Akron vs. EMU

In other MACtion, OU destroys CMU by 26, but loses DJ Cooper to a wrist injury. No word on severity yet.

That would be a huge loss for OU if Cooper is out for any significant length of time. Although a part of me also wonders if OU wouldn't be just fine without him. Talented as Cooper is, his tendency to play hero ball has hurt OU at times, and they do have a talented freshman in Stevie Taylor coming off of the bench at PG.

In regards to the EMU matchup, this one really worries me. We haven't been the best team at times this year when teams have gone zone on us, and EMU plays exclusively zone defense. They have a 7'0" who can match up with Zeke as well. If the Zips keep with their trend of turning it on and off throughout the course of the game EMU can keep this one close and potentially steal one from us. They aren't as good a team on the road as they are at home, but they have the potential to pull some upsets. Zips need to play hard for 40 minutes. Does this group have it in them?

It is impressive to see how far out EMU has had to defend because of our hot shooting early. Without the deep bench and our good ball movement, I think this has exhausted them and led to weak knees and poor shooting when they were on offense. A great example of good offense being one of the best defenses. Dare I ask: Is this what Coach Porter would call Dominant Basketball?

The intensity is there for us tonight. Some careless turnovers, but overall pretty solid. Let's hope our poor streak of free throw shooting is an anomaly. If we are the same team coming out of the locker room, we should cruise to the W.

I cannot figure out what went on with Harney. He did not get into the game in the 2nd half until 10 minutes left and got a T within 30 seconds. Keith was arguing with the ref about it but he took Harney out. Harney returned with 4 minutes left and had 2 turnovers. He did score and had a nice pass to Tree for the dunk. Does anyone know why Harney got the T? He was waiting to throw the ball inbounds after someone fouled out.

Harney had a bunch of turnovers...he got called for a travel twice in a matter of 40 seconds at one point and throw at least three TERRIBLE passes.

No doubt his worst game as a Zip.

The starters actually played a great game today. That's why minutes were cut.

Riley was a bust. I can see why he left Syracuse. Zeke wins the big matchup by a bunch.

Harney seemed to have problems with EMU's zone. Tonight was a learning experience for him. He'll get better against zones.

If EMU had any kind of offense, they could be a pretty competitive team outside of the MAC West.

The only team this season that has scored more points and had a higher victory margin against EMU was Syracuse, which won 84-48.

The Zips' passing game wasn't perfect. But there sure were a lot of quick, crisp, accurate passes being thrown. That was a key in breaking down the EMU zone. The Zips also had 20 offensive rebounds. Nice!

The Zips continue to improve, game by game. There's still plenty of room for improvement. But overall I'm pretty satisfied with the progress they're making.

The crowd was fairly large for a MAC West opponent, and they were also fairly enthusiastic. Maybe word is getting out about how great this Zips team is to watch, and attendance will start moving up.

Concerning 'Cuse: We did very well. Considering Syracuse often runs a zone defense themselves, and we don't, they're obviously more familiar with how to face a zone than we are. It wasn't pretty at times, but we won by 30!

Concerning attendance: I have our church's youth basketball league literally all day (8 a.m. - 6 p.m.) so I don't often get to make the Saturday games (Trevor Weigand, Terry Weigand's son, plays in the league btw), but I got home about half an hour before the tip & was able to watch online. The crowd looked great on the computer! Sounded great too! Well done!!

It appeared to me that Harney did not want to play. Maybe attitude rather than maturity. He is very mature with his background. He just did not seem to care or want to play as a team member. Not sure what is wrong but I am sure KD will figure it out or he won't play. Too bad a gifted young man with so much potential. Those turn overs were"I really don't care"

You want to talk about immaturity. Harney just got T'd up while waiting for EMU to replace their starting PG who had just fouled out. Up by 18, but with EMU starting to get some momentum and Nick pulls that crap. Doubt we will see him again tonight. Time to grow up guys.

I can sum up this game rather quickly.

1) It was obvious that our coaches did a fantastic job of working with our guys to attack EMUs zone. They actually play it quite well, and do a good job of extending it out to cover the 3 point line. But, we were just very good last night.

2) EMU is simply not good enough offensively to match a 77 point output.

Another Note:

I think their best offensive post player last night ended up being the Steve Sweich look-alike that came off the bench. He made our post defenders look silly on numerous occassions, and earned Zeke a chew-out from Coach D. I don't know how that happened. It doesn't show that he's been much of a factor in their offensive production all year. And that was probably the source of Keith's frustration.
