Dalton to Dallas

How 'bout them Cowboys! Love the signing! From one undrafted FA (Romo) to another....

Had the pleasure of meeting Dalton with JZ84 a few weeks back after a scrimmage. He said he is a "Zip for life'. Yesterday after the spring game had the chance to meet his dad. Thanked him as well. I noticed that his dad drove up in a pickup from Texas... Now I see why.

ZipsWin! and family are penciling in a trip to big D next fall after he makes the team. We will be looking the Williams' up once in town....

I'm really happy for Dalton but from a selfish standpoint I'll miss him helping out the Zip QBs this year. I'll be rooting for him to stick, that's for sure.

If things don't work out with Dallas, the CFL seems perfectly fitted to DW13's game. The longer and wider field plays right into his strength, which is getting the ball to a spot on the field on time an on target.

Like Zips Win! mentioned already, Dalton had no trouble displaying his appreciation towards the UA football program. I hope he has a long professional career and stops back in Akron every time he gets a chance.

Congrats, Dalton!

I'm very glad he got picked up. My only question is, was his success a result of talent or the system? Very often spread quarterbacks are able to put up big numbers due to the system. A good example would be Brandon Weeden. Put up big numbers at OkState but nothing in the NFL.

Good point. There's a lot of "system" QBs out there. I'm sure NFL scouts are well aware of that, and judge accordingly. That may be why a guy like Dalton can post HUGE numbers and still not get drafted. But, I'm glad he's at least going to get a chance at a camp. He's a really nice kid.

Louis Mackey?

I don't believe so. The Zip I am thinking about made it to the final cut. He isn't someone you would think about when you think of one of the Zips all time greats, but he was a very important player. I'm just going to say it because I'm starting to think I am wrong...Zac Derr.?.?

Zac is the last Zip I remember.

Hate to say it but Hines barely played here...I doubt he was going to make the Patriots. This may be a blessing in disguise for him.

Eh, you never know. He was behind a pretty good running back here. He made some nice plays when he did play.

The Patriots drafted an OSU player last year who was a walk-on and strictly a special teams player in college. He ended up making the team, was second on the team in special teams tackles, and even picked off a pass against Phili. The Pats scouting department is the best in the league, imo.

Quentin certainly has the physical tools. Im not sure how it could be a blessing in disguise that his dream may have just ended (not that im implying you meant any ill feelings, just dont see your point).

Willie Parker hardly played at North Carolina, but he had a pretty nice NFL career. It's an exception, but it's possible. Labrum surgery is no picnic. :(

I just checked out the Cowboys' roster. All I can say is...Why not Dalton? Unless I missed something, there are currently only 4 QBs on their team.

Tony Romo

Kyle Orton

Dalton Williams

Nick Stephens (From a school I've never heard of)

Dalton can throw the ball around and that is enough to at least be the #3 QB on that team. Because of insane NFL rules, teams only dress two QBs for most games. We may not see him on the sidelines in uniform next year, but there is no reason to believe he won't be on their roster next season as a scout team QB.

Williams needs to have a really good rookie camp and eliminate any thoughts the Cowboys may have of bringing in another QB.

Williams appears to have already beat out former big time HS recruit and USC quarterback (ended his career at Richmond), Aaron Corp.

Some research on Nick Stephens...

He was a 4 star recruit in HS and a former starter at Tennessee, who ended his career at Tarleton. Appears to have a little bit of history with Dallas as well, being that he tried out for them last year.

I agree, but man, we're talking about the Cowboys here.

But isn't this what the Cowboys like to do in recent years? Take a stab on a QB that no one is paying attention to. Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois (of all places). I think everyone can agree that Romo's play can be terrible sometimes, but he's done quite well as the starting QB from a college team no-one's ever heard of.

With the right coaching staff, maybe they can develop Dalton as well.

I think Dalton will develop well, but never be a starter in the NFL. However, I do think he can make a team and have a really great paying job for a couple of years before having to take life seriously.

The current economics of the NFL make it possible for a guy like Dalton who has a good, accurate arm and a good brain to go along with it to make a team as a low level/paid (in NFL standards) back up. I think he is in a really good spot right now and I hope he does well.

If Zeke doesn't get drafted, there will be a lot of similarities between him and Dalton. Two guys who work hard and have a good head. Zeke will need to do as good of a job of selecting a team to sign with as Dalton has. Just because one doesn't get drafted doesn't mean there isn't a spot for them in professional sports.
