Dave in Green
I just wanted to see what a clean post would look like without lots of quotes from previous posts in it.
Lee Adams
Is he going to ride in on a white horse? Will he be wearing a mask under his helmet? Will his favorite receiver be Tonto? Will they give him a silver football to throw? And the biggest question of all: CAN WE GET THE GUY HE WAS THROWING TO? and When he gets pissed off at iCoach is he going to leave the Stadium with a mighty "HI HO SILVER AWAYYYYY" I mean really, his parents had some sense of humor. No wonder he is screwed up. Imagine enduring that your entire life. As bad as a boy names Sue. Already brought up earlier in this thread. But it doesn't have to be original. But there is a bright side to this. I think, if he can keep his head on straight, he is the starting QB on day 1. After all, what is the alternative? NOW, if this guy succeeds, just think, maybe we beat Ohio State and he throws 6 TD passes, the media will have an absolute field day, as in: LONE RANGER SLAYS OSU WITH SIX SILVER BULLETS And it puts us on the map. That is a good thing.

ZipZipHooray!
NO, I am operating on the theory that we can only go up from here. Ditto. I think this kid Clayton Moore is going to surprise everyone. Why don't you guys who are being negative about him do a little more research before coming up with an opinion. I am being very positive and agree that we can only go up from here~~ We will all see the truth in action whenever he finally gets to play! He has yet to play a down of Div I football. From what I have read his HS team that he was QB for went to state championship and won. At Gulf Coast Community College, he was the starting QB and they also won the state championship and the Mississippi Bowl. I think we can expect really good things from this kid! Everybody knows juco quarterbacks never pan out. What about Cam Newton and Chris Relf, the senior QB at Mississippi State that won 9 games in the SEC last year, not to mention Brett Favre is another QB with a very modest background. The fact that Clayton Moore had over a 100 QB rating and that he led his JUCO team to win the championship, and also won the MVP award of the JUCO bowl from Mississippi (which is vastly rich with D-1 transfers that have done well in the SEC) shows that he is a winner. Considering we didn't win a single game last year he has to be nothing but an improvement for us.

I'm not sure why the picture of Cam Newton isn't showing up beside my comment anymore. Poohpoohing juco transfers is silly in general and specifically insulting to those we have brought in. skip-zip
I'll say it again. What are the chances that we got Moore to come here with only the "opportunity to compete" for the starting QB job? I don't like to be harsh, but a few of you folks really need to wake up. With almost two years of experience under his belt, we have the #115 rated QB in D-1A. Unless Moore somehow completely fails to show his talent and ability between now and September, why would we waste anymore time?

With that said, I'm not giving up on PN7 yet, he was a young kid with a LOT of things going against him last year. No excuses this year, it's time he sinks or swims. Getting CM, might just make a healthy competition a positive thing for PN7. I kind of expected a few raving reviews of the Lone Ranger after the first practice, I was a little disappointed not to see that. Doesn't mean anything though. The Zips continue to schedule the spring game the same time as my spring golf trip, and with no tv coverage, I have to depend on the good folks at ZN to give me the low down on what they really see in the Lone Ranger. johnnyzip84
I have to depend on the good folks at ZN to give me the low down on what they really see in the Lone Ranger. If I can "wake up" in time, I plan to watch both QB's very closely at the spring game (like a lot of us). That makes this year's spring game one of the more intriguing in recent years. ZipZipHooray! from your knowledge of Clayton and Mississippi/SEC football, I assume you have a close connection to him. One thing I've wondered about Clayton is whether the colder weather might have an effect on his play. Some QB's, particularly those with smaller hands (not saying this is the case with Clayton), can have issues throwing in poor weather. Do you have any insight on this? Roo
Id be really concerned if Moore can't win the QB battle. From all the games I saw last year, Nicely just did not look capable of being a DI QB. Granted he didnt have a good OL, but his throws are horribly inaccurate. He does good up to the ten yard mark, but anything beyond 15 is almost a certain incomplete because he has limited touch. He also doesnt seem to move through is progressions well at all. He locks in and if it's not there after staring, he seems lost. Granted, again, he was a young QB but he had plenty of experience. But with limited talent on this team, its hard to expect much of anything from either QB, so I won't hold my breath for either.

And the new QB will have to deal with many of the same issues. And some of those issues might even be more challenging this year, considering the personnel issues. But, a guy who can throw an accurate football with any kind of reasonable frequency would still make a big difference.

Hey genius, when you say horribly inaccurate did you ever think that maybe just maybe the reciever ran the wrong route. And I think he was the most sacked QB in D1.As for moving through his progressions, we must have not been watching the same games. This game is a team sport, I was recently reading a ESPN magazine and they interviewed the most highly recruited players from past years. Jeff George was qouted " you are only as good as the players around you". If they can get someone to block and someone to catch and run the right routes we will have a good season. Go Zips! ZachTheZip
Our WRs had a terrible case of butterfingers last season. I think Nicely would have been completing 55% or better if the WRs could catch a football thrown directly to the numbers on their jerseys. Hopefully the new generation of WRs and TEs has better hand-eye coordination. Maybe Ianello should invest in a X-Box with Kinect or something to help train the players on that aspect of the game. K92
Patrick Nicely was sacked 33 times last year. Tied for 13th most. Some of the players who were sacked more often you ask? Russell Wilson, TJ Yates, Tyrod Taylor, Dan Persa, Ryan Katz. So, the argument that PN's efficiency lacked due to his being #13 sack victim definitely does not hold water. PN had by far the lowest rating of any of the top 13 at 95.3. The most sacked, Jeff Tuel of Washington State, managed a 133.3 rating to go along with his 48 sacks. PN was ranked 113 in completion percentage, 115 in yards per attempt and 115 in qb rating. (Out of 116 that were ranked.) These are some of the numbers. Place the blame wherever you want I guess. Just do me a favor. Go back and watch the Can't game again.
skip-zip
Akron Football: I get your point in this, and previous posts. You like PN. Maybe Roo is a slight bit harsh with his "horribly inaccurate" assessment, although it's hard to argue. I just question your angry insistence that the extreme innaccuarcy should be blamed on receivers and protection. The problem is certainly much bigger when you lag so far behind almost all of your peers in D-1A. Besides the obvious problems with accuracy that we've seen with our own eyes, in order for your excuses to be true, we'd also have to assume that the other 114 QBs with better passer ratings had good protection and receivers. We know that can't be true, and Keener points out some of the data to support it.

The scheme was also off last year and the two receiver set combined with the quality of receiver meant nobody was open. It is a frustrating situation but only time will tell at this position. I am happy to have both guys competing for starts and ready to go in case of an injury. Welcome back Patrick and welcome Clayton. Now PROVE IT.
