The PD's EA has a few observations.

"I really like the talent of our linebackers," Bowden said. "But they are young. But they are all led by Justin March [6-0, 226-pound junior]."

The Zips seem to have plenty of size at linebacker as well with 6-2, 225-pound redshirt freshman John Rachal also standing out.

"[Defensive coordinator Chuck Amato] really likes the way he is playing. He likes his size. He has good instincts and runs pretty good. We need a guy like that. We're real pleased with Rachal."

If we can get CJ Mizell in here come August, I REALLY like the prospects of a LB corps headed by the likes of March, Rachal, Brown, Mizell, Rossi, Turner, etc. Of course, the depth along the D-line will have to materialize as well for the whole defense to turn the corner.

With the development of LB John Rachal, if LB C.J. Mizell and DT Moses McCray make it to camp in the fall, we could/should have a truly stacked front 7.

DT's:

Nico Caponi

Cody Grice

Keontae Hollis

Lavonne Gauthney

James Price

Moses McCray

DE's:

Albert Presley

C.J. James

Alfonso Horner

Jason Stargel

LB's:

Justin March

Jatavis Brown

Jamel Turner

John Rachal

Jon Shelby

C.J. Mizell

Nick Rossi

Jamar Williams

It looks like TB has taken us from paper thin to serious depth in only one off season.

I really do want to get excited for this season. So much of what we have heard is positive. But, I can't help but remember the optimism surrounding last season and how that turned out. After all this is only spring practice and we're watching Zips vs. Zips. Just too tough to judge right now.

Your tag line says "We'll be better next year," so why are you pessimistic? Now is your time to shine. Next year is coming.

You are correct sir.

Not only are the Zips greatly improved, but my astrologer predicts that all of the Zips opponents will be worse than they were last season and also SEVERAL tragic bus accidents.

Good times are right around the corner.

Unquestionably, the defense dominated today. Here are a few additional observations:

1) After seemingly hurting his ankle again last Saturday, Pughsley sat out this scrimmage. The O-Line REALLY suffers without him. Cedric B (the big JUCO transfer) looks to be taking a while to adjust as he worked with the 2's mostly. I am officialy concerned about the depth of the O-Line. I think this played a big part in today's results. One bright spot: I predict Isaiah Williams will eventually be an effective O-Linemen.

2) The linebackers continue to impress, especially March, Brown and Rachal (althought March looked to have dinged a shoulder early on and did not return). There are at least 6 LBs who can be effective, and that doesn't include CJ Mizell who will hopefully join the team in August. The added bonus of having plenty of capable LBs is that the special teams coverage should also improve.

3) Pohl could not find a rhythm today, but I think the O-Line trouble caused much of this. I think it's safe to say spectators at the 2013 spring game will not see the offensive explosion they saw last year.

4) The running game also struggled.

5) Most of the receivers are back in action, except for Sconiers. But some of them (Davis, Williams) might not be cleared for contact yet. For some reason, Dillard splits time between the 1's and 2's. I wonder if he's in someone's doghouse?

6) Paul Skolmutch got most of the reps at long-snapper. Christian Allen also was giving it a go in drills. This position is still a work in progress.

7) Grice and Caponi are ready to play RIGHT NOW. Hopefully, Hollis and others will come aboard to keep them fresh in the fall. Joe Dunn said on the Big Time Sports show this week, (paraphrasing) don't be surprised if SEVEN or EIGHT newcomers join the team this summer and make significant contributions in 2013.

As far as the O-Line and depth, we have Stephen Ericksen coming in in the fall, who I think can contribute immediately. Ryan Kortokrax as well.

Kevin Mills should be back from injury as well, so these three can help with depth. But I wouldn't want to count on effective playing time out of any of them (2 of them true FR and the other 1 new to college football as well) just yet.

Ericksen was our highest-rated recruit on Scout.

I can't imagine the offense is much different than last year. It was our strong point and the fact that the defense seems to be outplaying them should be a positive. If anything it will force the offense to get better. The one thing that does worry me is the concerns about the O-line. It doesn't matter how good the rest of your offense/gameplan is, if they have no time nothing is going to happen.

GT's take on practice #10.

The offensive line remains a work in progress, Bowden said.

Jarrod Pughsley is out with an ankle sprain, and offensive linemen Micah Lio and Joe Petrides (who’d been injured) have to step up. Bowden said that there are numerous people on the offensive line who he wants to see get a lot of reps in the last days of spring practice leading up to next weekend’s game. The Zips will hold their annual Blue-Gold Spring Game at 1 p.m. Saturday at InfoCision Stadium.

“Above all, the most improvement and needed growth needs to be the offensive line,” he said.

Lots of mistakes in there. What an embarrassment. I saw somewhere where Pohl is a redshirt freshman...wow that would be cool!

Get out your parka and load some extra coal in the furnace...it's looking to get cool very soon. glace.gifHe is a redshirt Freshman.

He will be a redshirt Soph. next season.
