Talked to one of the Akron recruiters today and he said we have 9 commits.

Maybe the recruits or their high school coaches are too embarrased to notify the recruiting services, then. It's a recruiting violation for Akron to do it. Has to be the players, parents, or their high school coaches.

Edit: We only had 14 seniors this year, and one is returning next season with a medical redshirt. So you have to replace 13 players that are leaving. But you also have to make up for being under the scholarship limit. I don't know exactly how far under we are, but the last count was around 10.

So we still need a recruiting class of 20+ recruits.

How cool is that! Committing to a team without a head coach. Let's reward Rodney's confidence with a great head coach hire.

I think this has to be due to Juwon Chisolm and /or coach Okruch (only guy left). Okruch was the guy who was responsible for getting Juwon and he got him before Juwon was about to enter Hargrave. At least that is my understanding. We need linemen...WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Or maybe it was his only D1 offer - that might of played a role - lol

There is more then "One" Coach doing the recruiting for the Zips right now. Based on what as happen at other schools in the past the 4 GAs on the staff hit the recruiting road to visit with recruits that Akron already had an interest in and to discover new ones. For those that might panic at the thought of GAs doing the recruiting consider this:

A-How did the product look on the field last year that was the result of talent evaluation by the last 2 staffs, fresh eyes can not hurt.

B-Also maybe a more realistic approach will take place on what recruits to go after.

Major draw back right now is that you can not tell the recruits who they will be playing for if they become a Zip.

I think the GA's can tell the recruits who will be coaching the Zips in 2012. But the recruits can't tell anyone what they've been told.

I can't imagine any parent committing their son to play for a University where the head coach is completely unknown. Unless they are the world's biggest Vince Okruch fan. And we know that is Dr Z, so that's off the board.

Could be I have no 1st person knowledge but, I'm this was limited to on campus contacts only. NCAA rules limit the amount of coaches that recruit off campus. With the staff fired I'm sure the GAs have hit the road, maybe they can walk into the doors of Ohio High Schools that the recent staff could not find.

And another new verbal!

De'Andre Scott, a defensive back/returner who played at Hargrave Military Academy after starring for the Patriots in 2010, committed for a full ride to Akron.

Scott can say the same thing. In January, he will join Akron's program, which is currently in transition. After the Zips went 1-11 this season, going 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference, head coach Rob Ianello was fired and his replacement has yet to be named.

Scott took his official visit to Akron (Ohio) over the weekend and gave his commitment to the school's athletic director, Tom Wistrcill, and special teams coordinator, Vince Okruch.

After attending Hargrave, where he improved from facing tough competition, Scott wanted to enter a program where he could make an immediate impact.

"I looked for a place where I could fit in and play as a freshman," Scott said.

Scott said he will be utilized as a cornerback and kick/punt returner. He was being recruited by several other teams, including, Kentucky, Temple, Bowling Green, Ohio University, Villanova, Monmouth and Minnesota.

During his official visit to Akron, his father Darrick joined him. Scott had another familiar face -- Hargrave teammate Rodney Carroll was also taking his official visit. Both decided to commit to the Zips.

Scott had some advice for athletes being recruited by colleges: "I want to tell everyone else, it's not where you want to go, but where you're appreciated."

Scott said he had scholarship offers coming out of TJ, but he attended Hargrave to work on his SAT scores. At Hargrave, he also sharpened his football skills while getting bigger, faster and stronger.

"It helped me get back what I lost," Scott said. "It helped me out a lot physically and mentally. Off the field, it helped you mature as adult ... with character and study habits. And my knowledge of game got stronger. The competition is serious, you've got to be ready to play."

I have heard Okruch is a good and relentless recruiter. I hope we keep him on the new staff. He is a good guy and good coach.

3...Vince is awesome! By far one of my favorites on the staff during both the Brookhart and Ianello regimes.

Another new verbal for the Zips! Cornerback DQ Johnson from Iowa Bluffs CC has given a "solid verbal" to Akron.

And a new offer reported: DT Ekpen Iduoze from Milford Academy.

Recruiting sure seems to have picked up since the "great recruiter" left.

Rivals just graded DQ Johnson as a 3 star. He wasn't given any upon his commit. They must have reviewed tape after he gave a verbal somewhere.
