GoZips Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 At the PSU match I was part of a conversation where one older gentleman, who has a soccerbackground, stated that Clemson is pursuing coach Porter. This person stated that coach Porter has been offered a package worth about $250,000 a year.I looked up Clemson via Top Drawer soccer web site. Clemson is dead last in the ACC. Soundfamiliar? Louisville was dead last in the Big East. Clemson has a nice, modern 6,500 seat stadium. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Can't worry about stuff like that. There's too much to do this season. Quote
skip-zip Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 If it's true, it shouldn't be a surprise at all. ACC is a premier conference, our coach has been successful, and once again, it's a school with the resources to pay a coach that kind of money to coach a non-major sport. Quote

GoZips88 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Assuming it will happen eventually, I hate it when flush-with-cash, BCS-level SOBs go trolling ... Quote
g-mann17 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Anyone who didn't think a top coach at a top program wouldn't be pursued by other schools is crazy. The question that has to be asked is this, is $250,000 worth moving to South Carolina to try and build a program at a school that really doesn't have much success in any program at the level they play. The bottom line is, other than the money Porter has everything he wants here, and he can go to Wistrcill and say "You've got to give me more money if you want to keep me." I think if the university can match that by 55 to 65% Porter would have no reason to leave. At some point, winning championships is more important than a big pay check (and he's closer to home here). Now if you had said Indiana was going to offer him, I would be worried. The bottom line is this. Proenza wants to be successful, he knows that in order to do so you have to have successful people. Deep down I think he knows that salaries for the coaches are going to have to go up if he really wants the athletics programs to start winning consistantly. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 When Steve Parker was ousted...we rolled on...when Ken Lolla left...we rolled on...if Caleb leaves...we'll roll on...Tradition never graduates. That said - Porter merits more than a token raise this season, and the soccer stadium needs to get off the blocks. Here is where the new AD begins building his resume'. Quote
Let'sGoZips94 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Honestly, if Porter goes anywhere from Akron, it's going to be to Indiana. I don't see him leaving the #1 team in the country for a project. Now he might leave to coach his alma mater, but that's different. IMO, as long as we get him a new stadium, he's staying. But first: Quote

Get Caleb and his assistants a significant raise, make the stadium a reality and get us in a better conference (possibly as an affiliate) and we'll be darn tough to leave. Quote

Now he might leave to coach his alma mater, but that's different. IMO, as long as we get him a new stadium, he's staying. But first: Okay, I know that not everyone values money highest, and I personally would much rather continue to work with the best program in the nation, particularly if I helped put it there, but when you talk about how do you quantify a discount for such things? If you were going to more-than double the money I was making, I might just have to start to find virtue in the challenge of fixing a problematic program. Just being realistic. Even if it wasn't me, I'm sure the wife would apply a hellalot of pressure Quote
skip-zip Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Well, as much as I would hope that this is a situation that is looked at differently, I have to look at some comments here as "wishful thinking".Going all the way back to the Mid-80s Huggins era, the "just pay them so they won't leave" theory hasn't worked out quite like most of us would have liked. The reality is likely that we will not open up our pocket books for a head coach, and assistants, for a non-major, non-revenue-generating sport. And knowing that the program has sustained many coaching changes suggests to me that it's even more unlikely that we'd view this is as a "we have to keep this guy...no matter what it costs" type of situation. As loyal as I am to my alma mater, if I was a soccer coach, and had the opportunity to coach soccer in the ACC for $250k, I'd have my bags packed this afternoon. Sasho Cirovski MUST make that much to make the Turtles so feared. And here's a good article I found (rather college English paper-like, but interesting, and shows the time-line of the development of Wake soccer under Jay Vidovich). The construction of their stadium was simultaneous with the arrival of their program at a national level. It just took off from there. http://rootzoo.com/articles/view/Soccer/NC...he-making_12458 Quote

72 Roo Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Caleb Porter's name is being mentioned as a candidate for the open DC United head coaching job.I would be surprised if he went there. DC United offers tons of headaches, no security outside a 2-3 year contract, and personel problems he has yet to deal with (like international players older than him, making more money and difficult to coach). Caleb seems like a man dedicated to his family also. He would be far away from family, in Kalamazoo and Indiana, with a young son and no family within driving distance. The cost of living in DC would quickly eat up the money a bigger contract would bring. His wife would also have to leave her job. His best years are ahead of him at Akron, especially if the new stadium project is approved by the board. That being said I was also the guy who said Ken Lolla would not leave when the rumors flew. I hope we keep him. But we will have to live with the fact that he will always be getting good offers. Quote
