Thanks for your participation here, and all the best to YSU for the rest of the season. You can't believe how many weak second halves it took for the Zips to finally put together what they did in the second halves against Can't and YSU in the last two games! It's a tough learning process to learn how to finish close games against quality opponents. The Penguins could break through at any time. The Zips veteran players did come through tonight. But I think the story of the night is the continuing emergence of Cvetinovic. I'm pretty sure this was his first 20+ minute game, and I see more in his future. Early in the second half, he was tied with Linhart for most Zips points and rebounds. Once again the guards were cold from the field and the front line was hot. Getting the frontcourt more involved in the offense is paying dividents in rebounds, as well, as the Zips won tonight's rebound battle. It's getting easier and easier to believe in this Zips team, because I think they are believing more and more in themselves.
cvetinovic is going to be a HUGE player. I'm real excited about him.

Nice win guys.. You guys are a veteran group that looked so damn strong in that 2nd half. Let's hope the Penguins of the 1st half will be the Penguins of the future. Good Luck in the MAC...
Here is the dirty little secret. We aren't. We are far from a veteran team. Coming into this season we only had two guys on our roster that had more than one year of consistent playing time. This team is finding it's stride. They are learning how to win games and this group as a whole is going to make some noise down the stretch in the MAC.

I hope we can keep the rivalry with YSU going. I really enjoy the NEOhio rivalries - YSU, CSU and Can't - they're always so intense! The games are fun, meaningful and always worth the price of a ticket. Hopefully we can get CSU back on the schedule very soon.
During the post game show, Frenchy said this was the last game of a 4 game contract. He said he didn't think there would be anymore games in the near future. ;)

Hmmm. That surprises me. Trust me, YSU would be open to play CANT or AKRON any and every year in any sport, esp the sport that begins with F... cough football.I'd be shocked if this game isn't played in the future. YSU fans love it, though we get drilled in it!

I personally hope this game continues as well. It's a nice stop in the Valley every couple of years and can help with recruiting. The teams have a long history of playing .. and if YSU is game, we should be playing them every year. Same goes for playing in Pittsburgh every season or 2, be it against Pitt, or Duquesne. There's benefits to these games beyond RPI .. etc.FWIW, I think Slocum can see the corner now. He's not nearly starting to turn it .. but this Penguin team was at least competitive athletically. A couple of years ago, they didn't belong on the court with the Zips .. they do now. Long way to go, but I see them once or twice a season, and tonight some progress was evident.Enjoyed the trek out to Beeghly .. good win for the Zips .. on to Toledo!!Go Zips!

Sorry, equins, the Zips are really young team peppered with a few seasoned players. What yousaw last night was the future. You saw a lot of minutes by true freshmen and red shirts. Humpy is atrue freshman as are Brett McClanahan and Nik Cvetinovic. Big Mike Bardo, Steve McNees, BrettMcKnight and Darryl Roberts are all sophomores. The Zips have just one senior (Nate Linhart).Impressions: Most folks in Youngstown no longer have any real interest in playing Akron in football orbasketball. Dollar night and the attendance was a paltry 2,636 after a fine turn out against in conferencerival Cleveland State. At least two hundred of those in attendance last night were Zips fans.Football? Are you serious? Why go over to Akron for a beatdown with a $250k payout when the 'Guinscan get toasted for a whole lot more capital? Akron sure as heck is NOT playing football in Youngstown. The officiating last night gave ample proof of just why its not in Akron's interest to play football orbasketball in Y'Town. The officiating was extremely biased against Akron. The Zips committed fourteenfouls to just six for YSU in the first half. Fortunately, the 'Guins must be the worst free throw shooting team on the planet.I saw a number of decent players on the YSU team. The glaring difference is team speed. Speed wiseYoungstown is to Akron as Akron was to PITT. Akron is just way too quick for the 'Guins. Anyoneat the game got ample proof of this.Good luck to YSU the rest of the way. I enjoyed their victory over Cleveland State. Too bad YSU already played the mighty Butler. That game would be worth the drive over. Watch out for the upcoming Wright State game. They will make every effort to run up the score so they look better than the Zips.

In fact when formulating their bball schedule Wright State purposely tries to schedule as many of the same teams that the Zips do with the sole purpose of running up the score to look better than the Zips. It's crazy. It's all people in the Dayton area think about.

I made the road trip back to my old stomping grounds last night. Here are a few observations -I see some people slighting the YSU crowd, estimated at 2,200. Like $1.00 hot dogs are going to get people to come out and see a 6-12 home team battle a 10-8 Zips squad? Come on. 2,200 is a freaking miracle for such an unattractive ducat on a frigid Monday night. Even at $1.00.Looking around at the YSU banner situation, it doesn't appear YSU has won any basketball championships or seen and tourney appearances since 1976 (pre-D1)? Good luck turning that Poseidon over, Coach Slocum. One more comment related to the dollar dogs - They didn't run out, and they were served quickly. Unlike the Zips concessions, where you wait 15 minutes...just to be told whatever you wanted had already run-out...these people actually knew how to serve food and move people through a line. This YSU team has decent talent. They defended hard, and I thought their point guard was a player. They were much more disciplined than some of their "street ball" teams of the recent past. But they really didn't have any consistent offensive threat. Nor could they match the Zips intensity...especially Linhart.Linhart came out of nowhere to spike a YSU guard's shot...one of the most forceful rejections I've ever seen. The stunned YSU player was embarrassed and started rubbing his head like he was fouled...poor kid.Chris McKnight has officially moved into "2nd Team All MAC" for 2009. If he keeps delivering the goods through Feb/March, he'll be a 1st teamer."Big Game Brett" McKnight has proven he can show up for big games...like Pitt and K.e.n.t. But "little games" are still a struggle. He missed a lot of bunnies last night where, if he'd gone strong instead of waiting for the foul, he would have made. When he scores 20+, the Zips can play with about anyone. When he scores in single digits, we play some ugly games.KD attempted to get McClanahan on track. Since the outcome was never in doubt, he let him fight through some tough stretches where he typically would have been benched. Conyers also had a much longer leash last night. Neither seemed to take advantage of the extended PT. They both played "ok."We've eaten 2 of our 8 cupcakes. Toledo is next. I expect a game very similar to last night's. But more expensive.cupcakes-thumb.jpg

Huge game tonight. The way the schedule plays-out, it is a great opportunity for the Zips to get on a big-time roll. Can't...YSU...Toledo...CMU....EMU...that's 5-in-a-row! Follow that with WMU...Ball State...NIU...that's 8 easily-winnable games in a row?! That gets "Joe Akron" talking about the Zips! That get's Sgt Zips talking National Championship! This is the stretch where the young Zips can really grow up and start gelling. Getting to 18-9 is very possible.
Ahhh....the prophesy is being fulfilled.... :champs::screwks:
