InTheZone
Just talked to one of the guys coming home from practice this morning. Apparently Akron Garfield's Chris Wells, the #1 player in Ohio, took an official visit with Akron this weekend and was at the Zips practice this morning. He's already committed to the Suckeyes, but apparently he's rethinking. What a steal this would be for the Zips!! Wow. This guy is the prize recruit of just about every program in the country, including USC. If we could somehow get a guy like this it would launch this program to heights we've never imagined. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE STAY HOME CHRIS!!!
Zipsrifle
That would be a HUGE coup! The odds are against us though. I think the only reason he is taking a look at us is because he would be almost a guaranteed star with the Zips. At the big schools, there will be a lot more competition. He also must be impressed with what the Zips are currently doing and with JD. Of course, he might want to just be close to home. It would be great if he was a Zip! Captain Kangaroo
What's the catch? There has to be one. This kid makes Terrell Sutton look like chopped liver. A couple recruits like him sign and we might catch up to K-ent's class?
InTheZone
Brett Biggs is a great player, but losing him wouldn't be too bad if we had a backfield of Chris Wells, Alex Allen, and Dennis Kennedy for the next 3 years. Of course, this is just wishful thinking, as he will likely still be a Suckeye. But....as a coach once told me long ago, "Don't act like looking at other schools when you're committed is harmless. Do you think if you were married your wife would care if you said you were committed to her but still wanted to go and look at a few other girls? You don't look unless you're thinking about DOING SOMETHING." DO US CHRIS, DO US!!!!!!
zff
Coming Chris you don't have to be like evrybody else stay home and be the star of the MAC for 3 or 4 years and then go make your millions!!!!!!!
InTheZone
I think just the face that the NUMBER 2 RUNNING BACK AND NUMBER 8 PLAYER OVERALL IN THE NATION visited Akron speaks volumes as to how far the program has come in so short of a time. zipsbandman
If this is in fact true and the number one recruit in Ohio is even considering Akron as an option. OMG that completely blows me away. JD is the real deal folks. A kid of his caliber would be an instant star in the MAC. To think Buckey fans would be pissing their pants if something like that happened.
perception
Chris Wells make's Tyrell Sutton looked like chopped liver? You are out of your mind. If you had seen the two run in person you would see that Wells doesn't compare to Sutton or even Copley's Delone Carter in a lot of ways. Yeah Wells is a big recruit, but if you actually look see the kid play or hell, look at some of his numbers, he's not what he's made out to be. If you think he's going to be some sort of savior at Akron, you're wrong.
zipboy
Not sure where he ends up, I am sure that a lot of people are pulling him in different directions. I always thought that if KD was coach and Lebron did go to college, he would have done Akron. It takes a special person to be the first one to say that I am going to stay here and go to Akron. Bonzi Wells did that with Ball State. Wells may be the one to say that for Akron. Get reps, play early on, better facilities than the bucks. close to home, this could be a good situation for him. Buckzip, you made one telling comment at one time that you did not see Akron on the same level as osu. And you are a pretty big Zip fan and a great contributor to the board. And I think you said what a lot of people feel that osu is the real team people root for and Akron is the local team that people root for. If we get a Chris Wells and a couple others like him, does this change your perception? Do you start thinking of Akron as a legitimate top 25 team? Can we be like an Auburn or Pitt to challenge the Goliath in the state down the road as an equal? I know that I am getting way ahead of myself and most people might smirk at this but I still say why not? And I am definitely not trying to rile anyone up, just curious on people's thoughts. I was in Dayton last weekend and out at bw3. SEC title game and ACC title game were on. Dayton was playing Grambling in basketball. Guess which game was on 2 of the 3 big screens and which game everyone was watching. You got it, the Dayton game. Why can't we be like that in football and basketball? Wells is rated the #1 HS RB and prospect by many "experts" that know a lot more then you or I. His HS stats may not match those of others but on pure physical attributes, this guy is the real deal. Carter won all the Ohio awards based purely on stats but rates nowhere near Wells by people who make a living on rating HS players. No doubt, he is not coming to Akron but even the fact he made an official visit, says a lot about the recruiting abilities of JD and where the program is now. Just that visit and being able to say that Wells considered Akron will sway some really good recruits in our direction. JD's a smart one and obviously has a great background in sales and marketing. If I'm reading this wrong and Wells is actually considering Akron -- JD. By the way, rumor has it that Can't signed the water boy from my DIV V HS - they're just killing us out there. Ryno aka Menace
Chris is just weighing all of his options, players have changed their minds after a verbal commitment. But I agree with others he will not be a zip, but recruits come in atleast 10 at a time, If JD is smart he would bring in other "no chance of signing with the zips" in with Wells to show hey the number one recruit in Ohio and country per some experts, is considering Akron. I know what JD is telling Wells...You can either be a guaranteed star or the possiblity of being a big star.

You're insane. This kid is going to be a star. If you think he's the best high school running back in the nation you are a fool. The best running back in the nation would have ran for more then 98 yards on thirty some carries against Hoban. They wouldn't take themselves out of games on crucial fourth and 1's late in the fourth quarter. You all hear that some publications rank him number one and think he's the next messiah. If any of you saw him play you'd agree with me.

Players don't just get ranked #1 or #50 for that matter at their position in the nation off of nothing. The kid can obviously play, as he's been pursued by every major program in America. You really aren't making sense right now.
Big Zip
Lemming ranked him the number 1 player in the country it wasn't anyone on this site. Lemming is probably the Mel Kiper of high school football. I imagine he'll play in the HS all-star game and you can see him then.
perception
I'm not really sure how you can dismiss me as a jealous hater, when I am the only one here actually basing my statements on actual football. I have ZERO personal connection to Chris Wells or Delone Carter. But if you watch them both run against the same defense you would see how much harder it is to bring Delone down. I love Akron and would love to see them get top notch recruits just as much as you guys, so publicity wise, yeah that's great that he visited Akron. But if you go ask area high school linebackers if they think Wells was the best player they faced THIS SEASON and they will probably laugh at you. GP1
Wells would not have even been three deep for Akron this year. The #1 running back in the nation wouldn't crack our 2-deep?? You're insane. This kid is going to be a star. Guys don't typically get recruited based on what they did in high school, they get recruited based on what they can bring to a program in the future. They are like stocks, you don't buy based upon what a stock's past performance, you buy based upon the probability of future performance. There are a lot of stars playing college football who never played on a winning team in their entire life prior to college, but someone who gets paid to find players (college coaches and recruiting coordinators) think they will be a good player someday. If enough of these people think the player will be good, then they will typically get recruited highly regardless of how they played against Hoban. I went to a high school football game for the first tiime in years this year, so I don't really keep up on who is good or not, but if OSU offers a player a scholarship, the player is a really good player regardless of your feelings about OSU. OSU is in the business of trying to win national championships and giving scholarships to stiffs does not move that goal forward. ITZ is correct that if a player is recruited that highly, the school is almost obligated to play him as a freshman to see what he has. The player may not start, but he will get a good bit of playing time. Maybe this kid is just leveraging Akron against OSU to increase his signing bonus with OSU. On another recruiting note (maybe this is in the recruiting section already), my understanding is that the best WR in central Ohio and probably in the state is coming to Akron. I have no idea what his name is, my HS football coach brother told me about him and this news. I guess he runs a 4.2 fourty for real. It makes sense. Why would you go to OSU if you were a good WR and not Akron? OSU is wasting Ginn's ability with that borring off tackle offense and JD coached Bryant and Fitzgerald to award winning college careers. Dr Z
Fear the Roo Chris! JD will make you a superstar. Tressel will turn you into another Clarett. Rivals #8 OVERALL Lemming #2 back OVERALL 2. Chris Wells, Garfield (Ohio), 6-2, 230 lbs., 4.48 After McCoy, the drop-off is hardly steep. Akron native Wells is, in effect, Maurice Clarett with a good attitude. He's the same uncanny combination of size, speed, vision and balance as the embattled ex-Buckeye, and he's certainly capable of doing what Maurice did as a frosh at Ohio State. I think he could become a household name in the first few weeks of his college career. As a junior, he carried the ball 212 times for 1,984 yards and 24 scores
Ryno aka Menace
actually perception I have seen Chris Wells play it was against Barberton and I wasn't that impressed I just figured it was that game, so if I had to make a decision based on that "one" game I would have to agree with you. But there is no way you could get nationally ranked and play subpar football every week.
zipper
Sorry guys, but Perception is right on this one. I saw this kid play, and the common feeling in the stands was surprise at his LOW level of play. He didn't have the heart of Delone Carter or Tyrell Sutton, which is a problem. I saw both of those kids in their senior years and they were players; Wells just didn't have it. Can JD get it out of him? Maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if tOSU planted a bug in his ear to look around a little. The way he played THIS YEAR (after those ratings came out) was a disappointment. Ask the sports writers or any high school players. It's just a fact.
Sergeant Zip
Lemming ranked him the number 1 player in the country it wasn't anyone on this site. Max Emfinger has Wells as a fullback. I don't know why, he doesn't say. He does not have the tickmark that says Max has seen him play though. His site was updated 12/12/05 and he still has him verbally committed to Ohio State. Of course everything is speculation. Nobody knows except for Wells.
zip37
Dom't want to interrupt all this about Wells, so will post this here--WSA Today has the Zips 5.5 pt underdog.
