mbalsinger
And I think we also need to look at last season compared to the two seasons before with Ianello. We were completely blown out in most games (including all conference matches); while with one year of Bowden, who had no time for recruting, little time for JUCO and other transfers, and one season to instill a new strategy; we weren't completely blown out in most games, infact we were in most games. Two of those games were 1 blown assginment or penalty away from the W, from what I remember; Miami and FSU. Akron played respectably against Toledo, Tennessee and Can't. Bowden said it last year: we've got to go from losing by a lot to losing by a little, then we go from losing by a little to winning by a little, and then hopefully you find yourself in a situation where your winning by a lot and competing for championships. If there's any coach who can do that at Akron; it's Bowden.
Blue & Gold
It is not hyperbole to say that Rob Ianello almost killed off Zips football. This.
Kangaroo Craig
McCray was caught up in a numbers game where FSU decided to go with youth. He wasn't substantially better than the youth, so FSU told him if he wanted to play, to move on. We will also be getting another FSU transfer (OL). And an OL from Wisconsin (with 2yrs immediate eligibility). And, potentially, a big OL from Pitt. CJ Mizell still has classwork to pass. Amato's #1 priority is to make sure he passes. 2 DL's from Colorado State are on their way. The Colorado QB is expected to give Pohl a run for his money. That's Awesome! Maybe this program is finally turning the corner.
akronzips71
I would ask, then, how a high school recruit would look upon a coach who might always decide to grab a blue-chipper for a year, thereby blocking your way to a starting position after having invested your time/sweat, etc. For example, if Pohl gets sidelined by the new QB from Colorado, how do you think prospective QB recruits would view that? It's no secret (I think) that I am an OU grad, though teach at Akron. A lot of Ohio fans were disappointed with the start of Solich's tenure, but he kept telling everyone he was building a total program that would feed on itself from year to year. I think he's done that based on the past four seasons. If I were in Buchtel Hall and the JAR, that would be my direction to Bowden. WRONG WRONG WRONG This is a team that has won three games in three years. The NUMBER ONE priority is to build a winning team and a winning tradition. Do that and recruiting will take care of itself. You can not get quality recruits to a team that fights hard to win one game a season. Win and they will come.

I think he's done that based on the past four seasons. If I were in Buchtel Hall and the JAR, that would be my direction to Bowden. Where to start? Are you suggesting that Solich has never used JUCO transfers or players from any pipeline other than HS seniors? I hope not. It's life in the MAC - program success is cyclical and when you're on the bottom you grab players from wherever you can. Throw in a depleted roster after the last "coach" and Bowden is doing what anyone would do. As far as prospective QB recruits (your example), that was answered this week. The mandate from the Akron administration has to be pretty simple - build a winner and start to fill up that stadium. As long as nothing illegal is going on, I doubt they care about one-year players. And while Solich has done very well at OU, I wouldn't say that's the team the Zips are chasing. The program is headed in a positive direction and Bowden is the primary reason. Yeah he might leave one day, but if he does it'll be because the program is in good shape. I'm ok with that.

ZachTheZip
McNamara and Orelus are confirmed? McNamara looks to be confirmed, via his LinkedIn page. (I found it odd that he even had one of those) Nothing on Orelus yet, but it is known that he graduated early and left the FSU football team in the spring. That makes him an obvious candidate. It would also make him immediately eligible.

ZachTheZip
Was told by a member of the defensive coaching staff ... "Freshman All-American Cory James" That sounds too good to be true. Man, do I hope you're right about that. Although I don't see any way he wouldn't have to sit out a year. I wonder what is up with CSU's defensive coaching staff. Is it a personality problem that's driving all their players to seek out their former position coach Todd Stroud, who now coaches Akron's Defensive Line? I agree that it sounds too good to be true and also with your assessment of his eligibility situation. No way he could play this year. I'm just passing along what I heard in appreciation for all of the excellent info you've provided ZN over the years.

ZachTheZip
It looks like the other CSU transfer will be Nordly Capi. He ran into some trouble two years ago and had to sit out last year. That should make him immediately eligible.

I would say a lot. Google searches on "Nordly Capi Akron" and "Nordly Capi transfer" seem to come up empty? No mention on his Twitter??? At the very least, I learned he is a Penguins hockey fan. I guess originally being from Florida seems to put him on someones radar.
