ZippyRulz Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 Cinci-Lville-USF-UCF-Temple-Memphis still forms a pretty good BE core, along with the western teams they're bringing in. I don't think they would have any trouble swiping a couple more from the MAC/Sunbelt if they want to. Quote
LZIp Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 Cant believe you included Memphis in the "pretty solid core". I think we could ultimately see the end of the Big East as a football conference with the BCS basically making them a mid-major now. Why would a MAC team leave now when we have the same opportunity as them? Quote

Zipmeister Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Somebody at MAC headquarters is missing the boat big time. $200 mill is a drop in the bucket compared to what we could rake in if we add The London School of Economics and Le Cordon Bleu Paris Culinary Arts School. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Stewart Mandel @slmandel .@SIPeteThamel reports that Maryland, Rutgers additions could net Big Ten $200 million in cable subscription fees. And isn't that what amateur sports are all about? Quote
GP1 Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 And isn't that what amateur sports are all about? Did you see 60 Minutes last night? 60 Minutes missed the point. It isn't about money in university athletics. It's about the ass bags that run athletic departments (ADs and President) and their putting money before anything else they do. BTW, there was a familiar ass bag who gave an answer that reinforced it is all really about money and not developing young people. When playing LSU is all about an advertisement and not developing teams, it is all about money. Terrible answer... There was a particularly sickening display of self promotion that went along with it as well. He hit the twofer. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 I didn't see that 60 Minutes feature. But the way you just described it sounds a lot like the way I see the situation. Quote
GP1 Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 I didn't see that 60 Minutes feature. But the way you just described it sounds a lot like the way I see the situation. The situation has gotten so bad, the ADs at the "big schools" don't even pretend anymore that it is about something other than money. They are absolutely deplorable people who exploit young men between the ages of 18 and 23 for their financial gain. Sickening... We all know how to boil a frog. You can't throw it in boiling water or it jumps out. You put it in cool water and gradually bring up the heat until it is dead. It's a killing process, not a building process. Once dead, it can't come back to life. That's what Presidents, with the help of their willing accomplices, the ADs, have done to college athletics. For years, they have been gradually building stadiums, coaches salaries, let's not forget ADs salaries, etc. to the point it would collapse under its own weight if they stopped pouring money into it. It's a huge monster that has to be fed and they feed it at the expense of everything else at the universities. When 60 Minutes shows up at your door, slam the door shut and don't say anything. Few stories make the people in them look good. Last night was a disgusting display of what really goes on in college athletics. It had all the elements of what is wrong. Michigan taking out a $200 million bond to finance stadium renovations. Small school going to big school to lose game and collect $500,000 while AD defends it as advertisement for the school. My guess is the idiot AD at the small school thought he could outsmart the people at 60 Minutes and make himself and his school look good...he looked like a used car salesman instead. It had a section where a star QB at a BCS school basically admitted on camera football is his full time job. It interviewed the AD at Michigan and his basic attitude was, "Screw everyone if they don't like what is going on because we are going to do what we want to do and there is nothing you can do to stop us". 60 Minutes was not good for college athletics last night and rightfully so...college athletics doesn't look very good these days. Zips Win! Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 The medium ten now teetering on the brink of being called the small ten. Two more football juggernaut's that ol Urb will have to navigate through... Are you freaking kidding me!!! Quote
GP1 Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 I was thinking this weekend about what the Big Ten Championship trophy should look like and I had a fitting revelation after watching parts of the OSU vs. WI game...Oh, how excited the fans must have been when WI's coach punted from OSU's 30 yard line...he should have been fired at halftime. The Big Ten is a punters paradise (ESPN could hire Coolio to make a song to that effect). I stray, sorry....I think they should adopt a traveling trophy like the Wagon Wheel as their championship trophy. It would be a sculpture of an overweight mid west couple sitting on a sofa staring at a freshly painted wall. Each year, the wall could be repainted in the team colors of the championship winner and they could use a high gloss paint to retain the illusion of it being wet year around. Seems to be the most fitting trophy that would embody the fans and the quality of product on the field. That league is absolutely horrible. Quote

Dave in Green Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Watch 13 minute piece online here. Mike Waddell interviewed. Thanks for the link. It was about what I expected, similar to a lot of the things I've read and that have been discussed right here on ZN.o. I can't help but wonder how far ahead this country would be if the same emphasis was put on the things that really matter in life rather than just the entertainment of sports. While I enjoy sports as a pastime, it doesn't dominate my life the way it does for some people. Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 20, 2012 Report Posted November 20, 2012 Talk about insanity, with the Big East continuing to crumble as the Rutgers rumors grow, new members are having second thoughts: Boise State, San Diego State and BYU have had conversations with Mountain West membership about the possibility of returning to the league, sources told ESPN.
