Buckzip
We need a win to get some confidence and get on a roll. Close loss or not, it's still a loss.

I agree we need to win and get on a roll. A loss is still a loss, but it was entertaining. I certainly never considered leaving early even though I didn't have time to eat before meeting up with the Mens Soccer team on Vine Street. Captain Kangaroo
Win #2 in 2012 is a "Must Win." Where #2 comes from, or when, is almost irrelevant. The Zips need to have an improved record in comparison to the past 2 seasons. Improvements in the other stats, regardless of the magnitude, pale in comparison to a W-L improvement. Agreed, but those offensive numbers sure are purdy.
JimmytheZip
I think the players need this win to keep them beleiving. Its hard to keep beleiving when you are not winning. A win this week will be the first in a streak. It will be fun to watch, that I know.
K92
I think this game is probably being looked at as a must-win by BG fans. They have beaten their FCS opponent and Idaho while getting smacked by a down VT and they lost to hated Toledo. This loss to Akron will turn up the heat on Clawson. NewZipsFan
No one has brought this point up (that I have seen) yet.... This game will pit the "left-footed kicking Stein brothers" against each other. Robert's older brother, is a 5th year senior at BG - and has started most of their games this season. Clearly, our Stein has had the much better season - especially as of the last couple of games - with Robert being named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after his 4-4 performance at Tennessee. I believe their younger brother is also a left-footed kicker for their high school... For the Stein family's sake -- I certainly hope we only see PATs and not FG attempts! I couldn't imagine how much anxiety they must feel..
GP1
Much like last week, BG opens up as a bigger favorite but the line is now down to 4 points. Never bet against the home dog. BGSU is averaging 12.5 points per game against D-1A teams this year. The Zips are averaging 31.75 points per game against D-1A teams in 2012. I think the Zips continue to score points and BGSU's offensive woes against D-1A teams continues. If the Zips can put up 26 points against Tennessee, they can score 35 against BG. I don't see BG keeping up. People shouldn't be looking at this as a "must win" as much as they should look at it as a "should win" game. Have some confidence guys. We should win this game. Never bet against a home dog, except when it’s Miami at Akron on September 29, 2012 All kidding aside, BG’s #38 ranked defense (on paper) is miles ahead of Miami’s. But as you point out, their struggles have been on offense. I’m not sure if they’ve suffered some injuries on that side of the ball, but I thought they looked decent on offense against Florida. Over his career Schilz, while no NFL prospect like Dysert, has been a respectable MAC QB. He clearly is not a threat to run the ball, so that should help. It will be very interesting to see which of the two units (BG offense or UA defense) that have been struggling will be able to make a few plays in the game. I highlighted the phrase above for a reason. Because, "when" it happens IS relevant since it could impact attention, attendance, and recruiting much sooner if a turnaround is percieved to possibly be taking place sooner rather than later. Spin
I would have thought Akron should beat BG easily, they were really off. But that tune-up last might have gotten them back on track. Should be a heck of a game. I wish our secondary could grow a couple of inches this week...
K92
Will Justin March be back this week? Anyone know the status of Albert Presley? We really need those two on the field.
johnnyzip84
Will Justin March be back this week? Anyone know the status of Albert Presley? We really need those two on the field. Due to the Indians game (I think) the Coaches show didn’t air on STO until today at 4:00 am. I taped it and watched it before coming into work, but there was no update on injuries from what I can recall. Regarding the show itself, I will say this once again. They really need to help Coach Bowden out with some editing. He’s doing the best he can when discussing the background of the previous staff’s players, so I expect a few gaffes now and then (this week’s was Dillard being a transfer from Penn St) when speaking off-the-cuff. But just a little editing would clear up these things on a pre-recorded broadcast.
johnnyzip84
USA Today has March as questionable for Saturday with no information on Presley.
Captain Kangaroo
I wish our secondary could grow a couple of inches this week... Commack is 6' 4", and he was as bad as any Zips DB last week. They all played like they had 2 left feet. Unlike the past few years, I can't really point to size as a primary problem with our DBs. Depth is a big problem.

You start to wait for something bad to happen instead of making something good happen. The Defense better step it up this week!
johnnyzip84
GT article summarizing Coach Bowden's weekly press conference Presley practiced Tuesday It seems like Coach Bowden admits he was thinking about letting Miami score earlier to get more time for the offense: “I wasted 25 seconds of clock management not knowing what to do — even to the point of [asking] does this look unsportsmanlike,” Bowden said. The old school people cringe at these tactics, but this is the reality of college football in 2012.
K92
Great to hear that "The King" practiced yesterday. Now if we could just get Justin March back on the field. Also, since we're talking defense, does anyone know how #55 is progressing? He played a little bit on 3rd downs earlier in the year, then pretty much disappeared. You have to love Coach Bowden's candor. He is a refreshing change from the coachspeak usually heard in interviews.
Captain Kangaroo
In college football, it wasn’t unheard of for coaches to defer their decision if they won the opening coin toss; now most teams are looking to set the tone for the game. I know one cutting-edge coach who kicked-off to begin BOTH halves. Wonder how long it will take for the rest of college football to catch up to that renaissance man? Lee Adams
TB w/o being disparaging is saying the defense has to improve. He specifically mentioned people being out of position on that side of the ball. He also seemed to say that he doesn't really insert himself on the D side. BGSU is going to be tougher defensively than Miami. They are probably more well rounded on offensive which doesn't bode well for the Zips D. Don't expect 40-50 points from the offense this week. BGSU has some All-MAC caliber players on the D side. They have a high caliber QB.The D HAS to be able to stop BGSU if the Zips want to have a chance in this one.
