K-Roo
March Madness 2013: Why the Ohio State Buckeyes would beat the Akron Zips in a potential matchup: Bill Livingston
Dave in Green
Actually, that article was pretty darned complimentary to the Zips all the way through, including the final score.
MaxZIP
Basically...Ohio State wins because they have been exposed to a Big 10 Schedule. Great article. Mine is shorter if that is his main point.
Blue & Gold
I liked the article. He thinks Columbus would win, but as was stated by others, pretty much just because they're used to the meat-grinder Big 10 schedule. Fair enough. I also appreciate that he added: I think the Zips might actually win a series against Ohio State more easily than a one-and-done NCAA format game. mivid12
Livingston typically writes garbage columns, this is par for the course.
zen
I don't understand the knee-jerk resentment about this article. Whether it's right or it's wrong, it's understandable. No one in the country outside of Akron (and perhaps some within Akron) is going to make OSU the underdogs to a MAC team. 19 straight wins and perfection against the MAC doesn't convince anyone that Akron belongs atop the B1G. It just convinces them that the MAC sux or at least that the Zips are better than the MAC. Zips job to represent themselves against champion caliber competition will come. Whether OSU is championship caliber is their own job to prove.
RootforRoo44
Don't know about the buckeyes being tough. They looked pretty darn soft in a few of those losses. I'll take my chances with Beast-Mode Tree, angry-Zeke, and the always gritty Brian Walsh.
mivid12
I don't understand the knee-jerk resentment about this article. From my perspective, my beagle knows more about akron basketball than said author. Even tho he throws akron a bone, he still worships at the altar of Columbus State. And they have a lot of people who they sell papers to that visit that very same alter who they would like to cater to in order to keep circulation and collect online hits. Kangaroo Craig
I think the Zips would win. They took the OSU team from Oklahoma to OT early in the season at a time when they were not clicking on all cylinders. OK State is a better team, in my opinion that OH State. The Buckeyes seem to not be playing their best basketball as the season comes to a close where as the Zips seem to be getting better with each game. I agree with Livingston that maybe our guys lack a little confidence because they have never won in the big dance, but the Zips have the talent to make a run much like Ohio did last year and maybe even a little bit further. Dr Z
I don't have to read the article to know that I like the fact that it was written. I like what it illustrates.
Captain Kangaroo
The Zips are being mentioned as a relative equal to Ohio State in basketball. Not when Ohio State is in a down year, but when they are a Top 20 team. If you throw a hissy-fit about such a column, then you simply stopped reading it once you saw "Ohio State." Yeah I thought it was fairly complementary, even though he predicted a loss. An article that says we have more skill than a good big ten team? Awesome. Word to the Doctor in the house! We have achieved an all time new level of success when C-bus townies feel the need to write an article that OSU would still win in a matchup b/w in state schools. Loving the attention.
skip-zip
Apparently, they didn't like the overwhelming response to their reader poll, which showed that the Zips would win the game.
zippy5
Apparently, they didn't like the overwhelming response to their reader poll, which showed that the Zips would win the game. I think they realized how many people would read their story on the hypothetical game when they saw the results. While I like the article, I kind of feel it's just for some shock value to get some hits. "THE AKRON ZIPS ARE MORE TALENTED THAN OSU?!" LosAngelesZipFan
I agree with Capt that a PD article that says Akron is more talented than an Ohio State team in a good year is, all things considered, pretty frickin cool. But, the article definitely carries the PD/Livvy bias towards Cowlumbus. I wish he would have given just a little bit of a hat tip to KD for building this program to a place and point that there is actually something interesting to discuss about a potential Akron-OSU match up. And that so much of the drive and impact of this team is coming back next year. And it's all being done with a fraction of the money and support a Big 10 team has access to. It would have been nice to have him say that Akron is in the midst of doing something special-- still need to get to the tourney and gets some wins to really "arrive", but all indications are that something incredible is happening...he didn't quite capture that, which would really have been the appropriate hometown angle. GoZips
The PD article reads like Livingston is hedging his bets. If you stand in the middle of the road ... splat .... hit by a truck. Livingston quite obviously did not attend the game down along the Hocking River. That was every bit as tough a venue as any tOSU has seen all season. I am not sure just why Livingston thinks (is that a word?) that the Buckeyes would win. He presented a lot of evidence to the contrary. As for the reader poll ... stuffing the ballot box only proves that Zips fans know how to clear their browser cache AND are good, loyal fans.
