Summary - Mack Rhoades is a crafty bugger... the guy knew when to buy, and he knew when to sell. I give him all the credit in the world.

I'm sick of walking out of the home stadium as a loser for 60%+ of the games I attend. I'm sick of rebuilding. I want to win. Now.

You summary makes no sense. Mack left because he had a better job offer. CUSA is a better conference every day of the week. It has nothing to do with the players on the football team.

My summary makes complete sense to anyone with 1/2 a brain.

Rhoades road the wave of Mike Thomas' work, and parlayed it into a sweet job upgrade in Houston.

Rhoades "managed the game" while he was at UA. But he did nothing spectacular on his own. Thomas got the stadium off the ground (that's why it looks like UVA's), and Thomas hired Dambrot. And the search committee that nabed Caleb was formed prior to Rhoades.

Mack took credit on his bio for building the Stiles Center, even though it was completed years before he stepped on campus. The Rhoades administration took credit for a big donation to complete the Stiles Center football coach offices...but that was a donation from JD's father in law.

Mack saw that JD was not not the answer, and he got the hell out of Akron while he had a spotless record. He's no dummy. He's as saavy a dude as I've ever met.

Learn from me, GP1. You'll be a better person for it. You knowledge of UA athletics is pretty weak anymore. Being 400 miles from campus really shows. Your bravado is as big as ever, but you really have no clue what you're talking about. Looking at a box score and ranting about "The Big Dialer" is weak. Alot like ITZ fawning over Charlie Frye's 230 yards passing...after Frye was down 37 - 0 after 15 minutes.

Can't wait for your next Charlie Frye post. It'll be your 1,000th. I'm going to have a snack after I read it.

It's funny how Captain can go from declaring that we have a future NFL gunslinger at QB to declaring this team is completely void of talent. Not a very consistent position if you ask me. If you have that kind of talent at QB, you should beat a HS tea...errr... Gardner Webb, whether we've got Vince Lombardi coaching or my wife.

The mismanagement of the QB should be a future post. 21 passes? Are you freaking kidding me? He is the best player on offense. Let him throw the freaking ball for crying out loud.

If you weren't at a Wake game you'd realize -- Nicely has NO ONE to throw to. LaFrance would be the #4 receiver on any Owens team. None of the other active WR's would even make an Owens practice squad.

Cherry, Irvin, Sparks...and MAYBE LaFrance could have beaten out Montgomery for the #4 spot.

Quit looking at box scores in the Charlotte Observer and acting like you have a clue about what's going on in Akron.

Your a bloated, empty windbag. You credibility is almost negligible anymore.

Time for a snack.

The Captain said Nicely is a solid QB. It's a fact.

The Captain said our OL can't pass protect, our WR's suck, our special teams suck, and our coaching, to-date, has sucked. That is truth.

Truth and facts always mess with a guy that fawns over Charlie Frye's Iowa game. Where Iowa called off the dogs after being up on Charlie 37-0 after 15 minutes. Yes, that was 37 - 0 after one quarter.

Gheezus... do you think everyone on this board was born yesterday? Maybe some of the newbies can be mesmorised by weak hyperbole, but don't pull that garbage with someone who knows facts and history.

O.K., all of you go to your kitchens and have a snack.

If my dull, fetid memory serves at all, its that Charlie Frye took his last snap as a Zip in 2004. Give it

a rest. Charlie makes more money than all of you snipers make combined.

Everyone is testy and upset because most of the more knowledgeable posters are former FB players

and they easily see the sorry state of affairs. Tommy and Ronnie would be getting a pass if either of

them showed any sort improvement in their respective job slot. Neither has.

That is why I, along with several others, am crying out to can these clucks before the damage sinks

the ship. And, sadly, its darn close.

Amazing. Within the same post, I see criticism of a former Zips QB who had some admirable performances against some BCS-level schools, and subsequently broke nearly every Akron passing record on his way to the NFL........and praise for a present QB who, over the past two seasons, has shown us only a couple of dim signs of any kind of ability whatsoever against 1-A bottom-dwellers Ken+ and Eastern Michigan, and I-AA Gardner-Webber.

And I'm old, and have been involved in athletics at the U of A for almost 3 decades.

Spread offense?!?!?! We (well, the COACHES) can barely find 2 WRs they want to put out there, now we want 4-5 guys out there?!?!?

I told everyone my big fear when we had 3 WRs listed for 2 spots in the first depth chart released 20 minutes before the Syracuse game. That was a telltale sign of a problem. And, in saying that, I was shocked to see Carter being only a back-up.

The spread can work, pro formation can work, hell...the veer or wishbone could probably work if you have the talent, the wisdom and the coaching!!!! Heck, some team could easily be the Wisconsin/Alabama/Boston College (3 successful teams with a more "traditional" offense) of the lower FBS= why not Akron???

I am not jumping ship on any of this..chances are, it is NOT one thing but it is a least a little bit of all these things...coaching issues, players not understanding things completely yet (wisdom/learning curve) and having some (many?) areas where we lack talent.

CK's posts are clear as a bell to me, so I guess I have half a brain after all. There is no conflict at all in his comments about Nicely and Frye.

Nicely appears to have the tools to be a solid QB. But he's not great enough to carry the rest of the team on his back, and the rest of this team needs a lot of carrying right now.

Frye had many great performances at UA, but the one against Iowa is not a good example because Iowa took a 37-0 lead in the first quarter and backed off on their defense and let Frye run up numbers.

CK has never stated or implied that Nicely is better than Frye. He only pointed out to someone else that they made a questionable call in selecting Frye's performance in the Iowa game as an example of how much better Frye was than Nicely has shown to date.

From the looks of the statistics, he was 5-6 for 80 yards in the first quarter. Even if you discount the long td pass, he still had arond 8 yards per attempt. He was 2-4 in the second for 22 yards. 7-10 at half for 102 yards it looks like. 5-6 is pretty good. 2-4 is OK.

I don't blame PN as much as I would like to see the ball thrown more. From the looks of the first quarter stats, he can complete passes. Guys can get open. We should have won 45-17 or at least 45-21. There is no excuse for that loss over the weekend. The same talent was on the field at the end of the game that was on the field at the end of the game.

Captain, Nice post. It has sparked lots of comment and that's good. Here's mine:

1) Ianello is here to stay for at least 3 years. Dr. P won't can him and eat most of his salary

2) Ianello has yet to show he, or his staff, can coach. They've been out-coached by two highly divergent staffs. They have been unable to prepare a team. They do not manage a game well and the players are showing visible signs that they don't believe in the staff. Watch the sidelines to see their lack of engagement.

3) Let's stop the typical Akron crap of saying the future will be so much better with the talent the new coach is bringing in. Mismanaged talent = loses. This line of thinking also assumes we will keep what talent we have. History shows that in a losing culture talent either leaves or crumbles and new talent never lives up to billing.

4) Our O-line, WR's and DB's are worse than we ever thought. Blow them up and start freshmen and sophmores who can use the experience. We will not win this year and we will not be a factor in the MAC. So start over now.

5) Get used to crowds of 3,000

6) At some time Dr. P has to address the culture of losing that is synonymous with Akron football. Hire people who have been successful. The best predictor of future success is past success. Once you hire them get out of their way and let them attack the culture. This is an area where I feel coach I is over his head and lacking the vision and skills to solve. That being said, we will have to live with point #1 so I hope iCoach can grow and surprise me.

I, for one, will not be coming to more games. I can't take seeing this type of product on the field. Coming from Columbus I give up a whole day for this heartbreak. I can't take it. I'll have season tickets available for my more courageous local buddies. There's got to be someone out there to turn this around :(

72, excellent post.

I, too, favor playing the young players. Burn the red shirts. If the talent is so bad, aren't we better

off playing the youngsters and developing them? I see real problems with morale on the horizon.

I don't mean to channel GP1 but we just lost to a 1-AA team. Morale is going to be a problem. That is why I like iCoach's upbeat attitude. As long as he doesn't start treating them like losers and keeps them believing that he is putting them in a positions to win, morale should recover.

Cornbread, I don't know if this Saturday will work but I'd like to get together with you and any Columbus Zips in the future. How about sending me a PM with your contact info and we can work on it. Just keep in mind the KY game is going to be very ugly. We may not be able to take more than a half.
