They've been running articles almost daily. You know, it's really sad when a team's hometown newspaper acts like they don't exist until they start winning, and then hop on the bandwagon. Oh well, I'm just glad the Zips are finally getting covered. Dear God, they're even covering recruiting!!!!

In an unrelated note, I saw the PD mention a few days ago that Ken Lolla went to join Zips former AD Mike Thomas at Louisville.

To see the Beacon hop on the bandwagon now is like seeing LeBron's birth dad pop into the picture once he became fameous.

Personally, I just can't take the BJ seriously. They've thumbed their noses at Zips fans for too long.

You know what would get be to re-subscribe to the BJ? If Terry Pluto wrote a retraction of his column decrying the firing of Lee Owens (you remember the epic "...Akron isn't Ohio State...this isn't Notre Dame..." column. Admit he was wrong and I'll resubscribe. Until then I can't even bring myself to click on their web site.

The BJ had a retraction printed on the front page today as a result of a lawsuit settlement(they lost) from a story they ran in 2001. There was also a story in Sundays paper which explained why the paper has shrunk down to nothing. They are getting squeezed by their shareholders and their advertising revenue is way down. Perhaps if they got down from their political grandstand and started reporting the news instead of making it up they might get more readers. Day after day of BUSH LIED and WE ARE LOSING THE WAR turns people off. Just report the local news and sports.

Not that I'm backing the BJ Sports' every move, but they only cover what people care about. If people are jumping on the Zips bandwagon, which they are, the media needs to satisfy their new interest.

Being a sports editor is probably the hardest job around. If the ABJ stopped covering Ohio State, like a lot of you would like, its circulation would drop like crazy.

I'm not saying they should stop covering OSU. I'm saying that local news and sports should get more coverage. Their biggest problem is that alot of people are now getting their news from the internet, including the ABJ website for free. The market for mass media is changing and they need to find their niche.

i completely agree with you hilltopper. i personally don't think that a local paper's circulation would go down if it covered local events...hmmmm...i actually thought that's why people bought the dang things. :macc:

They're even worse when it comes to High School Football. It seems like every year in their preview they run a huge article about Elden McVicker and Green's program. Granted, he is a tremendous guy and does a great job, but there are so many great potential stories that go by the wayside because all they do is pump up Green, Garfield and Buchtel for the past few years.

I would think a paper like the Repository would be like that with McK and Massillon, but they do a great job covering everyone in the area.

Money talks, bull$#!t walks.  They are printing what will make them money.

The Beacon is making money, huh? Oh, then I stand corrected. Obviously then, they made the right decision to ignore Zips athletics over the past decade.

Somewhere I thought I read that the Beacon was struggling just to make ends meet for...coincidentally...the past decade. I also thought I heard they lost a ton of subscribers. I must have been misinformed.

The Beacon obviously identified a great recipe for success.

I totally agree, The Beacon Journal doesn't even come close to the sports coverage that the repository has!

Terry Pluto is a complete low aiming a-hole. If you aim low, you hit low. Just ask ZipsRifle about that kind of stuff because he knows the bullet typically goes where you aim. Like everyone else in the media, he is to arrogant to admit mistakes. I have no idea how a man of such limited intellect, foresight and knowledge is so respected among his peers. I guess we should all expect that from a graduate of Can't State though.

:screwks: and so does Terry Pluto.

Speaking of Pluto and low-aiming...he's the same guy that wrote "I feel Akron's new stadium should seat 20,000." That was only two months ago.

Years ago, as the multi-national rubber companies were leaving Akron (with the exception, of course, of Goodyear), the BJ frequently editorialized and criticized these acts and branded them, basically, as acts of blasphemy against a community that had given their hearts and souls to the corporate giants.

In the midst of this period, and the resultant job loss which resonated throughout the community, Knight-Ridder (quietly) moved their corporate HQ from Akron to Miami, FL.

That action spoke volumes to me and was but one example of their disingenuous behavior. They have "posed for holy pictures" one too many times in my view.

I always considered this to be one of the great ironies of the BJ's history.

Anything they do to promote the Zips is appreciated but I will always question their motives.

For a minute there.....I thought I was being called a low aiming a-hole. Nice recovery GP1. ;)

Never! You own a gun and know how to use it. An upstate Michigan guy once told a friend of mine from Bloomfield Hills, "Sir, every man should own a dog and a shotgun." Words to live by.
