skip-zip
I don't remember who the QB was in 86 (still in high school), but it wasn't Andy. Andy was a redshirt frosh in 87. Andy didn't get hurt, he got benched for the first series of the game against Louisville. I'm going off of fading memory here, but here it goes....We were destroyed the week before by Deleware State 52-27 or something very close. Andy threw three pick-sixes and we had a punt blocked in the endzone for a TD against us. Nobody would even look at him on the sidelines. Faust wanted to shake things up the next week so he started Mark U. and we drove down the field against Louisville (In that old minor league baseball stadium they used to play in) on the first drive and scored. Scoring with Mark U. in the game was too much for Faust to handle so he pulled him the second series and put Andy back in. We ended up losing by around 21 and only scored 10. That spring, Faust brought in Mike Johnson to be the started and Mark U., during the summer, went to the ABJ and said the job should be his. The next day he was removed from the team. Oh, the Faust years. I remember watching the Louisville game on TV. And we've discussed the Delaware St debacle here before. Someone has to recall the 1986 QB. I'm pretty sure Vernon Stewart was a SR in Dennison's last year (1985). Maybe I'm mistaken. Johnny. I get confused between the last year of I-AA, and the time Faust came. Faust coached us for one year in I-AA before we swtiched, and I now think Vernon was indeed the QB.

johnnyzip84
Thanks for clearing it up for me GP1 and skip-zip! So Bowden worked with Vernon Stewart. I somehow forgot that, but I sure don't forget Faust losing the last game of the 1986 season over in Stambaugh to another 1st-year coach (whose name will not be mentioned) 40-39 after a series of wacky events. akzipper
Link If there is one thing to be said for the 90's...at least we beat Can't and Temple a lot We seemed to handle Can't during the 00's too, but the 10's not so much. Best of luck to Terry Bowden. I think it was a decent hire, but much better than Winters or Campbell or anyone else realistically mentioned here. Hopefully he can save our program and take it to new heights! With our luck, probably not...but still there is a little bit of hope now
MDZip
His Wikipedia page has already been updated. Happy about the hire, but do wonder a little about the ten year gap between Auburn and UNA. UNA was good all three years he was there. And his dream job is said to be WVU. How long until someone starts worrying about that? Crap, I think I just did.

How long until someone starts worrying about that? Crap, I think I just did. I mentioned in another thread (and was quickly swatted down) that one of the things I liked about a Winters hire was the prospect that UA would be the destination he had always hoped for. With so many coaches in the crappy MAC jumping ship after a couple decent seasons, the thought of a KD for the football program sounded very appealing. One poster said that Bowden is 55 years old and would not likely be attractive to larger programs as a job jumper. I'd like to hear from knowledgeable posters about whether a head coach approaching 60 years old (assuming a few good years at UA) would have a chance to jump to a WVU or similiar program. Assuming Bowden does well here, how attractive will he be to larger programs in three or four years?
akzipper
It seems like UA is really dragging their feet now. 3 hours ago was the tweet from Zippy, now 90% of Zips fans know. You don't need that on Twitter. Just say the coach's name and it's official. Say a write-up is coming later on gozips.com and stop delaying while things snowball out of control. Such a useless marketing department effort... We have a great marketing department. It's just the fact that it has to be "safe" for them to post the announcement. It's not UA's fault that the information got leaked so much sooner. As long as it got people to follow on facebook and twitter, it was a good idea. Isn't a frenzy a good thing? The more excitement that can be created the more people talk and the more it builds. There is nothing wrong with building peoples interest. To me, this is working, I doubt it is meant, but it is definitely working. People are talking, people are excited, people I never expected are contacting me. We went from no one paying attention to the program, to being front page of ESPN and CBS for a bit, Plain Dealer, Beacon, Canton Rep and we were trending on twitter. The "leak" was on purpose. People follow footballscoop on twitter. Akron leaked it to them, social media has done the rest.

PB1719
Just an Idea, Bobby B. as director of football ops? It's not as high stress as being a coach again, but gives him an opportunity to be around the field. BTW, I'm upgrading my season tix to priority reserve as well. ZachTheZip
The problem is the danger of it becoming "old news". In the world of Twitter, things get old fast. The longer you wait, the less anybody continues to care. If you want your announcement to make a splash, it has to come when the frenzy is just about to peak, to drive it to new heights. tbozeglav
I understand what everyone is saying. Yes, its creating a buzz. Hell, even our hire is running on ESPN's bottom-line ticker right now. However, there is a point where "purposefully dragging your feet to generate buzz" transgresses into "bad publicity because you won't announce something you said you would a long time ago". We're very close to that right now and they'd be wise to say SOMETHING or face people beginning to view this more negatively. Like others have said, just make it "official" internally, approve a tweet and a facebook post saying a full-writeup will be posted on gozips.com and move on. Thats simply how social media works now. **EDIT** as ZachTheZip said, news on twitter and facebook get old FAST.

On a day when Pitt also has hired a new HC. We are old news the minute that happened, even if our hire happened after. No matter what they will overshadow us, since it is a bigger school in relatively the same area.
