Game #6 Miami (OH) Redhawks

Both UMass and Miami are playing 2014 like the Zips played in 2012 - throwing it plenty with a 5th year transfer, because they don't have the horses to do otherwise. Discipline in the secondary and a consistent pass rush will be a key.

Before getting involved in the match-up discussion, I thought it might be interesting to highlight how significant this game is for the UA program. A few of us were wondering when the Zips were most recently 3-2 in football. The answer is 2005, the year of the MAC Championship and Motor City Bowl of course. The Zips were also 3-2 in 2003, Lee Owen's last season as HC.

You might wonder when the last time the Zips were 4-2. The answer is 2000 under LO. That will always go down as the one that got away - a few key plays prevented the Zips from seeing unprecedented success that year.

Anyway, if the Zips can beat the Sweaters on Saturday, I won't be thinking about 2000 :) Go Zips!

Great comparison to the 2012 Zips, JZ. Both Miami and UMASS scare me despite their records. They have been competitive, just cant get the Ws. I'm almost certain it will be closer than the experts predict.

Akron better be ready to play.

This game scares the snot out of me.

Miami is bad and we all know that, but they will win a few games. The question is where. The Zips need to be on their A game to win this. (Not as bad as Ohio or Can't. That is another topic), but this game will set the pace to possibility run the table in the MAC!

All I ask is the offence does not do anything stupid(unless the opportunity presents itself to gamble) and the Defense plays like it has the last two weeks and not get tired.

Akron needs to get off to a faster start. QB needs to play better early and play calling needs to be better. If not, they could find themselves in a shoot out against a team with a QB who can throw the ball around decent enough to be dangerous.

Miami has averaged 31 points per game the last three weeks and their offense has improved. The bad news for them is their offense now has three games in a row on film. The good news for us is we have defensive coaches who know how to watch film and exploit teams. The Zips are a solid team and will continue to play well this week. However, I can see this game being closer than expected with Akron holding Miami to a lot of field goals and Akron getting one more TD than Miami with some scattered field goals.

I agree that Miami is a dangerous team for us to play, but I wouldn't consider their "win" a win. They won that game because of a poor decision by a quarterback. On 1st and goal with three seconds on the clock, the QB decided to throw the ball instead of spiking it. Spiking the ball at the six gives the fieldgoal team the opportunity to put points on the board to win the game. That game was "won" because UMass was that stupid.

That game was reminiscent of the Miami-Akron game a couple of years ago when Miami came to our house and beat us 56-49. Two of the worst teams in the MAC gunslingging it out, no defense. The comparison of Miami to the 2012 version of Akron is spot-on. However, Akron lost most of those games because it lacked depth and experience. We were able to put up points, but not able to hold onto leads.

I don't see Miami beating Akron, and I throughly see Akron in control of this game from the get-go. Zips fans will be sitting at the edge of their seats, waiting for that busted play to happen and for Miami to take the lead, (but it will never come). Score will look closer than the game actually is.

Kyle Pohl will not be replaced by Woodson in this game. Pohl will throw for 250+ yards, 2 TD.

Miami has averaged 31 points per game the last three weeks and their offense has improved.

"Minus quarterback scrambles by Pohl and Woodson, plus two short-yardage dives from nose guard Cody Grice, Akron only attempted five running plays in the first half last week."

Limit their possessions. Run the ball more than 5 times in the first half AJ.

I was out of town last weekend. I read through this thread when I returned. I can't believe nobody mentioned how Miami "won."

The RedHawks, who hadn't won a game since Oct. 27, 2012, battled back from a 41-14 deficit in the first half to squeeze by the Minutemen. The game ended in incredible fashion as well, as UMass made a very questionable decision. The Minutemen had the ball at the Miami 32 in the final seconds and completed a pass down to the six yard line. Instead of spiking the ball and attempting a field goal, the Minutemen decided to go for the touchdown, but Shadrach Abrokwah was tackled at the two-yard line as the clock expired.

Why even have a kicker on your team??? It was the coaches decision to go for the TD. I highly doubt it comes to this, but PLEASE remember this when we play them. Umass, Miami, Ken+, EMU...how can we not have a winning record this year? Can we replace one of those games with a Marshall redo?

Can't wait to see who wins the pillow fight in Portage county this weekend where Umass is a one point underdog to the mighty hippies.

We better pound these clowns.

You must not have read too closely, if you look up about four posts Balsy talked about it (and I had mentioned it an another thread).

I won't defend Whipple's decision, of course, but since he has previously lead UMass to a 1-AA championship, I'm sure he'll get a little slack on this. This is especially true since he obviously has made a difference in this program in such a short time. They probably blowout K.E.N.T. this Saturday.

Those that think this game will be close baffle me, I watched them on ESPN 3, and don't see a strength to their game. I know our O-line has issues, but Miami's line makes ours look like it was taken from the Pro Bowl. I expect to see us to have a lot of tackles for loss, whether it's the QB or RB's. If UMass can put up points that easily, so can we. It won't be close, they can't handle our pass rush. I am looking forward to the Hundley-Kern reunion as well.

Zips win big. 38-10

I think the Zips pass rush will be dominant as well. There is one thing I hope Coach Amato and company are working hard on this week (especially Okafor): hold your water, guys!! We can't keep letting offsides penalties ruin otherwise fantastic defensive play. Because Miami slings it so much I expect us to give up a few big plays, but it won't be enough for the Sweaters.
