Akron Zips Branding Survey

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's true or not, but someone said awhile back that the Zags of Gonzaga may be the only other college sports team in the country that has a nickname that starts with Z. That's only for basketball, and I don't think they've actually used Z on their uniforms. I think a big Z is a pretty unique and striking athletic symbol.

I would go with three Z's, each one a little bigger... ...oh wait Ianello is gone, never mind. In that case, we should add the b word to the end of Fear the Roo. Get Aaron Paul to record the audio. See how many students show up then. Know your demographics!

I really like the Z on the black and white basketball unis, but it just doesn't work as well on the sides of the helmets. I think for the Z logo to work it needs to be just 2 colors, so the Z looks like an outline.

That's because Gonzaga's sports teams are the Bulldogs not the Zags. I think the Zips do have the only Z in college sports (there are no Zebras). I like the Z.

The only other Z-word I can think of being used in association with college sports is the Arizona Wildcats being referred to as Zona. Xavier has made great use of being the only school with a name starting with X to become widely identified with the single letter X. With enough focus, UA could take ownership of the single letter Z in college sports with sports media and the public. It's really rare for anything to be identified with a single letter, and the Zips are well-positioned to do that. With Akron Zips spanning the alphabet from A to Z, there's no end to the marketing opportunities.

It turns out that there is one other school that uses a Z-word for their team nickname -- the Eastern New Mexico Zias. But it's only used for their women's teams (the men's teams are the Greyhounds), and ENMU is an NCAA D-II school that isn't really on the national radar. UA could own the Z identifier in college sports if they wanted to.

I like the helmet Z, but it needs to be postioned and drawn slightly differently for asthetics. Keep the Zipper stripe and shitcan the wording on it. Zippy can be marketed to our fans, but is a little troubling on our helmets. I've had to endure several 'is that a deer on your helmets comments over the years. My affable reply - not a deer, but a carnivourous kangaroo and that's where our battle cry 'eat em up eat em up go Zips go!' comes from. Best I could do. That and I usually accidently spill some beer on their shoes.

Gonzaga is offically known as the Bulldogs. Zags was just something started because so many were mispronouncing the school name.

@akZipper Exactly! I have a feeling they want to make a shift to the Z logo...but all three are good.

Fear The Roo is a good logo for banners, flags, t-shirts IMO. A-Roo as a primary, Z as a secondary.

I agree with this as well. I think the A-Roo should be the primary. Not only is it uniquely Akron but it is also the only one of the logos that incorporates two of the three major components (school name, nickname, and mascot)
