Dave in Green
Dr. Scarborough has a chart on his wall listing UA's primary strengths, with some in larger letters than others, as he considers the university's best path for the future. Dr Z
Dr. Scarborough has a chart...with some in larger letters than othersYou can make one too. I made a similar one, but I spelled it "Graphic Design."

skip-zip
Oh boy. Here we go. Big article on the front of the Beacon this morning. The name "Ohio Polytech Institute" is what people are talking about? The president is supposed to discuss this topic in an upcoming speech. But there is already overwhelming opposition in some surveys. And Change.Org apparently already has a petition started. This is starting to make me a bit ill. What purpose does this serve except to highlight those with Polymer or Technology degrees? How about the rest of us?I really hope the previous information is true. This better be more about branding than a serious consideration of an actual name change.
johnnyzip84
Right or wrong, I believe this school could be the inspiration.

ZippyRulz
Ohio State, Ohio U., Ohio Tech...I don't think the state legislature would approve it, especially since there have already been flaps over the "Ohio" brand.
ZachTheZip
There's already a Central Ohio Technical College. Is that what we're aspiring to be? Or maybe we want to be ITT?

ZachTheZip
This whole thing sounds like a resumé-stuffer move.
Dave in Green
Way too much focus on a possible name change when structural changes are the real game changers. But if it stimulates public conversation about what everyone thinks the former Buchtel College should put more or less emphasis on in the future, it's serving its purpose. zippy5
I don't care one way or the other really, but the backlash already makes me think it's a bad idea. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Buckzip
Why is there even a discussion of a name change? The entire premise is flawed.
scottditzen
The costs of changing the name, as well as promoting a new one will be ridiculous. The whole idea is ridiculous, and it's such a bad idea I'm wondering if it's actually a clever ploy to do something unprecedented; uniting the alumni base. If so, slow clap in your honor, Pres. Scarborough....you carpetbagging evil genius.
ZippyforPresident
In other news, ohio state u is considering changing its name to Frankin County Normal School in "the great moronic antiquated team ohio buckeyeland name change and jagoff contest."If the goal is to alienate an entire community and alumni base, well, mission accomplished!Perhaps Harvard will decide to change its name to Cambridge Technical Institute... SMH.As an alumnus, Akron isn't just where I went, it's a valued and meaningful part of who I am. Please do not destroy and devalue my alma mater to the point where it becomes the wal-mart of higher education. Gen Ed Core is already a silly enough plan. Thanks. K92
Extra points to ZfP for using "jagoff" in his rant. Irony points to Balsy for correcting someone else's spelling.
ZippyRulz
Name change or not, the focus is on "repositioning", whatever that entails.“It’s great to see such passion for our University. We are focusing on a repositioning now, not specifically on a name change,” Scarborough wrote.http://buchtelite.com/27123/news/upcoming-campus-protest-against-ua-name-change/

We'll probably see some of the liberal arts programs jettisoned and an even greater focus on STEM stuff. They already made a big change earlier this year by re-configuring Summit College into the College of Applied Science and Technology, which focuses on IT and Allied Health. Spin
Horrible idea. "Ploytechnic"???? What in the hell is that???As an alum (and in the last graduating class) of the College of Nursing before it was cheapened down with a bunch of other crap into the College of Health Professions, now they want to make the whole university "polytechnic"??? Screw him and the horse he rode in on. Does he know the employment rate of 6 month graduates from the College of Nursing (or whatever the hell it is now)? LOCAL employment? Or how competitive entry into the program is? Why would you want to cheapen the name further by asking prospective nursing students to "come to our Polytechnic." "Uhhh, hold on. I have North Central Tech on the other line and they're half the cost."It's ironic "Akron Institute has renamed itseld Herzig UNIVERSITY, while Akron U is going in the other direction. Think small,Be small
Spin
Yes there is an "Ohio Tech" already. Great place if you want to be a mechanic.http://www.ohiotech.edu/That's the one in the abandoned Randall Park Mall. "Ploytechnic" is synonymous with "Institute of Technology". I "graduated" from the National Institute of Technology back in the 80's and a few years later (making $16,000) I became an EMT after three months of part time training and made more. I got your "Institute" right here,
