..... That being said, this was a blog, not an article put out officially by the Repository, and was written by some jerk-off nobody who I guarantee has no "inside source" close to Tressel. Just a guy giving his opinion, like everyone else. Wouldn't put much stock in it.

Sorry, but I happen to have an inside source on this one. The journalist has a good record and his sources were also good. It's just that they were not infallible. No need to trash someone just because we don't agree with their conclusion. ;)

Until Tressel or the University make a statement that says something to the effect of Tressel not coming to Akron, I will be a believer that it's true. I still believe Tressel will be the next Zips coach.

+1

The Canton report has too many flaws to crush my hopes. Plus, Tressel was on campus Saturday, 100% positive on it.

I don't get your point about him being on campus? He was at an Ohio University game earlier this year. And he was at a Can't State game too. He was also at a Youngstown State game. He was also on the campus of Ohio State on Friday. He has been on many campuses in the state of Ohio. And knowing the man that Jim is, I'm sure he wasn't of Robs turf the day he got fired. That's not who he is.

I'm sorry you don't share the same hope that I do here. Good news is, we wont have to wait long to find out the truth. I'll sleep like a kid that goes to bed before Christmas.

I guess all the people I've talked to who know Jim personally are wrong. As are the sources the Canton Rep has. I guess facebook and twitter know more than us.

Canton Rep did not take down the story.

IDK who your inside sources are from within the department, but if they are really sources who are in the know, they would not be leaking any of this out I'm sure. Esp since they know Tressel to Akron would be a long shot and end with disappointment if you didn't get the big name.

So sources who are in the know wouldn't leak info, but people close to Tressel would? Makes sense...

No reporter is trying to get views on their story. I think every reporter hopes they get the story right 100% of the time.

He didn't name his source???? None of you who claim all these insane offers are made or he's going to accept have named your sources.

I've talked to people close with the Watson family. They all said he doesn't want the Akron job.

The media is reporting the same thing. You all are acting like your 10 years old. If you're going to be mad at someone be mad at Tressel. Don't say the media and us are trying to prevent this from happening.

I want the best, realistic, football coach for Akron. Dreaming about something that won't happen, then blaming others for it not happening is insane! GROW UP!

Gotta love the guy bashing people citing personal sources following it up with...personal sources.

BTW, the guy that wrote that Canton story did not do a good job on his report. That's why it's a blog :P

Error #1 - He assumed Incision is not used for high profile meetings.

Error #2 - He made a statement about where Tressel was without a single mention of evidence.

Error #3 - He did not quote his anonymous source, and is referring to his source's opinion that doesn't specify whether his source had a direct conversation with Tressel about this topic. You could assume they had a conversation about college football, and he made an assumption based on that without any mention of an Akron job.

That blog is very poor evidence that the Tressel - Akron thing over.

Whew, I can't keep up with the pace of this thread. I think the only hope here is that wildfires tend to eventually die out if left on their own.

Ask Texas how well that works.

I suppose the message board equivalent of a "back fire" is a secondary rumor purposely started to prevent the spread of the initial rumor. In that case, we're screwed since we've already been asked nicely to refrain from putting out false information :)

Don't let this Indians06 guy get you riled. He's the type that knows nothing and just gets his jollies off acting like he does on an internet message board. What he says doesn't make this any more or less likely from happening, so the best thing you can do is not give him the attention he's craving. That'll be my last acknowledgement of him.

This whole guessing game is fun, but futile. The Tressel thing could happen, or it could not happen. The more it is not acknowledged by either side, the more it makes me think that something is in the works. I know some people in the athletic department that have been there since I played, and they gave me the heads up last week that the Ianello firing was coming. I've asked them about the Tressel thing, and even they really don't know what's going on. If something's happening, it's being kept tight to the vest (pun intended), and the only point that we'll know for sure is if there's a flat out denial or he's hired. Until that time, keep having fun with it, but like I said earlier, it needs to be reeled in if TW knows it's not happening.

Good post.

And i agree, it's been fun...but i think the lack of acknowledgement bodes well for us having a shot. It means that he's thinking about it.

It looks like Tressel did decline the offer, the University made a very strong attempt for him.

Tressel not interested in coaching job at Akron

By Tom Gaffney

Beacon Journal sports writer

Published: November 29, 2011 - 11:34 PM

Despite rumors to the contrary, Jim Tressel will not be the new football coach at the University of Akron.

Tressel holds a graduate degree from UA, but he will not be a candidate to replace Rob Ianello, who was fired Saturday night after two seasons that produced identical 1-11 records.

“While Coach Tressel has shared with us that he is not interested in coaching at Akron, he has graciously volunteered to help his alma mater however he can during the search for our next football coach,” Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said in a statement released late Tuesday night.

Radio and Internet sources said Tressel, a former coach at Ohio State and Youngstown State, was on campus Tuesday.

Many of those same reports said Tressel was at Rhodes Arena on Saturday night for the basketball game between the Zips and the University of Detroit.

Several university officials who attended the game said Tressel was never there.

“He is going to draw a crowd anywhere he goes and nothing like that happened,” said an official who did not want to be named.

Rhodes Arena has approximately 5,500 seats and none offer any privacy, so Tressel would have been easy to spot.

Those same officials said that Tressel definitely was not on campus on Tuesday.

At the news conference to announce the firing of Ianello on Saturday night, the media was told that Wistrcill would not field any questions about candidates until the hiring process was complete.

He issued the Tuesday statement in response to the rumors that had taken on a life of their own.

Tressel, 58, was an assistant coach with the Zips from 1975 to 1978 under former Zips coach Jim Dennison, and received a master’s degree in education from UA.

He coached at YSU from 1986 to 2000 and at Ohio State from 2001 to 2010.

Tressel resigned his position at Ohio State on May 30 after failing to report NCAA violations by his players.

The Zips have instituted a national search to replace Ianello. No timetable has been set to name his successor.
