I absolutely love this hire. Just when I thought it couldn't get much worse for Akron football, they totally redeem themselves by bringing in Bowden. TB is arguably the best guy available not named Tressel. Go Zips!

Nice Dumb and Dumber reference (kind of an odd one considering the hire is NOT dumb... :-).

Great hire!!!

I like this quote by Todd Porter:

"Landing Bowden is a coup for the Mid-American Conference school and gives Akron a high-profile football coach second only to Ohio State’s Urban Meyer in the state."

Linky

After three loooooong years it looks as if we've finally seen our first effect of The Info.

Makes one wonder if the athletic department would have even tried to contact him. If that's the case, then Wistricill is still a fool.

Like B&G, I too said some pretty uncomplimentary things during this ordeal and pissed some people off in the process. Sorry 'bout that.

I was thinking about it last night in bed, about how frustrating this whole process was, and came to the conclusion that I had earlier said anything was better than keeping Ianello for another year. "Anything" was what we all were living through during this search and although it seemed like the most absolutely dark and dismal days we had ever seen, Ianello still had to go. I felt a little more at ease when I thought about it in those terms.

I had gotten on ZN.O for the first time today to kinda state these feelings I had last night only to see 6 pages talking about the Bowden hire. Wow. What an emotion swing.

Hopefully the football board will return to its kinder and gentler nature now. Prolly not. :D

Reinforces our belief that folks here on ZNO could've done the job for FREE that UA has now squandered $75,000 on: search committees. We were calling for Bowden two years ago, let alone a month ago when this process started. Like you, CK, I do wonder if TW ever even had Bowden on his wish-list. If he did, then why did he drive to Detroit and offer the job to a guy he snubbed two years ago? Did he somehow think Winters would do something for UA that a top talent like Bowden would not? How deluded is that thinking?

No, I rather suspect that TW fell into this one back-asswards, and may come out smelling like a rose thru no effort of his own.

Maybe he was just keeping his options open?

Regardless of how it played-out, I am grateful. Merry Christmas to us.banana-santa.gif

Yes. Very interesting. This was mentioned by ZipRoo & LZip in the "Fire Tom W" thread.

Action can't be kind and gentle? (Hint: last line of my previous post was a little joke.)

No, Sorry. You are right.

You can't even let one small comment go by without making a contradictory comment about it. Carry on!

I dont think he was making a big deal out of your comment, just making more of a joke.

Relax man...it's a good day for the University.

I don't remember who the QB was in 86 (still in high school), but it wasn't Andy. Andy was a redshirt frosh in 87.

Andy didn't get hurt, he got benched for the first series of the game against Louisville. I'm going off of fading memory here, but here it goes....We were destroyed the week before by Deleware State 52-27 or something very close. Andy threw three pick-sixes and we had a punt blocked in the endzone for a TD against us. Nobody would even look at him on the sidelines. Faust wanted to shake things up the next week so he started Mark U. and we drove down the field against Louisville (In that old minor league baseball stadium they used to play in) on the first drive and scored. Scoring with Mark U. in the game was too much for Faust to handle so he pulled him the second series and put Andy back in. We ended up losing by around 21 and only scored 10.

That spring, Faust brought in Mike Johnson to be the started and Mark U., during the summer, went to the ABJ and said the job should be his. The next day he was removed from the team.

Oh, the Faust years.

I remember watching the Louisville game on TV. And we've discussed the Delaware St debacle here before.

Someone has to recall the 1986 QB. I'm pretty sure Vernon Stewart was a SR in Dennison's last year (1985). Maybe I'm mistaken.
