What Can WE Do

Recommended Posts

Agreed skip. I think it starts with us alumni and our interactions with the community, other people and current students. To bring this thread BACK to it's purpose...WHAT CAN WE DO engage/encourage new fans of the Zips.

I really think the idea of gathering in different bars around town to watch games is a perfect opportunity to "interact" with the community. It would start sending a message to LOCAL people that we are out here, and that they could have a lot of fun going out publicly and enjoy a gathering of people watching a Zips game.

I'm rather surprised that only a few people have indicated that they might be interested in doing something like that.

I think it is a great idea. I nominate The Score (old Pints). They have quite a decent amount of Zips gear around the bar, run special deals on game day (as far as I know Zips and Cleveland pro teams, no OSU), and have done a nice job remodeling the place. Business doesn't seem great when I have been there, though. Hometown-ey establishments like that deserve support. I ate at a very hometown restaurant the other day called MVR. I'm sure some on here have eaten there before. Does Akron have a place like that? Not to my knowledge.

I've never been a fan of watch partys in the valley. Who the hell wants to drive to the valley? A lot more students/recent alums live downtown or near campus.

I've been to several watch parties in the valley, and have had fun. But, I agree that driving to the valley during the winter really blows!!

I wouldn't necessarily think an Exchange location is a bad idea, but it seems as if it might be rather predictable that Zips fans might be there. Although, that might also be our chance to reach the student population that we desperately need to make Akron games their first priority for college sports.

But...I think the optimal locations in Akron would be the renowned sports bars where lots of people go, but would likely never attract a crowd for Zips games.

I haven't been to any of the watch parties in the valley, and I like the valley, but if we really want to maximize the impact on locals, I think Old Pints (what's the name now?) is a great place to start. It's closer to campus too.

Agreed. I also like the valley, but I think we've really got to try and support downtown.

You are absolutely on the same page as me in regards to wanting to maximize our impact locally. I just question whether a campus location does that. But you are the 2nd person (with LZip) who has mentioned the old Pints. And if they support the Zips, lets go and support them. BW3 has always displayed a lot of Zips stuff also. These Exchange locations may actually be the best way to put on a display for student-aged fans.

I also like Blue and Gold's idea to hit downtown.

Now, I wonder just how many opportunities we have to do this. How many road TV games do we have? I've heard in the past that setting up the internet feeds into most bar's tv systems can be a chore. I've been told that's why the Valley location doesn't do it. Just glancing at the on-line schedule, this Friday's game against Toledo, since it's on ESPNU, might be the only obvious one that a bar would carry.

That was the main reason for the suggestion :D

But I do agree, that show the community at large about Zips fans we need to branch out from campus. I still think we can do both, but supporting establishments that display love for the Zips is a must.

Yes, I see that as another possible impact of these gatherings.

If these establishments see US, they might start to display more Zips items, and people in the community will see that, and it could really help our cause.

Honestly, right now, I can only think of Johnny J's in the Valley, and BW3 on Exchange as the only two places I go to in Akron that display a significant amount of Zips items in their establishment. That's really pathetic.

So who all is down for the game at The Score (FKA Pints) Friday? I'll be there if you guys want to try and put together something. Eddie's Cheesesteak is also located in the establishment. I am a fan

I would come but I am going to Toledo to attend the game and visit my money(my daughter attends UT).

We need to start doing this. I wanted to bring up this Friday's game, but thought maybe it was too short notice for some folks.

My question is....how many REAL tv road games do we have this year? I'm not seeing anything beyond this game on the schedule. Or, they haven't indicated tv coverage at this point.

Come on. Lets see some responses from some people. It would be great to start this thing and get some people together, but we'll have little impact if we have these gathering with just a few people. And only a few people have stated any interest in this.

Agreed. I was going to bring up Friday's game as well...but for reasons you just mentioned, it's a little short notice. Anyone have a pulse on games are possibly going to be aired on ESPNU and the like?

The NIU game is going to be on ESPN3. Other than that, everything is considered a wildcard by ESPN, which means they will pick a MAC game from a few options to air on ESPNU.

1. Alright then, we should plan in advance then to perhaps the "Big Games" that we'll have in the MAC. IMO that looks like a list:

@ Toledo (tmrw)

@ WMU (1/21)

@ Ohio (2/4)

@ Buffalo (2/24)

There's a chance that more games could be televised on SportsTime Ohio, I'm not sure what they're schedule looks like.

2. Also an option that hasn't been explored with this: They might not have to be televised for us to still get together. Many establishments have radios that they sometimes play in the background (Pints and Many's used too during quiet nights) maybe if we called the management to see if it would be possible to make that happen. That way we still have an option available for more games. I'm just spitballing this, someone let me know if I'm off my rocker :D

3. Perhaps visit a local establishment as ZipsNation before going to the home games. Women's or Men's. (some more spitballing).

Well, it looks like possibly ALL of our gathering might have to be scheduled on short notice, since we won't know the ESPN or Sportstime Ohio schedules until closer to the game times.

As I said previously, ESPN3, from what I have been told, is really difficult for a bar to do. When they did it at Johnny J's for the Soccer Selection Party one year, it took a lot of work to put that internet feed into their network of TVs. I don't know if a single TV in a smaller venue might be easier? No idea.

Balsy.....gathering before home games is a GREAT idea too. I think that would have the same effect at showing the community and the drinking/food establishments that we are out here.

A Chromecast dongle costs $35.

I guess we were all disgusted at the same time. I was so appalled, I created a new thread on it before I saw your comments.

Based on the outcry I am following on social media, I guess we just created a new example of "Something We Can Do".

Happy to see the Zips fans out there showing their loyalty.
