GJGood
I don't usually complain much about referees or umpires because I feel that you can usually point to other things in the game that effected the result just as much, but in this game the umps have directly cost the Zips two to four runs and the score is now 3-2 instead of a three to five run lead in the biggest game the program has had in 18 years. It is quite frustrating.
mes102
We have had 9-10 baserunners left on base. We had bases loaded each of the first 3 innings even with our 3 runs. Each of those went double play, double play, strikeout/controversial left field catch....We have had our chances. No excuse that Buffalo is in this game with 4-5 errors. Spin
I'm not impressed. BTW, how are teams selected for the CWS? Does each conference get a bid, like in basketball? Or is it by rankings (popularity) like football?
bigzipguy
Yes , we have had our chances, but that changed the entire complexion of the game, it would definitely been 5-0, with the Zips still batting. Umps do the best they can , they missed the call.
bigzipguy
Isn't it ironic that the guy who scores the go ahead run, is the guy who "made a great catch"
mes102
Yeah, I agree with that. My point about umpires needing to wake up was the fact early on they weren't really paying attention. I remember one check swing was appealed to first base and the first base umpire wasn't paying attention. He was looking into center field. Then the bunt attempt that was hit by a pitch and the umpires first signaled it as a foul ball. And then that infamous "great catch"

Or is it by rankings (popularity) like football? For the NCAA tournament conference tourney champs get the auto bid, then there are also quite a few at-large bids like basketball. The format for the baseball big dance is a little different than basketball because of double elimination and it usually features more regional matchups to start things off. Of course when Akron won the MAC in 1996 they had to go to Lubbock, Texas to face the top ranked team in the nation in the USC Trojans in a game the Zips lost by a score of 20-10 then the Zips lost to regional host Texas Tech in the loser's bracket elimination game. It was extremely odd that Akron had to play the #1 team in the country and then also the host team in their only two games as usually the top seed in each region is also the host.As far as making the College World Series, to get to Omaha you have to be the survivor of your four team regional followed by being the winner of your best 2-of-3 format super-regional.

Spin
Did anyone else see the 2nd baseman pull his foot off the bag at least a second before he caught the ball?Oh well, extra innings. Wish this was on radio, want to get outside.

mes102
Unless Can't State has a colossal 9th inning collapse, It will be #4 Can't State vs #7 Akron in the MAC Championship with one game to decide it all. Noon start.
zippy5
No kidding. You know the MAC wants to make things as easy as possible for Can't, now that Ball State crapped the bed. Having Akron play twice today or get eliminated would accomplish that. The great anti Akron conspiracy has made its way to baseball? Darn

Zipmeister
close but no cigar. Excellent improvement from last season. We'll get em next year.
Spin
Agreed. I see a lot of progress over the mess Rick Rembielak inherited.
infofan
Great year for zips baseball, with all the distractions (weather, coaching suspension, etc). Was wondering what happened to our top recruit- Dom Iero from Hoover. Great PG and QB and he chose to play baseball for UA but haven't heard mention of him since really early in the year. Hilltopper
Iero got the third most playing time of all the Freshmen. Dom Iero | #15 | INF | Akron
skip-zip
I go to a few Zips baseball games each year. Just wanting to support them. But, this season provided some hope. And I didn't even realize that someone had started this thread until this morning. Lets be honest, a 28-28 record and a 7th place finish isn't going to matter much to very many people, but the late season MAC tournament run got some decent publicity. The news would have been HUGE if they had pulled out that win on Saturday. All of the Cleveland news stations have been covering Ken+'s trip to the college playoffs. I sure wish it was us. Maybe soon.
Spin
Is it wrong to hope we don't get much publicity, because if we do there will be no place to sit at the retention basin?
Staton14
Is it wrong to hope we don't get much publicity, because if we do there will be no place to sit at the retention basin? We need to play most (if not all) games at Canal Park.
