OU vs. Belmont

Belmont making OU look bad on national TV and I love it. Did not understand some of Groce's lineups sometimes. At times, the only guy he had out there able to do anything at all with the ball was Cooper. No Kellog, Offut, or Keely.

1) No effect.

2) Nothing of real substance. Maybe the coaches will find something to exploit watching the game.

3) No effect

4) It hurts.

That lady screaming all game has been very annoying on TV

Bobcats looked terrible. Cooper chucking up shots from all over the place, and Baltic looked just as lost as he was against the Zips. Let's hope it carries over to Wednesday.

They also turned the ball over like crazy and played horrible defense.

That said OU is a much better home team than road team, so I doubt it will carry over. They also have a 19 game MAC home win streak going that I would love the Zips to break!

Effect of OU's loss ... the MAC (and Zips) lose credibility.

I'm no OU fan, but that beat down by Belmont is not good for the MAC or the Zips. I'll never understand how Zips fans can complain about conference strength/credibility and then be so happy about a loss like this.

OU runs hot and cold. They are really very unpredictable against the good teams. If their 3 point shooting is on they can run a team out of the gym early. If not they can look VERY bad (as they did last night).

For all of the good that Cooper does it has always been clear to me that he doesn't truly trust his supporting cast. You see it every time they get down a little early in a game. He goes into hero-ball mode taking LONG 3s early in the shot clock trying to get them back in the game. Occasionally it will work. More often he misses a few of them in a row, the opposing team comes back down and scores and the deficit increases. Part of the reason I would never want him on this team. You don't need guys with that kind of an ego.

Said it after our first game with them, but it deserves repeating here. Ivo Baltic is quite possibly the softest 6'9" (if you believe he is really 6'9") guy in college basketball. If I were an OU fan I would be absolutely embarrassed to watch him floating around the 3 point line and NEVER mixing it up underneath. You almost get the impression that they will be better next year without him. Addition by subtraction.

As for the questions at hand:

1) Major gut check time for OU. They haven't beaten any decent teams all year. This was one of their last chances to do it and the pissed all over themselves.

2) Very minimal impact on the Zips. A win by OU would have MAYBE helped our RPI by a position or two, but even that is debatable.

3) No impact at all. The MAC East is what it is. Akron, OU then a long drop off to Can't and Buffalo and another long drop off to Miami and BG.

4) It doesn't help, but OU wasn't going to be the team getting an at-large anyways.

1) A passionate dislike for the teams we play against is a good thing.

2) OU is not the cause of our strength of schedule problem.

It only hurts us insofar as when we play OU, their RPI and other numbers will be worse. As far as "hurting us" from an at-large standpoint, the selection committee isn't going to look at Akron hard enough to think "Well, they beat Ohio twice (hopefully), but Ohio got killed by Belmont so Akron is out."

What I do know is this: Hate him or not, DJ Cooper is NOT going to have two games in a row like that. Players of his caliber typically turn it around 180 in the game after. I say prepare and be ready.

The only thing that matters to me about this game is how it affects the Zips remote chance at an NCAA at large bid. That would have required a perfect storm of events, and two of those events were the Kitties beating Belmont on the road and the Zips beating the Kitties in Athens. A Zips win in Athens now loses value to the NCAA selection committee thanks to the Kitties stinking up the place at Belmont. This loss by the Kitties and some other results with bubble teams has convinced me to give up whatever small hope there may have been for an at large bid. It's W2@Q or nothing.

OU isn't very good. A piece of crap Western Michigan team will likely win 20 games this season due to the MAC's overally criminally-horiffic D1 basketball "talent."

Much like Akron, OU's gaudy conference record is inflated by their tomato can opponents. The difference is - Akron is actually a very good team. OU 2013 will be lucky to go 2-deep in the NIT.

Guard OU on the perimeter and they are toast.

Keeley can't beat Zeke+Forcythe+Tree by himself.

The road to the NCAA tourney couldn't be any easier for any team in the country. Beat the teams we should beat, and we dance. Simple as that.

I hate to get too cocky, but I am tending towards agreeing with you on this Cap'n. My disdain for how bad the MAC is this year is well documented, but watching our game against NDSU on Friday and then watching OU against Belmont last night I am starting to believe that OU may be fools gold as well. They still scare me in that they have that ability to go unconscious from the 3 point line and run you out of the gym, but they haven't shown a lot of that this year. Heck they haven't shown it at all against any type of quality competition. The stage is all set for a historic month of March for Akron.

I agree.

Sometimes a lot of old sayings go through my head. One I'm hearing right now is, "Birds of a feather flock together." Let's hope we aren't the same thing when the Bid Dance starts. The Zips are a very good college basketball team, but they still have some proving to do.
