GP1 Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Mike Johnson named 49ers OC today. I wonder why Mike's name has never come up as head coach at UofA. He only has NFL experience which would come into question, but other than that he is a good coach. I wonder if being head coach at UofA would be a pay cut for him and UofA couldn't pay him what he could make in the NFL. Quote

He increased his salary by roughly 5X. I have to imagine Johnson is now making a similar multiplier above Ianello. UA couldn't afford him. Regardless - Kudos to Mike. He to 26 credit hours over a single summer to become eligible for the Zips back in the late 80's (for those of you that don't know, he transferred from JUCO after a 1-year stint at Arizona State) and has not stopped busting his butt ever since. skip-zip Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Thanks for the update. It takes me back to the "Air Akron" references that we heard so often back in the Johnson QB era. Good memories. Quote

Good memories. He put up what would be considered "huge numbers" in Faust's offense. Nothing like what average QBs put up today, but very impressive for the time. Quote

Nori was a complete tool. Guys I played with that had the displeasure of having him for a coach in the early JD years said he was nothing but a hot head that had no clue how to coach. I'm sure there was elation amongst the team when he parlayed his NFL connections into a job. A few years later, he's at Stow High School. Go figure. Quote

This was right before the Sweitzer and Weems era at QB, with the change to the option pass-and-pitch offense. Faust had Johnson's teams airing the ball out. Quote
MDZip Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Jason Whitlock is on board with it. Mike Johnson, the 49ers new OC, is a good hire. Singletary has 13 games to evaluate Johnson, and Johnson has 13 games to figure out how to call plays. Now Singletary (and his stopwatch) needs to leave Johnson completely alone. Singletary's decision to call timeouts and run plays in the final seconds of San Fran's blowout loss to the Chiefs was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. It also contributed to a 49ers receiver getting injured. Quote
Dr Z Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Easiest fix to Mike's new offense is to get this guy involved in the game plan! I'm sure he would be all for it. Quote

Dr Z Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 I just think the offense can be a little more creative. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Creativity has been a buzzword at team headquarters the last few days. No one has criticized Raye directly, but the words used to describe Johnson - creative, energetic, young - have been telling. Anymore, I'm exited when I see someone older than me described as "young." Quote
Dr Z Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 IMO, Smith is a problem, I would like to see Mike make a change at QB to see how effective it would be. Maybe give Carr a series or two. I'm in the minority though. Mike has QB problems given his choices. Quote

"We're going to continue to go forward with Troy Smith right now," Singletary said. "We're going into the bye week, and as far as Alex Smith is concerned, it's a week-to-week deal. I'll wait and talk to our doctors, trainers, whatever. But we'll make those decisions as we need to." Troy Smith leapfrogged veteran backup David Carr on the depth chart -- virtually sight unseen -- to get the start in place of Alex Smith, who is out 2 to 3 weeks with a separated left shoulder. Congrats to Mike. Quote
Dr Z Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Mike Johnson's offense is rolling now! Quote
Dr Z Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 I wonder if Mike will be on the 49'ers staff next year due to the firing. Might he end up coaching closer to where he played college ball? PS If I were a NFL football team that needed a premier WR, I would start talks now with the 49er GM about adding draft picks for the new coach to rebuild and see what it would take to get Crabtree. Just me, but Crabtree or the 49er's cannot be happy about his season there. Although, a move like this did nothing for the Dolphins this year, but I'd still do it if I was saaaaaayyy playing near a lake. Quote
skip-zip Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 I was wondering the same thing. I was hoping he was maybe on a path to become a head coach someday. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Mike Johnson named UCLA's new Offensive Coordinator. He's back in the college game. Think he could be the Zips HC in a few years after Ianello is gone? One way or another Ianello will be gone in a few years; let's just hope it's because he gets hired away after being successful and not because he gets fired for losing. Quote

If UCLA does not make a leap forward next year, Mike will be one and done at this job too. Quote
