WMU GAME

We all knew the game was coming where free throws would sink the Zips, and this was it. Throw in the late, long, banked 3 just to add insult to injury.

No doubt. An average FT night, and the game was over.

And think about how many of those were front ends of 1 and 1, where we would have had even MORE attempts to score points.

It was a game you simply could NOT lose if you kept feeding the paint AND making the FTs. We didn't take care of the 2nd part.

I was sitting there in the first half with the Zips building a big lead and every Zips fan around me going wild, and I said out loud that I wasn't sure if I liked the idea of having such a big lead so early. I think this team is better at scratching and clawing their way back late than they are trying to protect a big lead. It's like the old football cliche about the prevent defense preventing you from winning. The Zips went from aggressive attacking on both offense and defense in the first half to a more tentative style in the second half, and WMU was more than happy to trade styles and become the aggressor. I don't know how much of that was due to the players and how much was due to the coaching. But the combination of coaching and players lost the winning formula in the second half. The Zips were not a great team this season. But they were good enough to beat WMU if they had played two halves of Zips basketball instead of just one. I'm disappointed, but already looking forward to next season.

excellent post DIG, very tenative play, bad foul shooting , too much one on one play down the stretch.

Speaking of one on one play, Tree absolutely needs to learn when to pass the ball out of the post. If he's going to force his way in, you have to be a good free throw shooter.

Additional Note: We've known all season that we are at our best offensively when Tree and Diggs and Harney make baskets. We got nothing from Harney, and Tree and Diggs had bad shooting nights. With 34 points at the half (thanks mostly to Deji) you should accidentally be able to hit enough shots in the 2nd half to win a low scoring game like that.
