Z.I.P.
The "we lost" SMU message board thread Akron is a fantastic team. I know they didn't finish the year ranked #1 or anything, but it's obvious why they're ranked in the top 10. That team is LOADED. -- Akron is very athletic and exceptionally fast. That doesn't make them better soccer players, but it sure doesn't hurt. Some things can be countered with schematic adjustments, like double-teaming a stud pass rusher, denying the ball to a great shooter in basketball or intentionally walking a great hitter. But this team was flying all over the field. -- Ben Hill is pretty good. Earlier in the year, he got spot duty when Juan Castillo got a rest, but it's time to give this guy his due. He's really strong and created some space in the offensive end because he couldn't be pushed around. He'll play more next year, and deservedly so. -- Our defense played pretty well. Their offense played better. The first goal (by #10 - Maddux?) was great, a diving header on a cross from the other side of the field, bouncing the shot into the lower left corner. The second goal, by the bald kid (I think his name is Holmes) was better, a free kick that he absolutely crushed through a gap in the line. Maybe Ibarra was screened or something, but it looked like he never saw it, or maybe it was such a hard shot that he didn't have time to react. Shot could have been 20 yards longer and would have gone in. The third goal might be the best goal I ever have seen in person: Maddux chased down a loose ball, shook off an SMU defender who was trying to tackle him (football tackle, that is) and kept his head enough to turn and somehow get a shot in under the crossbar from a very tough angle. No idea how that thing went in. -- Maddux got two goals, so he'll be viewed as the man of the match, but I really liked that bald kid (Holmes). He held possession all day in the midfield, and it seemed like he had the ball on a string. For a while, it looked like our guys were flailing at the ball, and he was the reason why. He seemed like the point guard who makes that team go. Akron was the better team tonight and deserved to win. When we were down 3-0, I didn't think they were three goals better, but it also felt more convincing than the 1-goal margin on the scoreboard. Maybe 3-1 would have been appropriate. Thank you SMU fan, on behalf of the hair deprived!
UAsoccerchamps11
Since the NCAA already moved an Akron "home game" 600 miles away, I have zero faith that when given the choice of having the game in Akron or in Charlotte the NCAA will pick Akron. Six reasons the game will be played in Charlotte: 1) Charlotte was higher "unseeded" than Akron 2) Akron has better attendance and does not mean squat in terms of revenue to the NCAA who rakes in millions off of American football. 3) Akron soccer fans travel better than Charlotte fans. 4) Caleb Porter has brought far too much attention to a sport the NCAA wants to go away. 5) The NCAA really does NOT like Akron. We all too often upset their "apple cart". 6) The weather in Charlotte is nicer meaning that the NCAA officials who have to travel to the game have a better chance of getting in a round of golf. Actually, on sunday Akron is suppose to be 54 with a 40% chance of T-Showers. Charlotte is suppose to be 59 with 40% of T-Showers. So the weather would have been the same at either location. Please read the second part of the statement. better golf weather for the NCAA officials. They don't give a rat's pitootey about game weather; they want great golf weather. Let us be totally honest. The NCAA has put every stumbling block in Akron's path more than once. Remember the not so home field advantage of 2008 when the Zips traveled to play in Evanston, IL? That was on a field in far worse shape than Akron's pitch. How about seeding Akron 9th in 2007 when the Zip's RPI was like #4 forcing Akron to play at both UCONN and Maryland? Two games ago we witnessed the most blatant and disgusting officiating by a referee determined to give the game to Northwestern. And at SMU reports coming back of much the same kind of treatment. That is why it was so easy to predict that Akron's next game will be played in Charlotte. We can fully expect the same blatant one sided officiating as the NCAA will hinder the Zips at every step. All this said: We are Akron; just get it done. Go Zips ... !!!!!
Zip_ME87
I love seeing the Blue Flag waving in front of the camera, I wonder how many Zips fans are there representing. That had to be my flag, all 6 of them made the trip to Texas without me. Fantastic turnout at the Barley House tonight 30+ at most at one time. Not bad for a late notice. Thanks to everyone who were there. If the next match is in Charlotte, I hope the University promotes a watch party. If two bums can bring out 30+ the day before in mid afternoon, imagine if the University would promote a 3rd round watch party. That was your flag, Crew8. Thanks for sending them, and KUDOS to the 4 Rowdies who drove 19 hours one-way to support their team. It was also great to see the Ampaipitakwongs at the game even though Ampai was back here in Akron. I knew it would be fun to face SMU in Ampai's "backyard" (so to speak)...SMU is only about 15 minutes south of Carrollton, TX according to Ampai's parents. zippy5
They're seeded higher. If we were seeded higher and didn't get a home game because someone draws more fans than us, we'd be angry as well. They should get the home game, they earned it and we didn't. Yeah, no complaints about this one. Losing to MSU, Michigan, and tying WMU sealed our tourney fate. Nevertheless, we can still pull it together and make it to Alabama! Doug Snyder
I plan to make the trip down. Do you and Hilltopper want to join me on the trip down?? I will drive....but you know how small the Mini is ;-) If there is a bus...I am taking the bus. A 1,000-mile round trip in a Mini? So what do you have to offer for the people you don't like? Unfortunately, I can't work this trip into my schedule. When I made the offer I assumed the game would be played before 2PM. That would have allowed time to drive home...however late. Now with the start time in the evening, it will be next to impssible to drive home and get to the JAR the next day in time for the bus trip to WV. I could sleep on the bus but since I snore (rumored only..I have never heard anything) that would put me at risk with other Zip bball fans. I will have to watch online or stop up at some watch party. And...who said I like you ??
Z.I.P.
I'm not sure whether Charlotte deserves to host, versus having the best official NCAA golf weather -- I mean did we offer to bribe them with Firestone versus their Pinehurst? However, it appears that Akron is not the only one to get screwed over...According to the NCAA.com bracket, Creighton, the #2 seed receives a sealed invitation to play at #15 UC Santa Barbara! According to the link you posted the game is in Omaha. edit: probably better golf there than in CA.
