College Cup field set as Sporting KC's Sporting Park welcomes NCAA men's soccer championship matches

... US national team striker and Seattle Sounders academy product Jordan Morris (pictured) is one of 10 Stanford players with MLS academy ties, while Akron – former home of Portland Timbers coach Caleb Porter and several of his club's standouts – boast seven such players, including New York Red Bulls academy midfielder Adam Najem, whose overtime free kick sent Akron to the semifinals. ...

Four-team field set for NCAA Division I Men's College Cup at Sporting Park

...How they got to KC: Akron beat Creighton 3-2 in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday to clinch their fourth College Cup appearance and third since 2009. After a scoreless first half, the Zips twice took the lead only for Creighton to produce quick equalizers. Adam Najem netted the game-winner in the 102nd minute as the Blue Jays suffered elimination in the quarterfinals for the second straight year....

Just wondered if anyone has seen any College Cup merchandise available on the web? I've been looking, and found some for last week's women's tournament, but not this week's. I see that the UA Bookstore is selling Potato Bowl shirts, but nothing for the College Cup.

EXACTLY six years ago to this day was this:

Hopefully it's the same result, but in a different way. I don't think I can handle pk's this year. Edited by mes102

Rowdies are in great form during Clemson/Syracuse PKs. "CONcentrate, CONcentrate, CONcentrate!" "WE want Clemson! WE want Clemson!" Great to see so many of them there.

I enjoyed the five guys at the final chant/serenading Taylor Twellman. The cameras did a good job of exposing the nearly 20,000 empty seats, and Taylor held the NCAA up to rightful contempt for the awful turnout. Even compared it to the women's tourney in Carey, which was nearly sold-out.

@ZIP, you've got to be kidding. Comparing Penn State v Duke turnout in Duke's back yard and 480 miles from Penn State to Stanford v Clemson, 900+ miles from the closer school and 1850+ from the other. MORONS. I give the NCAA credit for trying to showcase Mens Soccer in various places in the country.

Given the rain we experienced at the Championship Game in Cary in 2009 and the Championship game this year in KC, perhaps they should try for Portland or Seattle where the general populous appreciates the game. Plus, who doesn't like visiting all of the great local breweries in Portland not to mention the scenery of the Pacific NW.

I like visiting breweries anywhere/everywhere.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this -- I just saw your response, 87: In fact, I am NOT kidding one iotum! Are you telling me that the NCAA, and Sporting Kansas City (College Cup hosts?) conducting the final four in a Greater Kansas City Metroplex, with what must by demographic ratio be over a hundred thousand footballers, is dependent upon footie fans of the visiting teams to create an attendance that surpasses what the University of Akron gets for a regular season MAC home game? If Cary was ONLY able to sell tickets because of the presence of Duke University among the four teams, then it is symbolic and indicative of the NCAA's inability -- and essential refusal to MARKET the event to the local market and populace of NC and Kansas/Missouri and nearby regions. What was Sporting KC's average attendance this season? I'd be willing to bet it was well over 1000% of the attendance at the College Cup in their stadium, so you cannot make the argument that there are no football fans in that part of the country. I know from experience that the NCAA made no effort to market the 2010 College Cup in Santa Barbara, and with all the teams from far-out-of-state, there were still IIIRC about 6-7000 people on site. And that was because of the popularity of the sport in the nearby region, NOT because of marketing!

The NCAA lack of marketing may be true, but I'm not sure you can depend on professional soccer fans to fill the stands for the college game as it currently is. The NCAA needs to make a few rules changes to bring the game more in line with the pro sport. Count up on the clock and limit substitutions to maybe 6 and no reentry. Still think the appeal in Cary is not only Duke being in the honor area but UNC Elon NC State High Point et al close by.

I still think that if the College Cup can be played in Cary, Philadelphia, Kansas City, etc then the PNW is a viable option.

#3 out of >200 is more than "good" my friend. (Glass half full here)

Note that Barth stated everyone's aspirations..."national championship next year!"
