marky
hey guys, first post here. ive been reading this thread and wanted to give you a heads up on what i know. my dads girlfriend works for akron, used to chat it up with Ianello, here's stuff from some pretty reliable sources. i can confirm that tressel was at akron on tuesday because of the head coaching job. i do not know how the meeting was, if a deal was offered, if he wants to coach, etc. but she said something that got me pretty excited. she said that akron is going to really make a push for the show cause rule. now when she said that, i figured that didnt mean much at first. but apparently we're very excited about the opportunity to have a chance with him and we're apparently going all out for him. obviously we're going to push hard for the show cause rule. so it sounds like they're a little deeper in conversations then we think... what i guy out of all of this is that he was at akron, visited, talked about the job opening and the show cause rule. not sure what it means, but sounds very good. and it also may be in fact rumor. the only fact out of this is that tressel was at akron on tuesday. ill update as much as i can as soon as i find out more. if we get him, i see ... oh, and

Update, Tressel has told Akron hes not interested, and the hot name is Paul Withers. It's his if he wants it

It's his if he wants it If there is ANY validity to "Withers" being offered the job without UA first conducting a serious search and then interviewing qualified candidates, it must mean only one thing. TW is taking the safe route in order to save his job. I do not believe they would hire Paul Winters without first conducting a valid search. I call BS on this one. marky
Let me rephrase. He's the hot name, and is the leading canidate as of right now. Could someone jump in? Sure, but right now Withers has the inside track. And this is not my first forum rodeo at all. I'm on two other sites and HATE when people write bs on it, so I wouldn't do that. Take it for what it's worth.
ZachTheZip
All the hype about Tressel has proven that the community wants to be excited about Akron football. They just need someone to be excited about. I hope Wistrcill takes note. We need more than just a coach, we need someone who will create a buzz. If Toledo's OC is really our second choice, then we will make another huge hiring mistake. We simply cannot afford to wait until the new coach "builds" something over the course of a few years before they manage to win enough to excite the community. A coach finally getting to six wins three years later while languishing in obscurity won't do jack to help the program. The coach needs to be recognizable, someone people are interested in keeping tabs on while he struggles to fix things in the early goings. Last time, I said the same thing about what our coach needed to be. Instead, Wistrcill hired a no-name nobody with no real resume. I hope he's learned his lesson. I don't think Paul Winters is that guy. I do think Terry Bowden is. People understand the name Bowden. The only people who recognize Winters are the hardcore fans from over a decade ago. That won't excite the community enough to throw their support behind the program. Carl Pelini and Brian Polian are other good names.
mes102
A friend of mine told me late yesterday afternoon, that in all the midst of Tressel talk, he didn't talk about Tressel to me. He told me Winters was in the fieldhouse today(which was yesterday). I immediately told him it was probably someone else because he's preparing his team at Wayne State for their DII national quarterfinals game against Minnesota-Duluth this weekend... In the MAC and the worst team in D1 in 2011. We can only get a big name if they want to come here. We have to work within a budget and we have limited market appeal right now. It's very similar to how the Cleveland Indians struggle to land big name free agents. Terry Bowden is a name, but there are several schools with bigger programs than Akron with coaching vacancies right now. Why wouldn't one of them offer Bowden if he is all that, and why wouldn't he accept one of those schools over Akron. I'm from Akron my whole life, an alum and a season ticket holder. I'm not down on Akron, but we have to be realistic, and we may not get a name here. That doesn't mean we can't get guy capable of turning this thing around just as fast as one of the names above might.
marky
Obviously if they find someone they like more they'll get him, but Withers right now is the lead candidate.
mes102
Just about all of us got caught up in the Tressel hoopla. However, there was a lot of people out there that wanted to start a rumor, just to see how many people would say "I have a source that said... .... ..." , and then laugh about it with their other buddies that did it as well. Well, I hope those people are happy. Because that could of potentially scarred this football program even more by doing something like that. You now basically have people saying this when we get our new head coach, whoever it is: "It's not Jim Tressel, so why should I go to the game? We're still terrible..." I'm going to be behind our new head coach 100%, and I'm also going to feel sorry for him. He's going to have to deal with these shenanigans as well. Will not surprise me if attendance numbers were about the same from Ianello's first year...because this got too out of hand, and WILL have consequences... You couldn't have said it better. I might be willing to give Winters the benefit of the doubt, though, and I'm not sure about Pelini or Polian. I really wouldn't want to be responsible for making this hiring. Like 2 years ago, people's expectations are so high...this HAS to be a home-run hire. RE: marky says Mr. Withers is the man! RE: mes102....you are spot-on, the "planted rumor" shenannigans caused more harm than comedy.

After the name "Tressel," no other "name" carries any weight in Akron Ohio. Pelini? Polian? Bowden? Have all three of them walk through downtown Akron for 10 days, wearing one of those "HELLO MY NAME IS" stickers on their shirt, and see if one person recognizes them. Will not surprise me if attendance numbers were about the same from Ianello's first year...because this got too out of hand, and WILL have consequences... I called my brother who lives out of state to tell him about the surreal frenzy occurring over the Tressel rumors yesterday. This board was nuts, and the re-tweet feature at Twitter getting an overload workout. You are probably right that many people will now be dissappointed with almost any coach who is selected. That's a shame, but it may not matter in the big picture. On Friday last week most of us desperately wanted to get rid of the coach, and probably figured our options for a new coach would be promising D1 coordinators, or possibly a couple of people with modest head coaching resumes. And that it would take a couple of years to become truly competitive in the MAC, and to really fill the stadium. So, we are right on track with where we were before the Tressel flirtation. There is some hard work to be done with this program. There are no quick fixes. Let's get a passionate coach and get on with it. Go Zips!
