Lee Adams
Count me as someone who would like to see the rubber bowl renovated rather than crumble into dust. A lot of fun memories there and I'd like to see it live on if only for sentimental reasons. Best of luck to these current owners with grand dreams.About 30 years too late. Structurally salvageable in the '80's. Way past that now. I miss it. Watching games there since high school in the mid-'60s. Thats when the program was a 'winner'. Dave in Green
Its really not that complicated if you have a basic understanding of the system (the problem is most people don't). The taxes are still getting paid somewhere along the line. How's this for a simple explanation?
skip-zip
You got it, Dave. They are a Trade Organization. I mentioned this back in Post #
LZIp
How's this for a simple explanation? The majority of the income is going to the teams that make up the league, who then pay taxes on it. Rodger Goodell pays taxes on his hefty salary. The NFL donates some income to charitable orgs and has legitimate expenses that have to deal with the development/safety of the game. What's the problem again?
Dave in Green
The problem is that the NFL League Office never legitimately qualified as a tax-exempt non-profit organization. A legitimate trade organization must “further the industry or profession it represents" to qualify as a tax-exempt non-profit. The NFL League Office competes against other professional football organizations (ask anyone who worked for the USFL, XFL, etc.) and not for the benefit of professional football in general. Each of the 32 NFL teams "donates" more than $1 million apiece every year just to pay the NFL League Office CEO's $40+ million salary with a primary purpose of keeping the NFL brand from being challenged by other professional football organizations. This inequity represents one of the few things that citizens of widely varying political beliefs (conservative, liberal, libertarian, tea party) can agree on. The NFL was smart to give up this political favor before it was rightly taken away from them. It was a point of resentment with the general public, whether or not they understood the technicality that it was just the league office and not the whole NFL.
LZIp
The NFL League Office competes against other professional football organizations (ask anyone who worked for the USFL, XFL, etc.) and not for the benefit of professional football in general. That's where we are going to have to agree to disagree. If they shouldn't have been a tax-exempt org, how has it not been revoked in the decades it's been in existence? The whole debate doesn't matter, anyways. The NFL still won't be paying taxes. The teams and Rodger Goodell still will just like they are now. It's purely a PR move for people who don't understand taxes and want something to complain about.
Dave in Green
... If they shouldn't have been a tax-exempt org, how has it not been revoked in the decades it's been in existence? ...As the story I linked to earlier explained, the NFL's continuing tax-exempt status was based on political interests. For example, in 1966 Louisiana Senator and Chairman of the Finance Committee Russell Long received a promise from the NFL to have a team added in his state (New Orleans Saints) in return for Long rewriting Statute 501©(6) to read:IRC 501©(6) provides for exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade, and professional football leagues (whether or not administering a pension fund for football players), which are not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. The only one that aren't are because they choose not to be (maybe with exception to the NBA, I haven't read enough on it). Also, the NFL has been tax exempt since 1942. People are making mole hills into mountains because they either don't know, or want something to complain about. All taxes are getting paid. It really doesn't matter."The fact is that the business of the NFL has never been tax-exempt," Goodell wrote. "Every dollar of income generated through television rights fees, licensing agreements, sponsorships, ticket sales, and other means is earned by the 32 clubs and is taxable there."http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12780874/nfl-league-office-gives-tax-exempt-status
Dave in Green
Yes, I'm aware that most major sports leagues aside from the NBA and MLB enjoy some degree of tax-exempt status and that the NFL has benefited from it since 1942. Professional sports that generate billions of dollars were not what lawmakers had in mind when tax-exempt status was first proposed for non-profit organizations. But thanks for sharing the Roger Goodell quote. Anyone who makes $40+ million a year running a non-profit tax-exempt organization is obviously worth listening to. skip-zip
Listen Folks. I turned on the news at 5:30 this morning, and they had a REPORTER standing outside the Rubber Bowl doing this story. They kept going back to them several times. I couldn't believe it !!According to this report this morning:No Electric - They will use GeneratorsNo Water - They will have portable washing stationsNo Bathroom Access - Portable bathrooms, of course. You can't allow public access to ANY business without a certified occupancy permit, for safety reasons, of course. I can't see any way that this will actually happen. But, then I read that they say that they can't really stop it?Can't use any City Owned parking? That pretty much eliminates any parking near the facility. I feel sorry for all of the people living in those nearby neighborhoods. This is likely to be a disaster. This just gets more bizarre by the day.
Balsy
But according to that report, this was put together by a 19 year old promotions person. And he said he'll move it if he has to. Sounds like a publicity stunt to me.
skip-zip
Read the description of the event in the Link that Dave provides in his post. It looks like it was written by an elementary school student. This is just hilarious. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near that part of town. Dave in Green
Governor Kasich is encouraging more entrepreneurship at Ohio universities. I give these students credit for trying to organize a fun event, even though they appear to lack the resources or experience to produce a polished one. Actually the SariniaLilli.com site is pretty well done. Reading a little deeper into that site you learn that Sarina and her sister are working hard to overcome family difficulties:Sisters, Shay and Sarina, are the creators and co-founders of MAIA. Both their mother and older sister have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, leaving much of the household responsibilities to them. Not many people understand the burdens of living with MS, and even fewer are aware of the disease.By purchasing a MAIA Bracelet, you are supporting this family, as well as many other families caring for relatives with MS.To learn more about Multiple Sclerosis, please visit www.nationalmssociety.org. skip-zip
Hilarious. I'll tell you what. There's plenty of people getting publicity for nothing. I've often wondered all along if this is just a big publicity stunt.I love how the article quotes the owner of the facility, indicating that they might be ready to operate next spring or summer. And the saga continues.
