How Pompous Is This?

Recommended Posts

The Big Ten is obsessed with the past and this is an example of it. In terms of football, the best days are behind it and increasingly moving into the distance. This type of stunt strokes the egos of the blue hairs that remember those days.

Basically, the names of the divisions embody how the rest of the country views the Big Ten. The fans of the Big Ten see it as a great conference with great tradition (best days in the past). The rest of the country sees it as a joke. What I'm trying to say is the names they selected for the divisions are actually perfect.

You're right. 3 teams in the top 10 with 2 traditional powers being way down and it's over.

I am sure Nebraska will only add to the the downfall. After all, adding another traditionally top 20 team with a lot of history and tradition will only further the downfall.

Since you know how the rest of the county thinks of the B10, I think the B10 should just disband and the teams should all join either the MAC, WAC or be independents. Possibly join the Big East or ACC. All of those conferences are obviously superior to the B10.

That being said, the names do suck.

Answer these questions:

1)How many times has the Big Ten had a winning bowl record in the last 7 years?

2)How many victories do the big 3 (Wisky, OSU, MSU) of the Big Ten have vs current top 25 teams other than each other?

3)What is the entirety of the Big Ten's record vs current top 25 teams (not including eachother)?

Read the answers below, or research yourself, and tell me the Big Ten isn't overrated simply because it's the Big Ten. Now I'll admit, I'm one of the biggest Buckeye haters out there, but the numbers don't lie. The media is so far up the Big Ten schools butts that they don't realize their playing style has become obsolete except vs each other.

That being said, a friend of mine summed it up perfect when I asked him what he thought of the new division names: "It's because, 'Going to Lose in the Sugar Bowl,' and 'Going to Lose in the Rose Bowl' wouldn't fit on the trophies."

Answers if you don't feel like looking it up....

A1) ONCE...last year (4-3). Previous 6 years? 15-28 (.349)

A2) ZERO

A3) 0-2 (Alabama over Penn State, Missouri over Illinois)

Like I said, disband the B10. It sucks.

+1 :NCAAC:

I knew we could agree on something Bobby.

All of this conference smack talk derives from the BCS system. You have 3 undefeated teams from 3 different BCS conferences, people are forced to start comparing their strengths. The sooner they implement a playoff system, the better.

You forgot to mention that the medium ten beat up on the MAC in 2010, the medium ten's "signature" OOC victory was versus an 8-4 UCONN team and the SOS of the three medium ten schools were as follows:

MSU-65

tosu-68

Wisky-71

Memo to the medium ten- Play somebody!!

The Big Ten is already a second tier conference like the Big East and ACC. No reason to join them, they are already one of them.

Nice to see that the Big Ten pays attention to popular opinion on ZN.O. ;)

They should contact Zips Win! for several big ten naming options!!!

I doubt they would use a name that had to be censored every time they say it.

I haven't heard or read one person say they like the name. I think the B10 is getting a lot of negative feedback.

Dumbest names for a conference I have ever heard.

The Big Ten commissioner was caught not just with his pants down, but completely off, by this stupidity and isn't sure what to say so he unleashed one of the most dreaded statements in college athletics. In the last paragraph of the link DrZ provided, he says something along the lines of "we are trying to build a fan base". Are you freaking kidding me? It's a BCS level conference and they are trying to "build a fan base". Attention Big Ten commissioner....your teams play in front of sold out stadiums every weekend and you have some of the largest alumni associations in the United States. THE FAN BASE IS THERE YOU MORON. Whenever you hear someone in college athletics bring up "building and growing" it should make you cringe because it is a sign that person has no idea what to do and is buying time until his next job. He may be able to slip that nonsense by the limited intellects of Big Ten graduates, but he isn't getting it by the intellect of this University of Akron graduate (twice).

The second thing the Big Ten should stay away from is marketing the past. I mentioned this on this board when I first saw the stupid division names and I was right. The way they named their divisions tells me they don't have much in the present to market and they know it. Major League Baseball markets the past and did anyone see the TV ratings for the World Series this year? Terrible. Market the present. If what you have in the present is not good, make what you have better. Americans like to look forward, not backward.

The one idea I like about the way the Big Ten is organizing the divisions is they are trying to make each division equally competitive. If they were really smart and creative, they would rearrange these divisions every 4-5 years. You can't make a decision in 2010 expecting to know what the conference is going to be like in 2020 or even 2015.
