Captain Kangaroo
Who can name a Freshman that has made a bigger impact on the program than Nate has this year? Peterson and Wood come to mind. I'm sure there are others too. IMO Nate isn't doing anything outstanding, he's rock-solid but not spectacular. It will be interesting to see his progression from Fr. to Soph. When I first saw him I was thinking "Brian Wood" all over again. I was wrong. He'll be way better than Brian Wood ever was. Zips Win!
Hmmmm. I fail to see where he's made much of an impact so far, but KD sure likes him. He plays a lot of minutes, has a few assists, a couple of points and gets a few rebounds. Actually, he reminds me a lot of A. Hip his freshman year, without the scoring ability. Speaking of impact, how much of his playing time is attributed to KD wanting at least one of his high school recruits over the last two years to pan out--so he gets alot of time with a veteran team? Milum, Walther (gone), Nate and Rybek haven't exactly lit up the league.
Zip Watcher
Who can name a Freshman that has made a bigger impact on the program than Nate has this year? I have to agree with CK .. Peterson was clutch as a freshmen .. as was Wood.Ball as a frosh was pretty solid.Andy as a freshman was crazy though. I remember thinking after he made Marshall or someone look crazy at the JAR that we were looking at the first real chance at an NBA player from UA in a long time. He could have been awesome. What a matchup nightmare he was early on. That damn game at Western Kentucky will always be one of THE darkest days as a Zips BB fan for me. Hands down.Damn shame .. he had anticipation and vision that you don't see too often.
Hilltopper
Couldn't agree with you more about Andys fate after the WKU game ZW. Jammals freshman year featured him scoring 43 against CSU in a duel with Mouse Mcfadden. That had to be the biggest crowd ever at the JAR. There were bleachers instead of the blue upper seating and people were sitting in the ailes because it was packed. I'd have to say his freshman year was the best for me. :macc:

Milum, Walther (gone), Nate and Rybek haven't exactly lit up the league. This is a good point. Recruiting is huge for the future of any program. I'm not going to pretend to know much about basketball, because I don't, but I do think I notice a good athlete when I see one.The young players on this team don't look like the type of player that would scare me if I was a good MAC player. I see some kids who play well together and hustle, but nobody really strikes me as a great athlete. Ultimately, good players win games. Do we have the players to sustain long term success? Romeo is a good player, but does he have the skills to be the "go to" guy every team needs?By the way, can I get a hall pass to miss the game Saturday? zipsbandman
Keith Dambrot can coach. It's obvious that he knows how to get the most out of his players. I question the last few recruiting classes. Before I go on, I will say I like this McKnight kid we are getting next year. Can we please keep him eligible and see him on the court next year??? Aside from the year we acquired Travis, Joyce, and Wood I have been very unimpressed with the recruiting effort. Milum needs to put some meat on his bones or he will continued to get pushed around. Walther is not even here anymore and I was not even impressed with him. Wood is a waste of time. What the heck is up with Conyers? Linhart and Ryback are just all right, not the blue chip athletes I would prefer on the court. And when will we get that 6'10/6'11 post that can give us an imposing inside game? We are too small. Ohio worries me in the MAC because we may outplay them as a team and come in with a good gameplan, but will our talent and athleticism be able to match theirs or the other good teams in the east when the real war starts? Hard to believe it has been 20 years since that CSU/Akron game. I wish I took pictures of the JAR. No one would believe it today...7,500 people. True story.Does anyone honor the 20th anniversary of our last NCAA appearance this season? (Coincidentally the same anniversary of my "breakout" intramual 13-point effort vs. The Stormtroopers of Death?)
RobC2
Ha! 13 against the Stormtroopers of death! That's funny.Jimmal Ball would have to be my favorite freshman of all time. He was lightning quick & explosive! Seemed to stagnate under Hipsher & especially once Jamie Bosley was on board. It didn't seem as though Jimmal thought he was 'the man' anylonger. Never did have much of an outside shot though.Hipsher was a much better all around player, I just think Jimmal was exciting to watch! It was fun to pull for the little dude!I agree with being underwhelmed at the raw athleticism of Dambrot's recruits over the last 2 years. He does get credit for bringing in Rome, Joyce & Wood, as well as getting Derrick Tarver to transfer in. But Linhart & Rybak just don't pass the D-I eyball test, do they? They may be fundamentally sound, but man, they're not going to strike fear into the hearts of anyone. Not to sound mean, but they just look like 2 stiff white boys. Where are the dudes who KD says he wants - athletetes who can run the floor?
CPAZip
I was at the CSU game and people were sitting 3 deep on the running track. The fire marshal made some people leave.
Zip Watcher
I've got full confidence in KD. Both his coaching and recruiting.I'm not going to be surprised to see these guys (Linhart & Rybak) develop into John Reimold types down the road. We've got some good athletes on this team. Don't forget about Cedric .. and please don't dismiss Jimmy .. he'll be a Zips star. But you need to have BASKETBALL players in there too. Athletes don't always make a winning team. Linhart's a ball player, and I think we'll all be thrilled if he turns into a Reimold or Yost down the road.Trust in KD. The Zips are 9-3 and just getting started. This is YEAR 2! Zipster
What he said.So what if we don't have anyone that "scares" anyone. What we DO have is a winning record. I would have given my left foot to be in this situation 2 years ago. We are 19-1 at home so far, C'mon people! So whatever it is KD is doing......keep on doing it! I, for one, am not going to question anything. I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy the ride. Go Zips!
Hilltopper
Your right CK, I got my point guards mixed up. Ball was like all the other players that played under Hipsher, he got worse as his career went on. I've asked him about this many times and his answer is that Bosley was treated differently than other team members and the other players(ANDRICK) resented this. Also coach HIP wasn't the easiest guy to play for. Anyhow I think KD's system doesn't need a "goto guy" and thats reflected in his recruiting. Team players who share the load and will work hard. MRasor0200
You guys are underestimating Conyers, Middleton and Linhart as future stars. They will need more depth at 4-5 position next year. That worries me.Dambrot must be counting on 6-9 recruit Chris Bardo from Oak Hill, Ohio. zipboy
I look back at the Can't State team that made the Elite 8 and the only guy who looked inposing was Gates. Zips Win made a good point, Linhart reminds of a young Andy too. Once he went in the starting line up, we sure have been able to rebound better and he is a good passer. Bubba and Milum were already signed before KD got the job. A third kid backed out (Allen Hanson?) and we get Cedric. Maybe not an all MAC guy, but a solid contributor. I like Linhart a lot, Conyers was supposed to be the guy, and Rybak was brought here to be a shooter. I can't say that I am disappointed with the classes. I know that I like being 9-3 and beating an SEC team though!
RobC2
Has anyone seen Conyers play? Is he even on the bench sitting in street clothes? I hear he's not allowed to practice w/ the team? KD says he's a explosive high-flyer. I think we need more of that type of player. As far as the 4-5 goes, next season we'll have, who? Rome, Wood & freshmen Chris McKnight & Mike Bardo, right? Anyone else? We lose Rob Preston & Matt Futch.
RobC2
And Captain Kangaroo,Mike Bardo is from CINCINNATI Oak Hill - not the yearly D-I basketball factory Oak Hill Academy in VIRGINIA. I think Oak Hill Academy (VA) is ranked #2 in the country right now.But hey, he's still a big 6-9. Hopefully he can REBOUND, REBOUND, REBOUND!!! zip37
Those of you taking shots at Linhart-- let me say this: he is ALWAYS where he's supposed to be, especially on D-- you are too focused on scoring-- shooting can be negated by DEFENSE-- rebounding, good passing and defense are effort related as Huggs says, and are. or should be, constants. With ball ammunition lock and load .
