fear the brown roo Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 gee, what a surprise that is Quote
bobbyake Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 The biggest mistake of the day was talking about OSU on the front page of today's sports section. Quote
Z-Pouch Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Along with playing the wrong team, they really screwed up the picture caption - "Nate Linhart of the Zips going up for a shot over Buffalo's John Rybak". Well, Linhart's not even in the picture and it's the Zips John Rybak "attempting" what I think was supposed to be a lay up.Is it really that hard to proof everything? The paper was crap this morning -- You have important Akron and Can't BB games and football Signing Day and it looks like the Beacon staff took the day off or all went to the Cavs game.Today's Beacon Quote
UADavid Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 gee, what a surprise that is With a 100% increase in the newstand price, I'm glad that their standards haven't changed. Quote
Dr Z Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Today's Beacon Drop the word "Today's" and your on to something there Z.PS Whomever is/was involved in the timeout graphic that shows Zippy beating upevery other mascot in the mac to the sounds of thriller, my hats off EXCELLENT JOB. Quote
RobC2 Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 The Beacon Journal was once again painfully disappointing this morning. Both Akron and Can't State had simply HUGE b-ball games last night, and it was NCAA NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT DAY! However, the front page of the Beacon featured the Cavs and Ohio State recruiting?!?! Terry Pluto's article was on... the Cavs?!?! How disappointing. How enraging! Do they have an agenda to undermine Akron athletics at the B.J.? Today should have been an absolutely HUGE UA sports page day. TONS of inside info on our new recruits; insights into last nights UA and Can't State games; a tantilizing preview of Saturday's enormous matchup. But instead, the Beacon has sold us out once again.Honestly, I don't believe UA will ever be considered a serious sports school until the Beacon starts treating it as such. I don't know if that will ever happen. I believe they are financially captive to Cleveland sports and OSU. How disheartening.Even so...Go Zips!!! Quote
JP Morgan Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Honestly, I don't believe UA will ever be considered a serious sports school until the Beacon starts treating it as such.No way, The Beacon has nothing to with it. As I've said numerous times, the Beacon is 2nd rate, not the U of A. I think it time for a "Beacon Sucks" emoticon. We can post it every time they screw up. Hell, it may be end up being the most used emoticon. To think the Beacon "will come around once we start winning" is a farce. Is Can't getting any better coverage today because of their recent success in B-ball? The Beacon does not dictate who WE are, we dictate who WE are. The University needs to do a better job with self promotion in the community. It's one thing to get the good people out in the community, its another to command their attention. We have made strides and UAM's out of the box thinking is moving us in the right direction but we need to beat some"big time" programs in football and basketball and get some national pub. Forget the Beacon guys, we don't need 'em! Quote
Hilltopper Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 They printed a retraction today for the Rybek photo screwup. I disagree JP, we do need the ABJ. It starts at home, if the ABJ won't cover us who will? Quote
GoZips Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Our problem with the Leakin' Urinal is with their management. Until such time as they accept that they are a newspaper that serves northeast Ohio and not the Columbus area we have little hope of changing how they treat sports. For a while the Zips got great coverage right after there was a serious campaign of letter writing complaining about Columbus State getting top dog treatment. It only takes a couple of letters to the editors from the eighty year old mind set whining about where are the Columbus State stories to cause them to revert back.Write more letters. Quote
JP Morgan Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 I don't see the Beacon ever changing their opinion of the university. They feel we are a community college with sub par sports programs. I think it may have to do with writers and managment. I haven't researched it, nor am I going to waste time doing so, but I would guess most are not from NE Ohio. They don't know anything about the University and didn't take the job to spend their days writing about the Zips. They want to e-mail their friends and family the stories they write on the tribe, cavs, browns, OSU etc. They want to be considered a "major newspaper." Serious coverage will only come with continued and sustained success on the field. If we win, serious National and Local coverage will come. I refuse to conceed that we "need" them. When you depend on some else to define you, you're stuck with what they come up with. I say define yourself! Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 I am ashamed to admit it, but...on my way to the airport Thursday morning I bought a Beacon Journal. ("Stupid" being me). The tiny recruiting column buried inside the sports section was absolutely pathetic. Z-E-R-O insight. Dr.Z's review of the press conference blew Morgan's GoZips.com cut-n-paste garbage away. Morgan could not have watched any of those tapes. I guarantee he simply read the press release from his Main Street cubicle and wrote his gratuitous little piece. Best recruiting class in the MAC 2 consecutive years....MAC champs...and we're on page 5 with a cut-n-paste column. Sad.Morgan also managed to screw up Jabari's eligibility too. He'll be a Junior next year, not a Senior. I know, I know...and editor's job is the hardest one in the world.... I haven't even gotten to the photo of "Buffalo's Rybek"...or was it Linhart? What a cluster f*ck. 16-4 and their putting us on page 5 and screwing up names left and right. I know, I know...and editor's job is the hardest one in the world.... :rolleyes:I kept hearing about the great job the Beacon was doing covering the Zips and figured I'd give it another shot. The Beacon still sucks. They still take Akron fans for fools. I will never spend another dime on their rag again. What the F was I thinking? Quote
fear the brown roo Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 it's ok capt., you're only human. i fell for that too. i thought the beacon would do a good job the day after a huge akron sports day. i think the "mr. thrifty" does a better job Quote
ZipAnalyst Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 My family has been a BJ subscriber many, many years. First step was to go from daily to weekend. This week we got a "renewal notice" for the weekend subscription. Guess, what? We sent the following message: "non-renew." Failure to adequately cover the Zips (I have two degree from UA, my wife had two degrees and I have two daughters with UA degrees) is just one factor for my decision but a significant part of it.Whoever is making their decisions is not accounting for families like mine. It's not that we are anti-OSU (one of my daughters has an OSU degree) but our ties and many in the area are to the Zips. One has to wonder what the future holds for the ABJ when longstanding subcribers like us peel off?
