Pre-season breakdowns

"Expect a bowl bid in the future for the Zips. Just not this year. At least this preview comes from someone associated with the MAC. Of course, he goes for the homer pick in OU.

I wonder if they change their prediction (4th in the East) if they knew Erick Howard bailed on us.

I also question the sentiment of "they're gonna be good in the future but this year will be rough". I don't believe that getting off to a bad start means good things in the future. If you can't win 6 games playing the MAC East, an FCS team, and the dregs of the BCS with the talent we have this year, I don't think you'll ever do it. I don't want to see people waiting for the coach to recruit "his players" or to get some system fully installed. That rarely happens. It's always "wait until next year and that's when things finally click" but it never does. Hearing talk like what's in this blog is already setting up Coach I with excuses in case of failure.

Well this countdown thing couldn't last forever. We're #91!!! We're #91!!! We're #91!!! We're #91!!!

On another note, The Sporting News predicts in their pre-season magazine that Nicely will be the "next big quarterback" from the MAC and he will eventually have an NFL career. In spite of this, I believe they pick the Zips 6th in the MAC East.

Your link doesn't seem to exist.

Hmmm you're correct. They must have taken it down temporarily because I read the full article earlier. They mention all of the expected (scheme switch, QB named in August, Lemon ordeal, Ianello's recruiting reputation) and some it up by saying we should expect some "rookie" HC mistakes in this year of transition. If you Google "JD Brookhart" and look at the "News" options only, the Orlando Sentinel story picking the Zips at #91 will be first in the list of three. I'll bet they'll have it back up tomorrow.

Here is a new link.

I particularly like the video "discussing #s 91-100. However, it's incorrectly titled. It should be "Discussing #93, the Maryland Terps."

Blue Ribbon predicts Akron to finish 6th in the East

Another "wait until the next year" deal. I'm getting sick of hearing that. Next year never comes; building for the future at the expense of the present is a waste. You are either winning or not. Why can't teams win in the present while still preparing to be successful later? That's what successful teams do.

Also, the above link is to the brand-new official MAC football blog. I didn't know they had one, but it appears to be a nicer way to post the conference news than in the extremely cluttered main conference website. There's also one for basketball.

Lindy's preseason MAC rankings

Athlon preseason MAC rankings

Glad to see that we have no playmakers on either side of the ball.

Let's be honest, the men's soccer team has more proven playmakers on its bench than the football team has on the entire roster. The criticism is fair. We are not very good until proven otherwise...especially based on last year's results, which drive these previews.

If you put so much faith in these things, just look at the Sporting News rankings.

According to them, we have a "play-maker" on each side of the ball.

I'm constantly amazed how people put validity in these "rankings."

Finally, a more upbeat preview. We *might* get to 6 wins, according to CFN.

2009 Fun Stats:

- Fourth Quarter Scoring: Opponents 106 – Akron 45

- Sacks: Opponents 26 for 165 yards – Akron 11 for 63 yards

- Punt return average: Opponents 11 yards per try – Akron 6.4 yards per try

To mabye get 6 wins, the fun stats stated must change. I knew that it was a bad year, but I did not think that it was that dismal.

We always fell apart in the 4th quarter last year. If JD's players would have played a full game instead of packing it up after the 3rd, he might still be coaching here. I think it's a matter of strength and conditioning, which is something we have (hopefully) addressed with a new Strength coach.

If I said it once, I said it 10 times last year, our staff could not adjust a game plan to save their....well, job I guess. That is one of the things I will be watching close this year to evaluate iCoach. Win or lose. I think both of our new schemes lend themselves to a better chance of success in this department.

I'm not sure where this comes from. Every game I saw, I saw players playing hard even though they were put in an impossible situation.

Our guys were in good shape, the problem was we deployed too small of a line-up. By the fourth quarter, they wore down. Like DrZ says, the new scheme alone should help this problem.

Rivals has us at #88. At least it's not a "wait till next year" deal.

I do hope we're better than predicted. We can't afford not to be.

#88 may be a tad overly optimistic because if you click on their roster link you will see that they still believe Bain is on the team. It's a no Bainer without his contribution the Zips are doomed.

I realize this projected starting lineup is shaky at best, but I do find it interesting that rivals handed TJ Marchese the starting spot at PK. Then again, with the Zips' dismal performance here of late, perhaps they're using the logic that anyone has to be an improvement.

Speaking of Mr. Bain, if Alex Allen can get a 6th year, why haven't we heard about Ryan? He only played a couple downs in one or two games, right?

If he played six more years, we would only get 12 plays out of him. No thanks.
