MontrealExposloveZippy
Zips for life!! We got Tree, we got Zeke and our defense is stout as can be, so let's save the negative energy for another day-
odhgibo
Screwed? Or is it just a bad conference? Oregon is a very nice team. They should have been higher than a 12, and UCLA should have been lower than a 6 (taking into account the PG being out with a broken foot). Dukes-Pokes ought to be a great game. Districtballer
I was really hoping we'd draw OK State when I saw them pop up as a 5 seed. Ok forget this matchup for a second. Whoever wins this game has to play Michigan in AUBURN HILLS? I hate the NCAA selection committee.

Districtballer
ESPN is stupid. They probably figure without Abreu it's a bad matchup. They don't realize Akron has more experience against VCU than anyone in the tournament and is stacked with great athletes who can play at our pace. This is the 5th time in the last 6 years that we've played, and none of them have been actually scheduled by us. Crazy.

Z.I.P.
ESPN has completely counted us out and I LOVE IT. Be prepared for a SURPRISE NO RESPECT!!! That's what the guys gotta take on the court -- that attitude. AND...who says we can't create some HAVOC of our own? Go ahead, Keith make that Shaka guy take some of his own medicine! Pressure 90 feet!!!

LOL just go back to any of the threads we've had from the last 4 times we've played. There hasn't been enough time for much of a change in personnel. odhgibo
Coach KD was just on WHBC. He echoed a couple things mentioned elsewhere in this thread. (1) VCU will attempt to make life miserable for anyone handling/holding the ball, i.e., ball pressure to offset height disadvantage. (2) Akron needs to get the ball to the rim and then rebound like crazy. (Reminded me of hockey coaches that tell their teams to just get the puck on the net in the expectation that they'll be able to jam home a few rebounds.) Dave in Green
@DistrictBaller, we're you aware that Coach Smart participated in a video shown to the Zips on their bus trip up to Cleveland for the MAC tournament? In the video he told the Zips players that they could not only win the MAC tournament, but that they could win games in the NCAA tournament. Coach Dambrot joked about it tonight when he said that Coach Smart would probably like to take that statement back right now.
GoZips88
Not. Good. Neither was Can't and OU at the MAC tourney after what had just happened to our point guard situation. The coaches and players found a way to overcome that adversity and our next job is to do the same given the style of play VCU employs. This staff and team are special. It may or may not work out the way we hope on Thursday but I'm certain our Zips will give it their all. I like the draw and the challenge and absolutely love this edition of the Zips! originalrowdy
I tell you what, I am a little sick of the negativity on this thread. 1. We KNOW this team, have film on this team, and KD can make a great gameplan. 2. This game is in freakin' AH. We were thinking Philly or KC. So our fans will be there in throngs. 3. Say what you want about the greatness of VCU - they beat us BY ONE POINT even with all those TOs mentioned previously. 4. Adversity? I dunno, from what I remember we lost our starting PG, best 3-point shooter, and co-leader of the team one week ago. Yeah, we blasted OU by 19 in the MAC final. This team has noooooo idea how to overcome adversity. I was jumping up and down uncontrollably happy and ecstatic when we got the 12 seed v. VCU. We can win this game. Our defense is as staunch as theirs. They just have a cute "havoc" name for it. Oh well. BRING IT!!!! ZIPS RULE!!! I'M F'N JACKED.

Zipgrad01
This is pretty disappointing that so many people on here feel that we have no chance to win. How have so many people lost faith in this team already? I just listened to Zeke on STO and he sure as hell feels like we are going to win this game. I pray that Treadwell reads this thread. It should be just the trick to light a fire under his ass just like the T last night.

Because it's not like we're preparing for a Notre Dame or a Gonzaga that we rarely see or haven't played before. We're playing a team that we are very familiar with that not only the coaches should already know what we need to do, but the players should know as well. With the amount of newcomers for us personally, with Betancourt, Kretzer, McAdams, Forsythe, a more mature Treadwell, and others with role improvements, I feel that Shaka has more film to watch to prepare than KD does. If you look at what we lost last year, and what we gain in players this year, I like our chances. I'll admit, I had a plate of crow along with some bloody sauce the past couple days. I thought this would be too much distraction at the worst time of the year. I knew that Betancourt would have a tough task being a true freshman playing minimum minutes all year, and his only connection to home, is now gone, i just didn't think he would be able to handle it. I was wrong, and I'm proud of this team, and shouldn't of doubted them. As that being said, I'm not counting the Zips out in any matchup. I've learned my lesson. Here's a slogan that i've seen teams have before, and feel this is true to us this season. "Respect is EARNED, not GIVEN." Anyone who thinks we got screwed over by the NCAA committee needs to look at it this way. Instead of going out and blaming the selection committee, let's get behind this team and make a run!!!!!! We then would gain respect!!!!!!!! GO ZIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAT VCU!!!!!!!!
zen
Only one thing scares me more than the zips trying to handle the ball on the dribble down court against pressure, and that's the zips thinking that they can pass down court over opponents heads. If ball handling is not an option, I surely say that trying to go over oppoents is riskier and will cause more turnovers. Can we get Porter back to Akron for a few days to concoct a court variation on passing geometry and possession death by moving triangles? The Hip Zip
I thought about last years game some more and and actually Serb helped bring the ball up as well. It took the pressure off of our guards and he had decent ball skills.
