The funniest line in this column is from Gaffney, regarding fan reaction to the 0-3 start: "That (record) has led to disparaging comments from fans who want instant results and credibility."

Oh those unreasonable fans who are dissatisfied with scoring 3 points in the home opener, and losing to a 1-AA team at home the following week...those guys are demanding WAAAY too much from the Zips.

"Instant results?" How about fans that are tired of losing, and who simply want to see some semblance of hope that the team is getting better rather than worse?

It must be nice to be an impartial observer who could care less if the Zips won or lost... or got smoked vs. losing respectably.

Here's an article by TG in today's (9/21) ABJ:

Ianello Seeking Patience

Here's a worrisome quote:

"After the decent start against the Wildcats, UA was dominated in the middle two quarters, being outgained 150-8 in total yards in the second period and 210-33 in the third period.

The Zips had only 46 yards of total offense in the first half and 79 yards through three quarters. With reserves in the game through most of the final period, the Zips managed to finish with 172 yards to 544 for Kentucky.

Of particular worry for the Zips is that the running game could produce only 67 yards rushing on 37 attempts (a 1.8 average). That came against a Kentucky defense that was ranked 94th (out of 120) against the run nationally, permitting an average of 188.5 yards in its first two games."

This should be a worry for us. Even Western Kentucky ran very well against Kentucky's defense.

I know we tend to see a lot of "coach speak" in these articles. We've all done it to defend our team. But, the fans are only going to have so much patience with "we need to get better" as the solution to our problems.

Latest Sagarin ratings in the USA Today:

187. The University of Akron at 0-3

188. Gardner-Webb at 2-1

Those should be swapped at the very least. A few interesting things I noticed in the current MAC standings. Only two 0-3 teams (us and EMU, great). Toledo has beaten both WMU and Ohio to start off the MAC standings at 2-0. Temple is 3-0 (and beat CMU) and actually got a few "Others Receiving Votes" in both the coaches poll and writers poll. They take on Penn State this weekend so we'll get to see how far they've come. The Zips may be a lost cause this year but I'd like the rest of the MAC to make some kind of a showing this year. Wouldn't mind seeing Temple get ranked (at least until we play them). The MAC may be bad but if at least a couple teams rise above the rest, it is probably better for the conference as a whole as opposed to a 5-3 division "winner". At least until we can rise up again.

What would win me over to Ianello would be a response like this:

Gaffney: "Your 0 - 3 record has led to disparaging comments from fans who want instant results and credibility."

Ianello: "Jesus freaking Christ, Tom. I was part of a staff that just got canned at Notre Dame. These people in Akron are starved for what? A couple wins and hope for the future? Try walking off the field at Notre Dame after you just lost to some schlep program like the Syracuse. Then having to go in front of the Chicago media...the National media...then dealing with blogs and message boards that are read by hundreds of thousands of fans! Disparaging comments from 52 fans at a game? Or 39 fans on a message board? Come on. Have you ever been out of Akron? God Bless those handful of sorry bastards that have sat through four consecutive losing seasons. If they're disappointed after an 0-3 start, the uncompetitive, bumbling way we've started 0 - 3, I say GOOD! Because I hate it too. I'm just glad someone cares about our program."

i think the fans just want to see akron make extra points.make short fg.have a defense that does not let a 1-aa team

go up and down the field.have recievers catch the ball when a kid in high school could make that catch.

i watched massillon play all year.i would take thier recievers over ours.i know for a fact #9 for them is better than

anyone we have at wr.he has a full ride to osu.it's sad to see how bad we are at wr.

This would be a good start. Just catch the freaking ball already.

Coach Frisman, fill out a requisition for 9 pair of WAGs today!

I know a guy that uses these in every practice and reached the pinnacle of his profession.

He credits practicing with these as to one of the reasons.
