Lee Adams
Since the dust has settled a bit lets take a look. Great that they beat a team they should have beaten. Thats a start. On the offensive side: 53 rushes for 228 according to the NCAA site. Hundley:17/119,Alexander:21/78 and Woodson went for another 70 or so. Passing:14/22. To state the obvious the coaches committed to the run and kept running it because they needed to and they could.. The result was that Woodson didn't have to 'win' the game through the air. He could make throws he is capable of making at this early stage of his career. He didn't have to panic and try to force the ball too often. Unless Woodson is injured at some point in the future Bowden needs to run him out there the rest of the season. And,the coaches need to at least for now commit to running the ball first. Use the two backs as they did against EMU. Get the O-line used to run blocking for 40 plays a game.Defensively, its hard to tell. It gave up 100+ to one back and had some trouble with a decent QB. But the D was able to control this game enough to allow the offense to continue to run the ball and not be forced to throw it 40 times.BGSU,a whole 'nother animal'. Performing at a much higher level than EMU,obviously. Offensively,Akron can not get into a shootout, again obviously. Running the ball will be even more important this week. Akron CAN move the ball on the BGSU defense IF the offense can stay out of scramble mode early. Slow the game down with the run even if it means trying to play field position at times. Run the ball 40 times if the game stays close. But,if Akron's pass defense gets porous and gives up big plays and has to play against that up tempo for long stretches, ouch. Obviously the defense will have to play its best game of the year.Amato likes to have people playing very aggressively. That might be problematic against BGSU. ZippyRulz
A successful passing game is the only way we would keep them honest and be able to run consistently. Taking that away in the name of ball control will only make us easy to defend against and we won't score the points needed to win. Our defense needs to slow them down as much as possible but they will score some points. Like it or not, it will be a shootout type of game, the only chance we have at beating them.
Dr Z
Lots of nice photos at Go Zips dot com.As I mentioned previously..."I couldn't help but notice EMU's DB Anthony Brown. What a great effort he showed with that club on his hand. I think he had five tackles with that thing, and broke on one of TW13's mistakes where he would have had a pick six if it weren't for that "cast." I'm not sure what his issue was, I'm assuming some sort of break"Photo from gozips.com
K92
I have a different take on the roles of offense and defense than a lot of you do. I agree with ZippyRulz. The defense's job is to get off the field with a stop. The offense's job is to score. An offensive game plan that concerns itself with how it impacts the defense makes absolutely no sense to me.The best way the offense can help the defense is by scoring. All offensive game plans should revolve around the best strategy to score, not time of possession. My 2 cents.
Jrship35
When the defense is 81st in the nation in "getting off the field" so far this year, I'm gonna step out and say that you may want to think about that ...... But maybe, just maybe, this is the game !! Offense is 87th in the nation in scoring ....... maybe, just maybe, this is the game (and I will give you that BGU's defense is 112th) ..... Did I mention that our red zone offense is a sizzling 115th in the nation (73%)Anyone ever heard of a ball controlled passing game ? Just curiousSound to me more like a game plan of hope .................. But hell I love a good shoot out !!! Let's stay outside the red zone and heave it up to Jerome about 10-12 times LOL Maybe, just Maybe he grabs 4-5 for TD'sJust messin with you guys, I believe we can agree to disagree ........ My wife tells me I'm wrong about 80% of the time anyway, so the odds are definitely in your favor !!! So I say ....... F&^% the stats ...... BEAT BOWLING GREEN EDIT: Shouldn't this be in the Bowling Green thread LOL
zipsoutsider
We are going to pass the ball almost as easily as we did against EMU, we would be fools not to do it. It will open up the run game for us and should deliver another balanced offensive attack. UMass was easily able to complete short and midrange passes. They have given up a ton of points this season. They are a fast tempo game. We can easily move the ball down the field by completing short to mid-range passes and running the ball that will give our defense the opportunity for the rest it needs. We cannot abandon the big play, however. It will keep the defense honest. 3rd down conversions (which vastly improved against EMU), winning the penalty and turnover games, as well as field position (implication = special teams) will all be key to us being in a position to win. K92
Jrship, I understand what you are saying about the numbers, but they are what they are. Playing keep away from BG's offense doesn't make it any less prolific. They aren't going to be confused and out of sync if they only run 70 plays instead of 100. They are still going to score when they have the ball. Now, if the staff has come to the conclusion that playing the slow down game against BG's defense gives the best chance for the Zips to score, then that's what you do. But if you play it that way to keep their offense off the field, I totally disagree. Playing the slow game, BG is still going to score 35. How many points will Akron score burning clock? This argument goes much deeper than the next game. This argument hinges on your college football philosophy. There have been coaches who have achieved great success hanging their hat on their defense and playing offense as to "not lose". In the past, when it was 3 yards and a cloud of dust teams lined up in tight formations and you saw who could kick who's ass. The teams that recruited the best players usually won. I think that was all turned on its ear with the evolution of the spread offense & tempo. Even teams that have defenses littered with NFL talent have a hard time defending the spread. I can't figure out why more coaches haven't seen the light like Gary Patterson did.Early in the season (and perhaps this has been tempered as the season has progressed) I believe our staff thought the Akron defense was good enough to win games by not losing the game on offense. It's not.But then again, in the whole of D-1A football whose is? That's a mighty short list. This is a topic that I have thought deserved its own thread in the past, but I just never started it.
Jrship35
ok ok. I concede, you guys are right ...... Coach Milwee, bring you guns to the shootout !!...... Michael Spinks thought he could take the fight to Tyson back in the day .... For like 17 seconds !!! Buster Douglas made him go 10 and was affective slipping, holding and counter punching ... Then got him. Lol..... Go Zips !!!!!!
skip-zip
I don't think we should stop what we are doing well to try to have a ball-control offense for one game, just because BG scores a lot of points. We still have to score as much as we can, whenever we can. But in order to beat BG, we have to make some stops. Plain and simple. I'm not convinced at all that we can win a high scoring shootout, when all I have to base it on is one previous conference game against a bad team with a really bad defense. Which was right on the heals of a game where we could not get into the end zone at all.
zipsoutsider
Statistically, FWIW, we will be the toughest defense BGU has played all year. I do believe we can contain their offense enough to win.

We've probably had as hard of a schedule as most in CFB to this point.
Lee Adams
In response to someone above,Akron ran the ball 53 times against EMU. Threw it 22. Thats more than 2:1 run. I am not sure what the definition of 'ball control' is in some quarters but maybe Akron did it by accident last week. The BG defense may not be as stout as OK,OU or Pitt, but those guys will be more than happy to run 80-90 plays, throw it 40 times and hang half a hundred on you to win. Its not plain and simple that the defense has to make some stops against BG. The Akron offense has to make the BG defense stay on the field AND give the defense field position to work with. If you have to punt a few times to flip the field do it. DO NOT put Woodson in a position where BG can unload the rack on him. He is not ready to take over a game at this point. Shoot,I would go so far as to put Grice on the field on offense out in the middle of the field. If he can get 3 yards on first down thats manageable. Make BG load up inside to stop him,run with Hundley or Alexander or pass off of him. They only have to do it a few times to get the defense to pay attention.Woodson has to be willing to throw the ball away or eat it if necessary. No turnovers. And the offensive coaches have to be patient and not get greedy with their play calling.
ZippyRulz
I'm sure BG would love for our offense to take its time, not score quickly, and try to run the clock with long, slow, many-play drives that give us plenty of chances to commit penalties, take sacks, and possibly turn the ball over. If they can intimidate us and take us out of our game mentally then we will know who is the better coach. But I don't think that's going to happen.Go Zips!
