MDZip Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 I got an e-mail that the mens basketball golf outing will be Sepember 19th this year. I really enjoyed it last year, but sadly won't be able to make the trip this year (I suspect our foursome will be the better for it ). I did have to laugh though when I noticed the return email address for the event ended in @osu.edu. I didn't post this for OSU bashing because I don't care about that, but I did find it funny that a fund raiser for a significant UA team would have return email address other than @ua.edu. Anyway, the outing is a lot of fun and I'd encourage people to play if they can. Quote

I'm guessing it would indicate that whoever is organizing the event happens to work for that University down south? Quote
taxpayer Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 Could one of you technically versed please provide a link to the outing? Thank you in advance! I hope that this event will be heavily attended to provide more resources to Coach D to continue the ascent the program in on. Quote

I hope that this event will be heavily attended to provide more resources to Coach D to continue the ascent the program in on. I actually can't find a link anywhere which I find surprising so I am posting the flyer that I got. One of the things that was fun last year was having the opportunity to talk with Keith with a small group of 5 or 6 of us. Price stayed at $150 for this year. As a side note, I wore my Zips basketball shirt from it a few weeks ago and when I was at a place called Fort Union on the Montana/North Dakota border, the reenactor at the site asked if I was from Akron. Turns out he was an OU grad from the 70's and kept up with the MAC. Even knew the Zips had won the NCAA title in soccer last year. I like wearing my Zips gear in unusual places because it often gets conversations started. Quote
taxpayer Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 Thanks MDZIP for the info. I'm puzzled that a decision was made to have a weekday "lunch" as opposed to dinner. The obvious answer is that lunch allows a morning flight and an afternoon flight but has this event been so popular and financially rewarding for the program to not hold it on a Saturday or Sunday? Do you all think there is enough interest to hold an evening dinner with the AD and Coach D holding court? Would the players be allowed to attend? I believe some of the golfers would attend both events and the working stiffs who can't make a week day event would be given an opprotunity to mingle and contribute as well......what do you think? This would be a little more enticing thay simply penning a donation check. Quote

Having the event start early is better on a weekday, leaving the opportunity for the participants to still get to the office for part of the day. If you're trying to attract large $$ donors you don't hold your event at a run of the mill public golf course. Most country clubs are closed on Mondays and do not host non-member events on weekends. The players have not attended this event in the past. They are in school. Quote
ZZZips Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 Hilltopper has it corrrect. If you want to use a great private course venue then you have no choice but to have a Monday event. This outing has significantly increased participation since moving from a public course to Silver Lake CC (2009) and Portage CC (2010). The afternoon flight was added due to the morning flight being sold out and more golfers wanting to participate. If you have any questions you can call or email Amanda Aller in the Men's Basketball Office. Her phone number is 330-972-7781 and her email address is ama38@uakron.edu. Quote

I get it that a nice country club setting is preferred and I'm thrilled to hear it's well attended. Do you think having a dinner or cookout with some speakers including Coach D would be a well attended financially productive addition to the Men's fundraising efforts? Quote

Perhaps you should call Amanda Aller and request a meeting with coach Dambrot to present your idea to him. I would imagine if someone was willing to put the work into setting up such an event, KD would be glad to attend. Quote
taxpayer Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 I will contact the basketball office and propose such a dinner/fundraiser. What would the attendance be, in your opinion, if it was a hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks and Coach D speaking event? Quote

What would the attendance be, in your opinion, if it was a hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks and Coach D speaking event? Thats a good question. I would guess there were over 200 at the end of the year banquet and around 100 at the golf outing. Good luck and if you make it happen I will be there. Quote
Hilltopper Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 I had a great time at the golf outing today. Got to play in a foursome with former Zips standout Brian Roth and new ticket solutions manager Anthony Di Fino. Even with the rain drops falling we managed to shoot 8 under. I would like to know what the other ZN.O guys shot so I can collect my $1 from CK. Next years outing will be back to the usual date of the third Monday of August. They announced there will be a bus trip to the WVA game on November 28th. I'll be there for sure. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 20, 2011 Report Posted September 20, 2011 What I learned yesterday -- Mike Bardo was no threat to be a 2-sport athlete @ UA...at least not in golf! The shot of the day was Mike bombing a 290 yard drive on Hole # 14....a 170 yard Par 3! Overall, we had an excellent time. It was a treat playing 18 holes with the MAC Champ Gonzaga Swatter!Us hackers finished at even par, which was amazing, considering our collective lack of talent. The rain wasn't bad at all, although the guys that tee'd off in the afternoon might tell a different story. No real inside scoops from this year's event. The rain drove the luncheon indoors, and Portage CC was not set up to accommodate so many people. We were placed in three separate rooms. No Coach's speech...or if there was, I couldn't hear it.I think I won a door prize...but they pulled my number before our group got to the banquet room...so they just pulled another number. That was the only complaint for the day. Always a fun time. I look forward to it being held again in August. Quote

Dave in Green Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 This is great news. Dials is a winner, and I'll bet he learned a lot working alongside Charlie Coles at Miami. Don't know if volunteer assistants get any kind of compensation. If not, hope he works his way into a paid position. Not that I'd wish for one of the other assistants to leave. But you never know when an assistant might get a better offer somewhere else and move on to create an opening. Quote
Valpo Zip Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 So was he let go from Miami? or he still had a job from which he walked away to "Volunteer" with the zips?I am not sure which scenario is worse. Quote
