ZachTheZip
Analysis, jubilation, and random thoughts can go here.First off, I'm glad we won. We need a strong showing in the non-conference schedule because the MAC is apparently much tougher than last year. Our offense is now our strength. if there was anything I could find wrong about it, it would be the O-line not opening holes.Defense, well, lets just say that we're lucky that Ball State doesn't run the ball too much.http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/27957159.htmlStory link. skip-zip
I see I am one of the first post-game posters. Not surprising knowing that all of the younger folks are still back at the Ohio Brewing Co. celebrating. Here's a couple of thoughts I had today.1) Beating a BCS conference team is great, no matter who they are. This win should give us a lot of confidence.2) Our offensive scheme is looking surprisingly good. And Jac threw very few bad passes. I sure hope he's come along as much as we are hearing that he has. That INT he threw was an awful read, yet he came back and played great after that. Probably a good sign of a maturing QB. 3) I was reserving my comments about the run defense until this game, and I think it stinks. How many times did our new Rover get flat-out juked by a Syracuse RB? I counted 3 times. John Mackey is sorely, sorely missed. There's simply nobody on the interior defense right now that I can say is a run stopper. 4) Give a game ball to the kid (I don't remember who it was, I was yelling and jumping around so much) who made the stop on that 4th down play late in the game, held on, never let go, and dragged the Syracuse RB to the ground on his own. 5) We can't POSSIBLY be the worst team in the MAC, as many of the prognositactors have said that we are. RowdyZip
Greetings from Syracuse. Glad to contribute via cell phone. Great job by the Zips. Great game-day experience. Friendly fans, long bus ride, but quite an experience. More analysis when i get home tomorrow. GO ZIPS!

skip-zip
I know it's only been 2 games, but JDs moving Williams to DB is looking pretty darn good. We certainly didn't have a need for 4 RBs. And being able to identify that one of them could help somewhere else could be just the kind of move that makes us a much better team than people predicted we would be. Nice job. Nice job.And lets give JD credit the other direction too. Andre Jones looked terrific at WR today as well. Takes guts to take one of your best players on both offense and defense a year ago and have them swap sides of the ball. It seems to be working out really well in both instances so far. How many people were holding their breath when Williams went down early in the game?
Zipsrifle
Yea, JD is pretty good at identifying existing talent and moving them to another position. Hixon, Jabari, and now this.
plowerman78
ohio brewing company was a great time today..the rowdies had a great one down there...my thoughts are this 1.) offense looks solid and obviously the strength of the team. I like the fact that we are going under center this year, and not always in shotgun. DK, the A-Train and JJ all looked great today, and the depth of that position was obvious at the end of the game.2.) CJ has grown from last year. The main example I look at is the int he threw, instead of thinking about it and getting all discombobulated he goes out and leads akron down for the eventual game winning score. His decision making is a heck of alot better then last year and hats off to him.3.) The wide reciever trio of Bruce, Bowser and Jones look awesome today. Bruce looks like our Wes Welker type Wr, getting crucial third down conversions all throughout the game. Bowser just seemed to make good solid catches throughout the game, nothing flushy just enough to get the job done. Finally Jones looked awesome today, making catches throughtout the game, i guess the switch to wr looks good after all.4.) Defense  umm yeah not sure what to say, better then last week, but wow gotta play great next week against ball state if we want a chance. If there is anything encouraging about the D is that didnt give to many big plays through the air which they will have to prevent with the duo of Davis and Bell for Ball State.5.) Finally yes its a great win for this team, awesome to go on the road against a BCS school, but we will truely see how legit this team is this week. Offensivly i feel we can keep up with ball state, defensivly im not sold at all. Hopefully the addition of Bain ( i pray) next week will help on pressure of Davis but they will need to play the game of their life to give us a chance at a W. RowdyZip
Just about to head back to Akron. Talked to some SU fans at the tailgate. Theyve been inflating attendence worse than us since last yr. SU fan says the dome holds 55k, that being said there was probably 25k there. 15k after halftime. GO ZIPS! johnnyzip84
A question for anyone who was there: What's your guess for attendance? SU says it was officially 31,000. What I saw on TV looked more like 3,100.This is an interesting question. My bro-in-law (SeeTeeZip) and I listened to the local Syracuse radio broadcasters on the early part of the drive home, and they were hosting a typical post-game call-in show (talk about a group of depressed fans). One SU fan called into question this 31,000 figure as well and he put his estimate at 11,000. Then the host asked him if he was at the game or did he watch it on TV. The guy confessed that he saw it on TV. That made me think that the TV angles must have seriously underestimated the crowd, because based on what I could see (taking into account the 45,000 seat capacity and the relatively high degree of pre-game activity on campus) I would say the crowd HAD to be at least 25,000.Of course, when Merce scored the clinching TD, there were probably only 1,000 SU fans who bothered to stick around to the bitter end. What an awesome experience this was. I had a blast with everyone in the Zip section of the end zone. And Syracuse is a very nice town to visit, with plenty of activity downtown in the Armory Square area especially. Couldn't help but think that UA and Akron could be well served to pattern future cooperation/growth along the SU/Syracuse model (and I think they're already doing a LOT to move in this direction). It made me even more excited about the opening of the Info and I didn't think that was possible

zippyrifle32
i think this is my favorite quote:*The announced crowd of 31,808, and I do stress the word "announced", was the 3rd smallest home opening crowd in Carrier Dome history. Only the 24,605 in 1983 to see Can't St and the 29,822 in 1985 (also Can't St) were worse.

OK they did have a kid named Jim Brown play for them, but I don't recall them being the powerhouse they seem to recall. To be fair, while SU has struggled recently, they DO have a storied program. They've won a national championship (OK, it was a while ago, but how many programs can say this), they were a LEADING program in the racial integration of the game, and they've produced LOTS of star players particularly at the RB position (Ernie Davis, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little in addition to the aforemention and unparalled Brown). zips4ever2008
What a game for the Zips. The offense was really clicking-finally! The o-line did a good job of opening space for our running backs to run through. CJ did well for the second straight week and I like how mature he's become in leading the offense. He did some great ball fakes and even running himself. The defense needs to toughen up a bit. We can't be in shootouts every week. Overall, what a great win for our program. This should give our guys confidence. On a side note, I thought the Big East crew did a good job of calling the game. They gave Akron credit, talked about the MAC, our new stadium and even guys we have in the NFL like Hixon.

ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Traveled to the game with JohnnyZip84 and sat in the end zone with other UA fans. It really was a blast, and the disappointing UA defense, at least on this day, was more than matched by the surprisingly strong offense. Are we entirely sure that Jac is the same QB we watched last year? He looks like a different player out there entirely. Quick decision making, quick release, confident, very impressive in my opinion.Having listened to Syracuse sports talk on the drive home, it surely was nice to be the team that caused such pain and depression in an opposing fan base. We know what the flip side of that is all about! Lastly, as for the SU RB from Copley (Carter), suck it big man. You can gnash your teeth having lost to your home town team, but like another poster noted, you would rarely see the field at UA with the stable of RBs we're sending out right now. How's that, superstar? Great trip, and GO ZIPS.SeeTee

Zipsrifle
I'm very glad for the win, but I'm frustrated with how the media is handling this. The Syracuse media is treating this as if SU just got beat by the Summit County Vocational School JV Practice squad, and the Akron/Cleveland media is treating this like we beat the Summit County Vocational School JV Practice Squad. WTF!?!? It would be nice to get a little credit. Thank god for Razor's blog or he ABJ wouldn't have anything other than what it grabbed off the wire.
