Captain Kangaroo
Thanks to everyone for keeping me up to date as I sat in the Newark airport. Great job Zips! Bring home a National Championship!
zippyfan34
On the linesman leaving the game, here is a quote from Rasor's blog. OK. Here is the unofficial word about the referee. The head referee and the linesman were alleged to be arguing. The linesman marched off the field, taking his flag. The game was delayed while the impromptu lineman searched for a backup flag. I can't vouch for this being 100 percent accurate, but it's some version of the truth. Only in soccer. Halftime stats: Akron leads Cal in shots, nine to six, and shots on goal, five to two. Both teams have had four corner kicks. Cal has committed 11 fouls, compared to Akron's two. Update on the referee drama: Caleb Porter was arguing nonstop with the guy who eventually split. Before leaving, the linesman told the head referee that, "Either he [Porter] is leaving, or I'm leaving." As a result, the linesman has left Lee Jackson Field, and he took his flag with him. Z.I.P.
Thanks to everyone for keeping me up to date as I sat in the Newark airport. Great job Zips! Bring home a National Championship! Big mahalo for all who joined in. And way to go to our team! Akron brings back wins in NCAA quarterfinals, and a huge comeback road win in men's basketball. See you over on that board. Z.I.P.
Anyone know what the delay was after Akron's goal? Ref went over to Cal bench and players cleared field for a short time. I have never heard anything like this! Here is what Razor's blog has to say on the matter: OK. Sheesh! And this follows the debacle in Berkeley, where the game was reffed by a center ref considered unfit for duty, and who gave out like four red cards to UCSB players after the end. Gaucho players encircled the CR, at least one bumping him, forcing security to take him away in a golf cart. NCAA is not looking good right now. GoZips
The half time buzz in the stadium concerning the ejected (yes, he was ejected by the center ref) AR is that he failed to signal the Cal player offside when the Cal player scored the first goal. Caleb apparently was livid and argued with the AR. The CR came in on the dispute and eventually tossed the AR. The AR's actions or lack of action is a flagrant violation. To put it bluntly, he was cheating in Cal's favor by allowing an offside player to score a goal. What puzzles me is why wasn't the goal disallowed or the Zips given a penalty shot to start the second half. The NCAA needs to investigate this problem. It is sad that we now have evidence of NCAA officials CHEATING.

AND FINALLLYYYY: MUCH BETTER job with the audio from the stadium for the big final PK. Nice to hear the crowd reaction again. Wasn't that freaking awesome!? The first goal wasn't even close to offside (I know Caleb thought it was, he was incorrect too)... also, the sideline ref basically quit from all accounts I've heard, he wasn't "ejected". Your grip on reality is tenuous at best, as I've pretty much come to expect from you.

Wow I couldn't really tell what happened because I was behind the other goal...that was phenomenal. Perry Kitchen is an amazing player. Here is an article about him that popped up earlier. RootforRoo44
ASN Coverage That really was a blast last night. And I'm thinking that the UCSB fans might be on the Zips bandwagon thanks to our heartbreaking elimination of Cal. An advantage like that could be huge. zippyfan34
Highlights back up. Yeah but they took out the ending part that had the last PK by Kofi! It was awesome! But that is really smart since it is very possible we could find ourselves in PK's once or twice next weekend. Usually most players tend to just specialize doing one thing with thier PK's (i.e. I think Nanchoff has gone to the same place evey time and last night it was stopped). You don't want to give the opposition any extra scouting. Speaking of which, UNC has gone to PK's a few times in the tournament, anyone know if there is any video of them? GoZips
GoZips88, I believe your prediction just might have come true. David Meves (not my favorite goalie) redeemed himself in the pipes during the PKs.

Maybe his "Grip on reality " is messed up also. Or maybe its because he was ejected from the game? Caption from the photo in ABJ. Official CJ Morgante is escorted from the field by a University of Akron police officer during the NCAA quarterfinal game against Cal at Lee Jackson Field in Akron. Dave in Green
Maybe the police escort was for CJ Morgante's own safety. By the way, searching for CJ Morgante on the internet shows that he's a respected pole vault coach at Slippery Rock who has a passion for soccer. There are also various opinions about his level of expertise as a soccer official. At least one strongly voiced opinion is that he is not competent to work important matches. This story is rippling out pretty wide across the internet, with some people arguing that the officials should support each other when confronted by a coach, and that Coach Porter is the one who should have been tossed. But then, we at ZN.O understand as well as anyone that there is a diversity of strongly held opposing opinions about anything related to sports. fknbuflobo
In my many decades watching this sport, I have never seen a linesman ejected by the head referee. OK, so Porter was giving him a hard time. Big deal! It was surreal watching the official escorted out. Anyone have additional information?
