Porter to Portland?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a clue they can give to Zach or this other terribly confused individual?

I guess I need one, too, if Tom Wistrcill is in charge of selecting Caleb's replacement (assuming Caleb is leaving). Perhaps we'll get another one of Tom's buddies [from a past job]. We all know how great they do as head coaches.

The next coach is walking into a very talented young team. My only concern is over whether the MAC will be able to send 2-3 teams to the tournament every year. The addition of West Virginia came at a bad time, especially with NIU's improvements.

Assuming the players stay. In soccer, a player can transfer once between D-I schools and not have to sit out a year. Also, several of our sophomores are talented enough to sign GA deals or homegrown/GA deals.

I'm not sure how to link to individual tweets, but @travismclark of Top Drawer Soccer tweeted that he heard Porter was going to finish the season at Akron. I inquired about it a bit farther and he said he had it on good authority. Ian Tayek (@Bigchief_WZIP), former ROWDIES president who has a ton of connections with Zips athletics tweeted back at Travis Clark that he was correct. Fingers crossed that this is correct.

Reading this article, which was posted earlier in this thread, I believe they are correct.

Whoever is hired will replace John Spencer, who was fired July 9 after a year-and-a-half on the job. Interim coach and general manager Gavin Wilkinson said he will remain at the helm of the team for the remainder of the season and the new coach would be brought on officially in December.

Does anyone think this would hurt the team chemistry at all, knowing that their coach is about to take off at the end of the season? Would it be harder to play for him? Or maybe they would fight harder to win one more title for him. Any thoughts?

How can they announce a hiring when Porter won't sign the contract for several months? Or if he does sign it, how can the NCAA allow him to continue to coach us if he has overriding interest in promoting his professional club while in contact with our amateur players?

He's not an agent. He's not signing them up to sign MLS contracts. PDL coaches who are tied to MLS team (Sounders U23s, for example) have had contact with our players over this summer and past summers.

I would think it would hurt team chemistry, take their minds off business. It would be difficult for a player to buy-in to a team concept.

I think that will remain to be seen. Probably depends on the individual player a bit too. My guess would be that we'll come out flat this Friday at Creighton, but in a week or two this whole thing will blow over and the guys will just focus on the game. Of course, this is all assuming he stays for the remainder of the season.

My question is, why sign a 10-year contract if you're only going to leave after a few years?

Signed before the U23 experience and ensuing discussion with Klinsmann this past Spring. Caleb has never hidden the fact that he wants to be a part of the USMNT. That contract basically ensured that he wouldn't go to another university. I never expected it to keep him from pursuing a professional or USMNT deal.

I didn't know if anyone posted this yet.

Portland to widen field for 2013 season

So there he goes, I love the Timbers Army and Have watched almost every Portland home game the past 2 years on TV/MLS Live, but I was holding out hope he'd land in Columbus.

Portland is on track to get the third pick in the draft, would any Zips players go that high?

Caleb - we appreciate and enjoy your ...

- character

- values

- high standards and expectations

- ability to recruit with the best of them

- elegant, effective, and disciplined style of play

- positive results on the field, in the classroom, and beyond

- family embracing Akron and making it your home

We would like more of what we've grown accustomed to under your leadership. Who are the top 5 or so people YOU would consider if you had to replace yourself?

I don't think it's going to hurt the program that much. We were in the NCAA tournament 22 times before Caleb was hired. Caleb took us that last step we never could get to before.

Now is the time for Embick to be named his successor so he can start recruiting now (including returning Zips).

Time for a dose of soccer reality: Mental lapse for the team starting Friday at Creighton, the beginning of a 3 match losing streak. By the time we have our Fox TV match up against St John's , we will be at 1-3.

Wow, positive outlook there. The team is way too loaded with talent to let that happen... Maybe falter on Friday, but I doubt more than that.

I bet you could. And I would be very surprised if Tom W does anything other than launch a national search to get the best available soccer coach in the country to come here.

I would bet Proenza launches a national search via a committee...and tells The Guy the Hired Ianello and then Botched Paul Winters to stay as far away as possible.
