Look at the 2014 Schedule

My apologies, no offense was intended. My thoughts on Pitt could be way off but it seems to me that with a new QB and some pretty good RB that the Panthers will likely be a more run heavy offense in 2014, at least to the point where if you can stop or significantly slow down the Pitt running game you'd have an excellent chance at winning. The question is can the Zips hinder that running game? That will be a tall chore.

They also have the best WR we will face all season, and you can take that to the bank.

Pitt sophomores Tyler Boyd and James Conner were named to watch lists for the Maxwell and Hornung college football awards.

Boyd and Conner are leaders at their positions, but incoming freshmen Adonis Jennings at wide receiver and running backs Chris James and Qadree Ollison arrived with plenty of accolades behind them. “They all can contribute (this season),” Conner said. Boyd said he has been impressed by what Jennings has shown in informal workouts.“(He) came out just like me in high school, four-star, top-notch receiver. His ball skills are good, his hands are good, his routes are good. Everything is good.

Looking forward to this game! Eat them up, eat them up....

Me too. I'm feeling strangely confident about the Zips performance in this game. Sort of the same feeling I had about the NC State game years ago now.

I know everyone doesn't agree with me...but this game is THE single most important game of the season (Penn State). We've had all this chatter about logos, recruiting, building a program...etc...etc...but unlike our big games from the past two years, this one will be on national television AND local television (ABC). OSU won't be playing until 8:00pm, so some of the day football watchers may tune in for the game.

We had a decent stand against Tennessee two seasons ago, almost beat Michigan last year (without a national audience). If we really want to get something to brand this new era of "Z"ips football around...we need to beat Penn State at Penn State. I absolutely believe this to be a winnable game, and I can't believe I'm saying that.

At least one PA writer thinks the Zips will definitely be in this game.

FWIW, Marshall was picked to win the C-USA East today.

Is anybody else really looking forward to ruining Marshall's season? I've never seen a more horrendously weak schedule. They're talking undefeated, and we would be too if that was our schedule. We're the toughest game they have, and we'll be coming off of a bye week.

Their schedule is as weak as I have ever seen, but I still think they will be hard to beat. A victory over the turd would be very sweet. I expect there to be a sea of green at the Info on 9/20 and it would be great to their fans back to West-By-God with an L. smileys-praying-622061.gif

I always wondered, can a game be called a "trap" game, if before the game you call it a "trap" game? Isn't a "trap" a surprise? I hate stupid clichés.

As I was reading the article, I forgot how much I liked Storm Johnson when I watched him last year. I missed him being drafted by the Jaguars. I'm guessing he was kind of a product of that offensive line, but I still admired his running. When I saw him run, I thought he would be a good compliment in most backfields in the NFL.

PS Here is what I still think of Marshall.

Could Pitt's offensive line be a weakness?

Pitt’s offensive line was not at that level last season. In fact, the unit wasn’t even close. The Panthers averaged just 125.7 yards per game on the ground in 2013. The figure Rowell was more concerned about, though, was 43, the number of sacks given up last season, sixth worst in Division I-A.

Trap game is sports slang. There's no formal definition for this term. The most widely accepted definition is that a trap game is one with a lesser opponent immediately before or after a much more important game (or games) against a much stronger opponent. The rationale is that a team will become so focused on preparing for the more important game(s) that it will not be prepared well enough to win against a lesser team that has focused all of its resources on scoring an upset.

A trap is defined as a situation in which people lie in wait to make a surprise attack. It's a lot easier for a lesser sports team to make a surprise attack on a stronger sports team when the stronger team focuses its attention on other stronger opponents and underestimates the potential for a lesser team to outplay them. Anyone can look at any team's schedule and predict trap games in advance. Yet there are still surprise upsets in predicted trap games.

I've always thought "trap game" was a term used for gambling. One of those things where a better team is heavily favored over a lesser team and it seems logical to take the better team. However, the lesser team matches up well against the better team and the better team wins, but doesn't cover the spread. It's the stuff that Las Vegas was built upon.

Here is the Huntington newspaper's early take on this game.

That's not even close!

Trap game is a new craze in Asia where local youths see who can be the last one to pull their head inside the door of a public transport vehicle before it automatically closes.

I'm looking forward to our Tuesday game in November with BG. I'm pretty sure it will be another trap game™.

Ellen gives a BG overview today, writing that they are looking for "respect."

Sound familiar?

(New BG head coach) Babers said don't be surprised if there are games where both teams eclipse 100 plays. He also said his defense will play the game at a high speed, forcing opposing offenses to operate just as quickly, getting them out of a comfort zone.

From DEJAN KOVACEVIC:

"Paul Chryst advised me before Pitt camp to keep an eye on Todd Thomas, and the coach needn’t have bothered. No. 8 has been impossible to miss. The senior linebacker out of Beaver Falls, once among Tom Lemming’s No. 68 prospect in the nation, has stepped up more than anyone on the South Side these past two weeks. And he’s done it with a snarl, too: On one 11-on-11 drill Thursday, he leveled — and I mean leveled — two blockers. And as those blockers were reeling on the ground, he let out a loud, primal scream. Good for Thomas, because the Panthers will need him to be a lot better than their fourth-leading tackler, as he was a year ago."
