Keeping tabs on the Zips non-conference opponents

It's no secret that the better our non-conference opponents do, the better our own rankings will look.

Tonight, we should be rooting for the following:

Valparaiso at Georgia Southern 7:30 PM

West Virginia vs. Oral Roberts 9:00PM

Middle Tennessee vs. Austin Peay 8:00 PM

Florida A&M at Georgia Tech 8:00 PM

North Carolina A&T at Creighton 8:05 PM

VCU vs. St Francis (PA) 7:30 PM

Marshall vs. Alabama State 7:30 PM

Normally, key non-conference opponents are those that are ranked higher than the team being discussed. The Zips were ranked lower than Marshall prior to the MSU win. After the MSU win, the Zips moved up to #82 in the Pomeroy ratings, right on top of Marshall at #81. As long as the Zips keep winning and building on their MSU win, they will increasingly come into more of these discussions.

Games on slate today:

Duquesne vs Green Bay, 1:00pm

Middle Tennessee at Loyola Marymount, 6:00pm

Cleveland State at #7 Vanderbilt, 2:00pm

Marshall vs Jacksonville State, 4:00pm

Loyola-Marymount defeated #20 UCLA to open season. Hopefully Middle Tennessee can beat them today. Duquesne will hopefully get their first win today, Marshall should go to 2-0 today, and Cleveland State has a large task ahead of them today in Nashville.

Cleveland State leads #7 Vanderbilt 37-24 at the half on ESPNU...

CSU still up 52-45 with 7:16 to go.

Beating the Vikings will be tough, especially up there. They bring that typical pressure defense and tough, physical rebounding. Keeping Long etc off of the offensive glass will need to be a priority. The little FR PG reminds me of DJ Cooper in a way.

High praises for Akron from the announcers of the CSU game!

Cleveland State easily beat an over rated and point guard-less Vanderbilt.

CSU controlled the paint at both ends by clogging the middle. Even though

Vanderbilt was a good bit taller than the Vikings they blundered by forcing

up weak shots and poor rebounding. The Commodores gave away a game

they could have won. Hats off to a scrappy and dangerous CSU.

One other factor was CSU's relentless and sticky defense. Their defense

is better than Akron's because they guard with hands up. The Zips are

still playing defense with their hands in their pockets. It ticks me off.

No way should Hiram score over 40. Our defense is still loose and soft,

like baby poo. Sorry, I am calling it as it is.

Agreed, that the TV announcers gave Akron a lot of good pub because

these guys called that game. It was music to the ears.

@The Hip Zip, I thought you were kidding about that game time. But I see that the Can't-West Virginia is, indeed, scheduled to be telecast by ESPN Tuesday morning. The scheduled time, by the way, is 10:00 a.m. EST, not 8:00.

The game is part of ESPN's fourth annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon in which the network is broadcasting 25 straight hours of college basketball.

Check out this crazy schedule.

If you think that's crazy, as a college hoops junkie I made all but a 2 hour block last year. The high octane coffee is in the basket, ready to brew.

Both the Detroit game tonight as well as the Flushes/Thuggins matchups are intriguing. All three teams have a shot of being very, very good. Keep in mind that the Titans are playing tonight without their center and I still think that they win. Minnerath is one of my favorite players. He's 6'8" with great outside touch and yet enough muscle to handle the 4 spot.
