I'd be happy if every single one of them was caught and punished to the full extent of the law. But bigots are worse, because bigots indict many innocent people along with the few who might be guilty. Since the USA was founded on the fundamental judicial principle of innocent until proven guilty, by definition all bigots are inherently un-American.Everyone is bigoted against something St. Dave in Green. Are you saying we are all un-American? If you are bigoted against bigots, aren't you un-American? Are there any actual citizens living in the USA?Actually, the USA was founded on the rule of law which says a lot of things. One of those things our laws say is we are innocent until proven guilty. That doesn't make people innocent because they were not proven guilty or because they have not been to court. Everyone knows the Army Major who killed 13 people last week is guilty. There has been no court case, but we all know he did it. Does that make us un-American?The Emperor of Japan was never tried in any international court after WWII (part of the peace treaty), but is there any doubt he was guilty of crimes? Am I un-American for believing that? Not every German went to court after WWII, but can we at least say there was something strange about their culture that allowed what went on before and during WWII? Can't we say that there is something strange (disturbed) about Amish culture that allows them to live the way they do, have young girls show up at hospitals after being raped by elders (nobody says a word) or sell furniture as made by them when in fact it was made in NC. The problem is more deep than just strange religious views. I actually find their closed society very sneaky.I believe that Can't State sucks. While it has never been proved in a court of law (although I don't think it would be hard to prove), it doesn't make it any less true. Am I and the many on this board who believe that un-American?Do we really need a judge, courtroom, jury and lawyers to tell us when things are true or not true? Must everything to to court?God bless American and God bless people who can see right from wrong without a lawyer telling them the difference.

Interesting read on the internet about Tim Donaghy's new book called Blowing The Whistle. If only half of this is true, it is pretty bad.Let's make this a MAC topic since this is a Zips board. MAC refs leave a lot to be disired. Are they purposefully bad as NBA refs are at times or are they just plain bad? What do you think about the excerpts from the book?

You should also have an aversion to scam artists. The Amish are running one of the biggest rackets in the country. They should be investigated and jailed.....all of them!I'm from amish country and I can tell you that you don't know the first thing you are talking about. wanna know real Amish? go work on a farm. thats where you will find most of them. out in the field working and busting their back so you can sit here and talk trash on something you know nothing about. In all seriousness, I have a friend who is an OBGYN. She grew up in that area and did some summer work in the hospitals around Amish country. Young Amish girls (and by young I mean high school age...some JR high school) are routinely brought to the hospital because they were sexually assaulted by the elders (yes, elders, not elder) in the church. They all keep their mouths shut though....just like the mafia. But I guess my friend doesn't know what she is talking about....must just be some crazy woman who studied hard, went to college, graduated with a very high GPA, went to medical school and now is a doctor.

Doesn't make sense? Let me help. You got bitch-slapped.It's funny. We have spent years making fun of Can't grads for holding low level jobs. When the Great GP1 actually sees one working a job like we have made fun of for years, breaks the guys balls to his face during the Akron vs Can't game and now we aren"t supposed to make fun of Can't fans for being losers?I'm sorry, but Can't sucks and they deserve all the crap we can throw at them.
-
Maybe, but I'm sure you did and were more than willing to swallow.

Again, what would it prove to fire JD right now? That college football IS bloodsport like it should be! And it would make the fans calling for his hide FEEL GOOD! That's what, and considering it's those fans that pay to keep the lights on, it wouldn't be such a bad symbolic move, IMO.Should we consult that fat slob Big Dawg next to see who we should hire next so the fans will feel better? There must be too many Browns fans on this board if we are going to start firing coaches to make the fans feel better.

Again, what would it prove to fire JD right now?

DR. LOU!!!Lou looks like he is groping the breasts of a large eastern European woman.

Why would I? All the Can't grads have all the jobs.
