Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???

icon_post_target.pngby BGSU33 » Thu Feb 06, 2014 1:57 am

Well, we're now in jeapordy of entering a new decade since our last home win vs Akron as the Zips are going for their 10th consecutive win in Bowling Green. Yes, that's 10 consecutive home losses, not road losses, HOME losses - for BG to a fellow MAC school. And if that's not bad enough, BG's has also lost 16 of its last 17 games to Akron. No wonder why the game was picked up for TV, with that kind of success it saves some of the Zips fans from having to drive to "Jar Arena West." And some people actually wondered why Keith Dambrot was so supportive in his comments of Louis Orr last year. Are you kidding me??? If you had that kind of success against someone would you want to see him go??? Hell no!

Looking at the arena, I can say BGSU thought smaller in the design, I hope we live up to the think bigger with whatever we do...Stroh..oh no

The baseline on one side has a weird setup, like it's too wide. They have two sections that almost face the sideline seats, it's weird.

Seriously, what is it about the Zips and last-second long bank shots? Anyway, they left enough seconds on the clock for Q to answer. That second half was tough to watch. I'm suspicious that Coach Dambrot is getting ready to make more lineup changes.

I would start McAdams over Kretzer until Jake gets out of his slump.

I also think that we'll see one of the freshmen big men starting before the season is over.

What bothered me most about this game was BGSUs ability to drive to the basket. It reminded me of the Ken+ game in that way.

Just like the Ken+ game, we also blew a chance to create some real separation in the first half.

Forsythe. Oh boy. Looked lost defensively against some similar sized post players, who weren't really that talented....two missed shots and 4 fouls in 4 minutes. If we can't play him against size, and can't play him against athletic guys (like at Ken+), what can his role be on this team?

I've seen enough banked last-second hail mary shots against us to last a lifetime. It can STOP now. It's our turn.

If Keith's "we'll be in a lot of close games" comment proves true, we are all going to need Cardiologists before this season is over.

The one thing I have noticed is that when Tree gets the ball in the post with his back to the basket he usually has three players on him with one defensive player right under the basket. He has a difficult time getting the ball to an open player because the Akron players are not moving. One time big dog moved and got an easy basket when he moved as Tree was in the post. We should be able to get some easy looks if 3 players are watching Tree. Our spacing has to get better.

I noticed that Evens got a little more time. As the season has progressed I am not sure what KD saw in him. He does not seem to like contact or drive to the basket, is not a good shooter, and the offense also seems to start late when he is in the game. I am hoping that he improves but I like Bentacourt a great deal more than Evens right now.

I really hope you dont mean Big Dog. I have pretty much given up on him being a really good D1 basketball player. He is too big and WAY too slow. He labors just to move. It is tough to watch.

In that situation (when the ball is in the low post), people generally are not moving, unless they are cutting to the basket. The idea for the perimeter guys is to find an open spot. So, it's not odd that players are not moving in that situation. But, it agree that there should always be an open shot somewhere when 3 guys collapse on him.

I think the spacing issue we are having is when the ball is out top.

WOW! Not the same player I've been watching.

No Akron fan should be satisfied with this performance. We are barely playing well enough to beat bad and physically depreciated teams like BeeGee. HOWEVER -- at least the game was nationally televised on ESPN Full Court ONCE AGAIN (!) though I didn't know till this morning. This is the team's 11th national broadcast on ESPN this season!

@1981grad, the reason we saw more of Nyles tonight is because Melo picked up his 3rd foul with 16:10 left in the game and went to the bench. Nyles played nearly 9 straight minutes in his absence. When Melo left the game the Zips had a 7-point lead and when he returned with 07:21 remaining they had a 4-point lead. Hard to say if the Zips would have been in as much trouble late in the game if Melo had played more minutes in the second half. But he played 17 minutes in the first half when the Zips ran up their biggest lead of the game and just 9 minutes in the second half due to the foul problem. Melo had a decent game except for the 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in the last 30 seconds of the first half.

You can say a lot of things about the Zips right now. They turn the ball over too much. They run hot and cold shooting the ball. They get lazy on defense at times. But the one thing they will bring into the stretch run of the season and the conference tournament is a whole ton of experience closing out close games. They haven't won them all (see Can't), but they've figured out a way to win a lot of them.

Not sure if you're being serious...

It's especially tough watching Big Dog move from the POV of the guy between him and the basket when he starts that slow dribble move leading to the quick spin and bank shot while you try to stand your ground. Ask Cam Black after he ended up flat on his butt with no call from the ref.

We are considered a "tall" team but BG is in fact taller. We had a lot of trouble on the boards, especially offensive. While we did out rebound them, it was their rebounding and put backs that kept the game close.

Meanwhile Kwan is going to be a big star. 6'9" and he can shoot. Just wait until he grows out of his awkwardness.

If you look closely at the minutes played yesterday….Just kidding!

I love going to BG for hoops. Haven’t seen a loss on their campus in a decade! The only place that the ZipsWin! jinx does not apply....

Their gymnasium still blows. It has to be the worst designed “new” arena ever built. Glad to see 300 BG students showed up and 250 left at halftime.

Spacing- I couldn’t agree more. When my daughter was learning to drive, I reminded her daily that spacing on the road is the only place where it is more important than on a basketball court, so pay attention.

Yesterday, I thought the first half was a pretty good display of spacing. Reggie hitting threes, Q driving and making short jumpers, everyone else hustling.

As mentioned here, the second half was too much half court into Tree facing a triple team, hence the five turnovers...

If we can get the right mix of Q on the perimeter driving and Tree down low, I like our chances, three-point bank shots and all....

@akronzips71, BG's rotation is not taller than the Zips' rotation. It's just that BG's tallest players had more PT than the Zips' tallest players. Pat (6-11), Big Dog (6-9) and Kwan (6-9) played a combined 20 minutes compared to 74 minutes for Cam Black (6-10), Josh Gomez (6-10) and Richaun Holmes (6-8). So for much of the game Nick (6-8) or Tree (6-7) was the tallest Zip on the floor. Coach Dambrot has mentioned a couple of times now that he really wants to have a true center on the floor more of the time, but has been using more of a smaller lineup to generate more offense. The message seems to be that the Zips' bigs need to help generate more offense to get more PT.

DIG I totally agree. The problem is that when they were taller than us, we had a lot of trouble on the boards. Tree is great, but a 6-10 guy who can jump is going to get higher. And there bigs were way more athletic than ours (except for Kwan, who needs to learn to use his new body. Watch out for him next year).

We did a lot better job of moving without the ball in the first half. In the second half there was too much of Evans and Q standing at the top of the key dribbling and then Tree trying to go one on three to make something happen.
