Tracking Zips Class of 2013 Senior HS Seasons

Recommended Posts

Someone suggested pulling the links below out of the middle of another thread and starting a new thread here in Basketball Recruiting to make it easier to track the senior season HS accomplishments of the Zips' four 2013 signees. The links below go to the team/player stats sections in the hometown newspapers of the high schools where each of the recruits is playing. If anyone finds better stat tracking links, let me know and I'll update this first post. We can also keep track of news and feature stories about the recruits in this thread.

Isaiah Johnson (Walnut Hills HS)

Kwan Cheatham (Winton Woods HS)

Aaron Jackson (Gahana Lincoln HS)

B.J. Gladden (Olympic HS)

Note: The B.J. Gladden link initially takes you to the Olympic HS girls basketball stats, and then you have to click on the BBB tab for boys basketball.

Very nice work, Dave. A lot of people will enjoy tracking these guys.

Rick Bolus today released his latest HS player updates, and his January rankings show that all three of the Zips' Ohio recruits have moved up. In the preseason October edition, Isaiah Johnson, Kwan Cheatham and Aaron Jackson were all ranked among the second best 25 HS players in Ohio. In the January midseason edition, all three have moved into the top 25 based on their performances to date. Jackson is now ranked #14, Cheatham #16 and Johnson #19. Judging by previous years, the next Bolus rankings will come out in April after the HS basketball season ends, and the Zips commits could move up even higher.

Isaiah Johnson is now the leading scorer (17.4 PPG, 69.1 FG%) and rebounder (8.9 RPG) on his Walnut Hills team, which is ranked #23 nationally by MaxPreps. Here's how a BasketballElite scout describes Isaiah's game:

Isaiah Johnson (C, 6’9, 2013): His big body provides brick wall defense. Johnson works hard defensively in the paint, laterally sliding his feet and positioning his body for denial of post-feeds. He is excellent at boxing-out and putting himself in position for rebounds. He walls-up defenders without leaning over or fouling them. Offensively, he keeps a low stance and settles for smart, high percentage shots. Loves his right-handed sweep hook and works toward the midline of the paint. One downside to his game is a low elevation from his jump. Johnson has committed to Akron.

His "low elevation" may be due to his high playing weight of 280 pounds. But he's looking more and more like a solid backup at center behind Forsythe next season. Finally, here's a link to a photo of Isaiah hanging on the rim waiting for traffic to clear from underneath him.

A little news starting to come out on Jackson, but no details. Apparently he was suspended again for multiple games:

Senior guard Aaron Jackson, a University of Akron recruit, was suspended for wins over Reynoldsburg (65-43 on Jan. 30), Lancaster (64-50 on Feb. 1) and Canal Winchester (65-56 on Feb. 2) and wasn't expected to play Feb. 5.

His status, according to coach Tony Staib, is uncertain for the Lions' game Friday, Feb. 8, against visiting Pickerington North.

Jackson also missed four games earlier this season for disciplinary reasons.

Getting a very uneasy feeling about this Jackson kid. Repeated disciplinary problems like this are rarely ever a good thing. I wonder if this has anything to do with the late recruitment of Nyles Evans. KD hedging his bets that Jackson even makes it to campus perhaps? Just speculating here.

After checking with multiple sources, it appears that nothing has really changed with Jackson. The suspension is reportedly part of the original disciplinary action, and should be over in the next game or two. His HS coach is a strong disciplinarian, and he would probably not have been suspended for so many games at many other schools. Jackson comes from a strong family background, has no history of troublemaking and is considered to be a good citizen worthy of wearing a Zips uniform.

This isn't breaking news, but I thought I'd post that MaxPreps.com has Cincinnati Walnut Hills (which Isaiah Johnson leads in scoring & rebounds) ranked #22 in the country (#1 in Ohio).

Interesting tidbit: MaxPreps ranks Columbus Northland #25 in the nation & #2 in Ohio. Since the 2006-07 season, Columbus Northland is 163-8!

Isaiah Johnson's Cincinnati Walnut Hills HS finished its regular season last night with their 21st win. Their only loss of the season was by 7 points to Huntington (WV) Prep, the #1 HS team in the country with the #1 ranked HS player in the country, Andrew Wiggins. Over the last 3 games of the season, Johnson hit 20-27 from the field, raising his final regular season FG percentage to 70.4%. Johnson leads his team in scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg). He's playing at a high level for a high level HS team. Next up is the Ohio HS tournament.

B.J. Gladden's Charlotte Olympic HS also finished its regular season last night with a win, going undefeated at 22-0. Olympic is a well-balanced team with all 5 starters averaging double-digit scoring. Gladden is the team's 2nd leading scorer (13 ppg) and leading rebounder (6.8 rpg). Olympic is ranked #2 in North Carolina going into their state tournament. Like Johnson, Gladden is playing at a high level for a high level HS team.

Kwan Cheatham's Cincinnati Winton Woods HS (13-9) and Aaron Jackson's Gahanna Lincoln HS (15-6 with 1 regular season game left) have not performed at the same consistently high level as the 2 HS teams above. Lincoln lost a number of games while players were suspended, and Winton Woods appears to be a good but not great team. Cheatham finished the regular season as the 3rd leading scorer on his team (11.3 ppg), but was the leading rebounder (8.9 rpg) and shot blocker (2.7 bpg). I can't find any summary of Jackson's season stats.

One thing about Kwan Cheatham is that he has a huge upside as he is young for his class. Though Kwan is a senior, he just recently turned 17. So he'll still be 17 when he steps on campus next year. Kwan's probably a good candidate for a redshirt. Let him eat and lift next year & just fill out his 6'9" frame.

one would think if he is only 17. there is a good chance he might grow another inch or two.it would be nice to have him come in at 6-10,6-11.i don't know about the kid from charlotte ,but they have him at three stars.we really miss Q

ability to drive to the basket.does anybody know what type of player he is.

B.J. Gladden Q&A About Akron Commitment

Small Forward from Olympic High School B.J. Gladden commited to the University of Akron yesterday. Gladden is a very strong kid who can get to the basket pretty easily because of his body. Gladden also happens to have a pretty solid perimeter game. Gladden is a huge pick up for the Zips. He has the potential to do very big things from this team. B.J. had offers from the likes of Wake Forest and Xavier but decided to go with the school that may just be the most suitable for him.

6’'6 2013 PF BJ Gladden- Olympic HS- Charlotte, NC

Gladden is a strong and physically gifted player that is excellent finishing at the rim. He has excellent body control and has the unique ability to use either hand efficiently and effectively. We project Gladden more as an undersized PF.

Aaron Jackson honorable mention in Centrally district, which must be stocked.

AJ hasn't really had a memorable senior season. When he's played he's been good but he's been suspended for a number of games.

However, he's a long & athletic 6'7" (built much like Jimmy Conyers, only taller) so I'm sure KD & Co. will be able to use him once he matures a bit.
