This guy thinks Akron's recruiting class could be a special one.

I'm not quite as optimistic. You can't judge a recruiting class by just the top few players. It's ultimately the recruits in the middle who will make up most of your team down the road. A solid core of recruits builds depth and keeps you consistent throughout a season. The top few recruits could push a "good" team into "great" territory, but they lack the ability to make a poor team good.

I can't take this guy too serious when he says Rossi may replace Brian Thomas at LB.

If the guy doesn't know the names of the starters on the team, he probably isn't too up on other things.

I caught that too. If he was on the fence with regards to continuing his blog coverage of the Zips, you may have just nudged him to stop :D

I wonder what he thinks of Almondo Lemon's chances of getting a pro try out?

One week until Signing Day. Four spots left. Only two JUCOs known in a class that's reportedly supposed to be "heavy" on them. No Wide Receivers even after graduating all our talent at that position. A bunch of recruits that will be learning new positions. And the class at a glance doesn't look any more talented than what Brookhart used to bring in, although that's yet to be determined.

While I agree with the Cap'n that we really could use a WR with some height, both Russell and Sconiers played well at times for true FR last year. In fact, as much as I am eager to see what the final 2011 recruit list entails, I am just as curious to know if Richard Hall and Antoine Russell have been reinstated. Does anybody know?

What happened to Schrock? He was supposed to be a big time WR recruit.

I respectfully disagree. If we had Cherry/Sparks/Irvin, Russell and Sconiers would be 4th and 5th on the depth chart.

We need someone the caliber of Schifino, Bailey, Cherry, Sparks, Irvin, Hixon, Arthur etc.

What we have now reminds me of Mongomery or Goodwin. We won't win anything if those guys are our in our Top 2 or 3 @ WR.

Both are young, so I could be wrong. But I don't think I am.

I’ll admit that neither has done anything to this point that compares favorably to those Zips receivers of the past. They each made plenty of mistakes (as did the entire receiving corps throughout the year) in 2010 as well. I was just saying that they both showed some signs (to me) of having some talent. Russell, in particular, had a knack for getting separation on the deep ball. Yes he dropped an easy one (KY?), but he was also overthrown at least 3 or 4 other times. Sconiers showed some ability to run with the ball after the catch. Whether or not they develop into contributing #1, #2 or #3 receivers of course remains to be seen.

I’ll make this qualified prediction. IF Russell is still with the team (you have to give me that one!) and IF the QB/Line play is even moderately improved from last year, I predict ONE of the two will emerge as a quality receiver in 2011 (say, 700+ receiving yards and 5+ TDs).

Maybe we'll finally see WR Marquelo Suel this year. He was a JUCO brought in last season, but never played despite our huge need for a reliable receiver.

I thought about him, since he's got decent size at 6'3" 195 LB. But it's hard to imagine that he showed much last year if they decided to RS him (unless he was battling an injury we're not aware of).

BTW, it looks like GoZips is getting prepared to update the roster for 2011 (probably in advance of National Signing Day?).

If they are, it's a step forward in terms of getting timely information put up on the site.

Well let's put it this way. If you go to the Football/Roster section, it takes you to the 2011 roster (which is now blank  ). You have to click on "previous season" to get the old roster. Hopefully, the blank roster for 2011 isn't blank for too long. I know, I know. Don't bet on it :D

Akron has offered two YSU commits each from Warren G. Harding High School:

RB Demond Hymes : http://letsgoguins.com/recruiting/football...hymes-ysu-offer

OL Ian Folmar : http://letsgoguins.com/recruiting/football...olmar-ysu-offer

These offers are within the last 24 hours.... fyi.

We're probably desperate to fill our recruiting class. 4 spots to fill in only a few days. This is probably a sign we aren't pursuing any more JUCOs.

As far as talent, I am not sure. But he is working out and has Akron gear on still in his hometown. FWIW....

Here's an idea: if the recruiting sites say we have a top class in the MAC, ignore it. If the recruiting sites say we have a middle of the pack class in the MAC, ignore it. If the recruiting sites say we have a bottom of the pack class in the MAC, ignore it. If the recruiting sites pay more attention to us other than ranking us in the typical 80-110 range that they usually throw MAC teams into, upgrade your excitement level 5%. Remember, stars don't matter (take a look at the past rankings in our conference), and just pay attention to the field.

Always remember, the national media loves covering MAC football as much as they love coming up with MAC basketball preseason rankings, etc. Remember when our own MAC media outlets weren't even aware of the defections from OU's program and predicted them a landslide victor in 2011? Translate that to prep rankings at this level.

Don't listen to him Zach. You are likely to outlive him (unless you are a lot older than I think and are just a really really really really dumb old guy). Once he's gone, you will always be right.

Its common practice to save two or three spots for the last minute hold outs that get bumped from big schools because they waited too long so the last 4 spots ( or so - there could be last minute defectors) may be good gets or jucos.

does anyone know status of Zach D'orazio and one other player ( dont recall his name) who we signed last feb but later announced they werent going to enroll until january 2011?

Interesting ( if not depressing) to read highlights of last years signings http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/in...sign_a_lar.html and how few of them saw the field or are still in program. Lets hope for best on tuesday.

OL Andrew Hampton from Warren Harding was spotted on campus today making a visit.

This is very bad for us. I know Andrew's parents, yes he's a very good kid and a hard worker, but in no way is he a D-I recruit. His only offers have been Patriot league schools like Bucknell and Holy Cross. Youngstown State isn't even giving him a look. Looks like we're getting a bit desperate.
