Game 5 - Miami (OH) at Akron

Agreed. I haven't been so emotionally charged for a sporting event since my son played football. That's been a couple of years ago.

I felt like a sports fan again. Alive.

A nice change from the quote "football" fed to us by UA and the Browns. All Cleveland sports, actually.

Funny you brought up the Browns. Since 1999 every fall I found myself looking forward to watching the Browns play on Sundays. Other than Infocsion's opener in '09 I really never looked forward to watching the Zips. That completely changed this year and the Zips are easily more fun to watch than the Browns. I may be ZipsNation's most negative poster, but I have never had more fun watching the Zips. I just wish we had some W's to show for it.

Some of you are going to rip my ass for this, but...

The offense needs to improve.

I'm going to come at this from a different angle.

There are times an offense needs to outscore the other team and look no further than WVU. That can mean more touchdowns than fieldgoals, making key plays on third and fourth downs, etc.

To me, the offense did everything it did Saturday to win except getting the ball with enough time on the clock to go on a scoring drive. TB rightly took the blame for that one. Other than that, 49 points is a lot of touchdowns and no FGs, which is an awesome use of scoring opportunities. However, they did not go on as many scoring drives (drives resulting in one score or another) as Miami did. Miami had nine scoring drives and Akron had seven. If Akron goes on one more scoring drive making one more TD, it is an OT game. All in all, Akron's offense did enough to win a normal game against a MAC school without an NFL prospect at QB...They fell short on Saturday.

The number of TDs we scored should make everyone happy. We actually have a kicker who can make extra points. We have had explosive offenses in years past, and they always fell short on key third downs and fourth downs. These teams also had poor defenses. Frequently, pooping their pants or not pooping their pants was the difference between winning the MAC East and second place. We have a team now that scores a lot of TDs and gets key first downs. We were 45% on third down last week (1 for 1 on fourth down but the number is too small to really matter)...that is a good number....good enough to win a lot of games in the MAC. The elimination of pants pooping alone can result in a win or two this season.

I can see the following equation winning a lot of games in the near future....near future meaning next year: Good offense + good coaching + improved defense + better players + unsoiled pants = WINS

One final note on the Miami game - a shout out to Broderick Alexander, whose blocking was responsible for a good chunk of Chisholm's 160 yards.

Alexander is an awesome Zip...gave up his redshirt with 5 games left in his freshman year to try and help the Zips win a couple games...missed a full season with a blown-out knee...has his 3rd head coach in 4 seasons...lost his short-yardage job to Conner Hundley...and still dutifully does whatever it takes to help the team with balls-to-the-wall aggressiveness.

Wish he could play CB. Keep up the good work BA2!

I did want to say something similar. I have not been a big Chisholm fan thus far. He still has a lot of work to do with footwork. But, he has obviously learned from this coaching staff. Particularly Saturday,he was making sharper cuts and running more north/south than sideline to sideline. He just appeared to be running harder at the line of scrimmage. Credit also to an offensive line that has shown that in this system they are performing much better than the pas tfew years.

Its no secret that the Offensive Line was thought to be the strongest segment for the team going into the season -- and they have proven to be just that. Those guys are as tough and hard working group as you'll find anywhere. They may not be the biggest, may not be the strongest -- but they've got the most heart and desire. I'll take that any day.

Way to go, O-Line!!!

The coach's show had a feature on Travis Switzer. Big props to TS67 for taking the center job by the horns, allowing the rest of the line to maximize its talent!

I think that's the best part about this team in general, people are buying in and are willing to do whatever is in the best intrest of the team. Look at all of the position changes. Cody Grice is doing a fine job. Presley, Caponi, Griggs are all good, we just need more depth.

The Zips got a mention in Gregg Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback column on ESPN.com.

This weekend, the New Orleans Saints gained 474 yards, the University of Tennessee gained 478 yards and scored 44 points, Virginia gained 625 yards, the Akron Zips gained 629 yards and scored 49 points, NC State gained 664 yards. And all lost, because in the era of Xbox Offense, they didn't score enough.

And even though it doesn't have anything to do with Miami, another mention in a national publication, this time in SI.com. The last one almost certainly doesn't happen without Terry Bowden and this one obviously doesn't occur without him.

Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0)

This week's matchup with Nebraska is probably the toughest game left on Ohio State's schedule. If the Buckeyes win, it may be time for all their beat writers to drive to Akron to ask Zips coach Terry Bowden about his 1993 Auburn team. Don't remember those Tigers? Facing NCAA sanctions thanks to the previous regime, Auburn went undefeated and couldn't play for anything at the end of the season.

......and then won the next 9 straight the following year!
