Falcons' Offense Has Record-Setting Day

• Bowling Green set new school records for total yardage (725) and passing yardage (519) in Saturday's 62-38 win over UMass.

• The previous record of 706 yards was set vs. Grand Valley in 1978.

• BGSU football played 431 games in between 700-yard offensive performances. The last time BGSU went over 700 yards (1978), head coach Dino Babers was in high school.

Johnson Sets New Mark At The Doyt

• Matt Johnson passed for 450 yards on Saturday against UMass, setting a new record for most passing yards in a game at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.

• Johnson, who surpassed Ben Roethlisberger's previous record of 440 yards set in 2003, went 33-for-39 in the game with five touchdowns.

• Johnson's 84.6% completion rate was tied for fifth-best in school history for a single game. But, of those individuals in the top five, Johnson's 39 pass attempts on Saturday were 25 more than any other QB on that list.

Fans Witness History Saturday At The Doyt

• The 100 combined points on Saturday between BGSU and UMass, which saw the Falcons claim a 62-38 win, was the highest scoring game ever at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.

So they tore up a sorry, lame duck UMass program. Big whup.

Zips key is pressure on the QB. And not hanging their heads if BG gets a big play or two. Accept the fact that BG will get a couple big splash plays, and focus on the winning the war.

We held a good OU offense scoreless for 3 quarters, and suffocated ULL and EMU. If the Zips play solid D, they'll hold BG to 31. And I know the Zips can post 38 or more against a defense like BG's.

If Woodson is on...and he has been as of late...his passing opens up the run. And we'll have a nice day on the ground. Between him, Hundley and Alexander, 151 yards is a given.

Holding Johnson to less than 399 is tough. I think 400 was a good over/under number. But Coe will swat a few down, Marcus and Brown will be in the backfield plenty, and I think we can do it. There will be no stat-inflating garbage time in this game.

I pretty much agree with this. Their special teams defense is not strong. We might get a little help from that in the battle for field position. We can not be discouraged if we have to punt to win field position, it has to be part of the game plan. I agree that we can easily put up 38, maybe even more. We have really grown this year by battling every down. It is an area of marked improvement. I think we can run for 200 yards with the passing game opening up the run and I think our offense will surprise everyone who thinks this all hinges on our D.I think if we can get some stops early in the game, we can keep Johnson under 400 yards.

While I stated in another thread I think the Zips have a legitimate chance (and I think the Captain's reasoning is sound), I have a bad feeling about this one. I think BG will throw it on just about every play and even with the Zips putting some pressure on Johnson he'll complete enough against our defensive backfield to make the difference. Getting sacked on one play doesn't mean a lot if you complete a 20 yard pass on the next play. Pass rush is solid but still a little worried about pass coverage (I still shudder at the OU play where Vick looked like he was about to be sacked in the end zone on third down and flung it downfield for about a 30 yard gain to one receiver with about 6 Zips around him). Even though whether the Zips win or not wasn't a question, I see BGSU 38 Zips 24. Fortunately I am wrong a lot. :)

I agree that the 399/400 yard demarcation is about perfect for a poll like this. I went under, but it’s probably wishful thinking. Cap’n is correct about the need to put pressure on Johnson to prevent an over– but I was somewhat disappointed in this part of the defense last week against EMU. Maybe the Eagles have a decent O-Line, but I would think BG’s is at least as good.

I like the way the team is progressing in all phases (Jordan George on kick coverage deserves a shout out), but I don’t think the Zips are quite there with the Falcons at this point, unless (as I pointed out earlier) they win the TO battle by 2 or more. I think that’s asking a lot, so I predict the following:

Falcons 40

Zips 31

Nick's Picks Has the Zips winning. Historically, he's pretty accurate. Better than most.

He calls an eleven point underdog a "slight" upset? I would quantify that as a "big" upset.

Nick makes a good point here...

Why isn't BG QB Matt Johnson receiving any sort of Heisman press? I know the MAC doesn't have much of a national following and many in the MAC News Media are pathetic at best with their local coverage...but this guy is putting up video game numberss right now and someone should be taking notice.

....and wondered the same myself. BG should be doing more for him. The Zips sure did Charlie a solid on this front. Doesn't really matter if you win or not, but it gets you noticed on a national level that helps get your foot into the NFL process.

Johnson's been sacked 19 times already this season.

That would make sense since he has more attempts than anybody in the country. I hope the Zips front four can make an uncomfortable pocket for him tomorrow. BG's uptempo offense gets the ball out of his hands quickly more often than not though. Hope they wear themselves out, and our rotation prevails. 50 and cloudy with no rain tomorrow. Does it only rain at Infocision on Saturdays?

Congratulations to Johnnyzip84!!!

He was the only one to answer all three questions correctly.

On top of that, he has won two weeks in a row answering 6 straight. Very impressive.

Even though the Zips have a bye week, look for MAC related questions on this weeks edition of Three for Thursday.
