johnnyzip84 Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 It sounds like the 1st day of spring practice went reasonably well. The link below has a break-down of the defensive line, with a couple of interesting items. Shawn Lemon is back at DE, and Cowles Stewart is back on the roster. Another good sign is Fleming looks to be on the roster still. This could be like the days when Jack Elway coached San Jose St and his son played at Stanford. Those rivals had some good, feisty games in that era. GoZips Article Quote

MDZip Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 The GoZips report also listed Almondo Sewell as a DT. Hasn't he been mostly a DE? Quote
g-mann17 Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 The GoZips report also listed Almondo Sewell as a DT. Hasn't he been mostly a DE? Yep, but looking at the roster he's 6'1 285, and with his foot speed that makes for a pretty quality DT. You have to remember we ran 3-3-5 so at least one of the the DE's in that has to be a bit meatier. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 It was interesting to see Gary Pride listed as an RB. I would think the new staff has to be exciting for a guy like Pride, who probably wasn't ever going to move from his Special Teams role under the previous staff. Quote
Quickzips Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 I still have my reservations about Ianello, and will probably maintain them until we get a decent sample size of how his teams compete on the field, but I will say this. Thank god the guy is getting us away from the crazy gimmick schemes on both sides of the ball. I don't think I could have stomached another year of the 335 or of watching our QB's standing in the shotgun looking to the sideline for the playcall and then running everything East/West as opposed to North/South. I'm not too concerned about the reports of the turnovers from the offense. This is going to be a much bigger adjustment for them than it will be for the defense. Especially taking snaps from under center. The learning curve will naturally be a lot longer. I am definitley interested to see how this all plays out. Quote

I'm looking for some QB pressure this year and it starts right up front on the line. We might actually have a chance to control the line of scrimmage on D!!! Quote
ZachTheZip Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 Day 2 recap "Of note, four players have new numbers for 2010. Two took advantage of the departures of 2009 seniors Dashan Miller and Andre Jones as Patrick Nicely made the move from #16 to #7 and Bill Alexander, who redshirted last season, moved from #46 to #21. Two others, also redshirt freshman, made the move from linebacker to fullback forcing the number changes. Blake Fraley was #54 and is now #46, while James Heiss moved from #50 to #47." Quote
RACER Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 if i read that right i am glad we are changing to a 4-3 defense.i never liked the 3-3-5.we had to many undersized players on the field.sewell will be a stud d-lineman once again.moving lemon to DE should help also.i still don't think this team does not have alott of talent, but changing back to the 4-3 should help.i did not think our defense played that bad in certain games.when you offense is not scoring points, and your defense is on the feild all day are two big problems. hopefully we can out out some bigger guys on the field this year. I was going to get a 16 jersey if i could have. Quote

RACER Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 last years defense looked like a high school team.the 3-3-5 for jd meant to play 8 guys under 200 lbs. if you think you can win with guys under 200 pounds playing db-lb i guess last year was ok. this team needs to get bigger, and stonger to stop teams like temple from running the ball up and down the field. having team speed is nice. that does not help when a 200 lb is going up against a 300 ol. when the rb is going up the middle. johnnyzip84 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 This could possibly be from a few weekends back, but it's the 2nd time RI has been featured on "quick hits" at this site (link). Football Scoop Link Akron head coach Rob Ianello got them up at 5:30 am on Saturday: “At 5:30 on Saturday morning I got the team up, had them at the indoor facility, and we had a little extra credit assignment.” “A small step forward for team. A small step forward for commitment. A small step forward for everybody being on the same page and trying to work for the same brand.” “One-fail, all-fail.” Quote

The first time Indiana had the ball I could tell we were in trouble unless some defensive adjustment was made (and, of course, none ever was). Indiana was running the ol' 3-yards and a cloud of dust offense on us, but we couldn't stop it - and they were usually getting more than 3 yards. Our defense was bent over with their hands on their knees during Indiana's FIRST offensive possession!!! (Well, first offensive possession not counting the deflating opening kickoff return for a TD.) We were about 5 minutes into the game and I could tell it was probably going to be a long afternoon. Quote
