Zips fan
I saw this posted over on ncaabbs.com as well. I think that this will turn out to be a good hire. Not only is he familiar with the MAC, he was a good recruiter. He might not have had great success as a head coach, but he had to do something to get that opportunity. Captain Kangaroo
I know he was on campus on Signing Day. I'm checking on it, but I would say with 94% certainty it is true.

nickskin
Coach Montgomery and his family are very good people and I'm happy that he landed on his feet. For point of reference his recruiting area was mostly in Georgia. He was directly involved in the recruitment of:2002LB John Busing, Alpharetta, GA -STARTERWR Ryan Busing, Alpharetta , GA2004 DL James Case, Kennesaw, GAWR Sean McVay, Atlanta, GAOL Josh Satterthwait, Marietta, GA - STARTER2005QB Daniel Raudabaugh, Coppell, TX - STARTER2006LB Donnie Hardy, Tucker, GAWR Eugene Harris, Atlanta, GA - STARTER2007DE Morris Council, Decatur, GALB David Davis, Decatur, GA2008K Jim Broadway, Roswell, GADB Brian Sutherland, Smyrna, GALB Jaytee Swanson, Buford, GA

GP1
Interesting hire.Good offensive coordinator, questionable head coach. Being a former head coach will give him some instant credibility with the players. The rumor was always that the players hated him, but I think that is a good thing. Show me a players coach and I'll show you a losing coach. I guess I'm leaning toward this is a good hire.He went to the MAC Championship as a head coach. He must have been doing something right. But then again, if you can squeeze out six wins in the MAC, there is a good chance you could make the championship game.
ZachTheZip
I say he's a good hire. If his players hated him, well that doesn't really matter. His job is to make the offense work, not to be friends with the players. I think all the players with attitude problems have already been weeded out over the past few years. He already knows the MAC environment extremely well, and he knows how to win in it. Too bad we likely aren't playing Miami again next season. One thing I like is that this move shows we are serious about winning and about bringing this program to legitimacy. Good teams hire coaches like this as coordinators. In fact, Montgomery might be the highest profile coach coming in that we've had since a certain guy from Notre Dame. johnnyzip84
Wow. I like this hire, but I'm pretty surprised by it. I'm trying to think of another instance in which a former MAC head coach hired in as a coordinator at ANOTHER MAC school. If this isn't unprecedented, then this list is pretty short indeed. This is yet more evidence of just how much support the program is getting from above, because I would feel pretty certan that Shane will be paid quite well in terms of MAC coordinators. 72 Roo
I like the hire. I agree it shows commitment to the program. Shane was a good OC before he took the reins at Miami and he will be valuable to JD to bounce ideas off of. His value as a recruiter is significant. More and more programs are de-emphasizing Florida and spending more time in Georgia. The Zips need to be able to have a presence in that state. The more I see of the program's changes the greater my hopes rise. I am hoping JD is laying a solid foundation that will carry the program after the excitement of the first year in our new showcase is over. infofan
I like it. Everything I read says he was an excellent OC, if not a good HC. But being fired he had a guaranteed salary coming in. We must have made a substantial financial offer to him and that also supports a strong committment to this program. Other than Can't tech I think most Zip fans hate Miami more than anyone. That being said I believe academically it is a step above most MAC schools and that makes the job there a bit more challenging than here ( can U say Notre Dame). Lets see if any players follow him to UA, as happens with most coaches. Lets welcome him on weds night with a victory in front of his redsweatered cronies at the JAR. zff
It should happen today.SourceMontgomery named Akron offensive coordinatorStaff Reports AKRON — Shane Montgomery wasn't out of work for long.Montgomery — who resigned as Miami of Ohio head football coach at the end of the season — has been named offensive coordinator at Akron University, according to his father, Rusty Montgomery of Zanesville. The school will officially announce it on Tuesday.Shane Montgomery was a star quarterback at Newark Catholic and North Carolina State, prior to entering the college coaching ranks as an assistant at several schools before getting the Miami head coaching job. According to his father, former Ohio State quarterbacks coach Walt Harris will have the same job at Akron. Harris was also formerly head coach at Pittsburgh University."I'm happy he got a coordinator's job," Rusty Montgomery said. "It gives him a chance to get his feet back in and get built back up. They're building a new football stadium on campus and it's going to be beautiful; it seats around 30,000. Plus, they have a real nice indoor facility." johnnyzip84
After thinking about it for a while, I did come up with a former MAC HC who eventually went on to become a MAC coordinator. It's former UT defensive coordinator Tim Rose, who had been Miami's HC quite a few stops before landing in Toledo.Rose Wiki
